General Store $12.95
The cheese was for the HH.
Plain green beans and chicken with thyme and black pepper.
Chicken with thyme and black pepper plus butternut squash.
Big salad with leftover chicken and butternut squash. {Plus oil, vinegar and strawberry jam for the dressing}
Big salad with chicken. I am so sick of chicken.
Natural Foods Store $12.32 {not pictured is a jar of unsalted peanut butter}.
Note to self: Rice cakes will ALWAYS taste like Styrofoam. And brown rice crackers? Gag. I am on the hunt for unsalted Matzo, I think those might be better. Anyone know where I can find them?
Big Box Store $15.90
Asparagus was on sale for $1.49 a pound!
Ms. Dash $5.88
Someone left a comment on the low iodine diet bit I wrote last week with a link to a website and on that website they mentioned they sprinkled Ms. Dash on everything. AND OH MY WORD eating is a little more enjoyable now.
It even taste good in guacamole!
Fact: If you are going to eat brown rice and crackers with unsalted peanut butter, you are going to need a gallon of water nearby. Talk about a major chocking hazard.
Oatmeal with brown sugar and blueberry jam. Looks like it would be pretty good doesn’t it? Try eating it everyday for 2 1/2 weeks and then get back to me on that.
Chicken and asparagus.
Chicken and asparagus.
This week. It’s going to be a real fun one.
Current mood: Grouchy. 🙁
May your day be filled with sugar and salt. {And cheese. And salami. And milk in your tea. And a big fat slice of chocolate cake.}

Take part of your oatmeal and blend it up to break up some of the oats and then prepare oats as normal. It makes your oatmeal creamier and all you need is a bit of brown sugar and milk if you can have that or leave the milk out. I don’t even put jam in it.

Hi Mavis:
Check that your chicken was not injected with a broth solution (for added flavor/tenderness). The solution could possibly would have sodium/iodine in it, especially if it was frozen chicken.
Janice S Gallaugher says
I was just going to say the very same thing… I was shocked when I read the ingredients for frozen chicken… 🙁
Teri says
You can do it Ms. Mavis! Rooting for you!
Christie says
I don’t blame you. I would be grouchy too. Hang in there! 🙂 You’ve got this!!

I had severe food allergies for 27 years with no end in sight. For the last few years of it I had 14 safe foods. I am thankful every day for the alternative practitioner who gave me my foods back. If I could do it for all those years you can too! Being grouchy just makes it worse so suck it up! Not being mean just being truthful.. BTW matzos are tasteless and dry too.
KC says
Matzo is pretty bland. The texture isn’t styrofoam or rice cracker, though, which might be an improvement.
(check in the kosher section if the store has one, and the international foods section if they don’t, and with the crackers otherwise – but you may have missed the annual Peak Matzo Buying Window by a week or so, since Passover is over now.)
Terri says
I have to watch my salt and know all about Mrs. Dash. I couldn’t live without those little bottles of tasty bits!
Did a little surfing and hit on this. I notice it allows other meat (?)

This stinks so much! I remember when rice crackers were all the diet rage…puffy cardboard isn’t it! My daughter’s husband is Jewish and they just finished the week of Passover dining. First night is always amazing, but the last 2 days were sad. Her husband kept wanting to make matzo the “center” of the meal…why? Because “we are a suffering people”. hahaha. Such a goober. Everything will be delightful in your pie hole soon and I know that day can’t come soon enough. Can you imagine if HH had to give up all HIS foods–cereal, crackers, processed deliciousness. I know you have your eye on the prize at the end. Looking forward to getting the strawberry garland 🙂

I’ve been making oats in an instant pot with chopped apples and cinnamon tastes almost like apple pie
Kania says
We make apple pie oatmeal too but on our stove and use apple pie spice. SO yummy!

When pregnant I had to go six months with no salt! Mrs Dash to the rescue. Even a plain baked potato tastes good with Mrs Dash on it. Then a huge binge on potato chips once the baby was born. 🙂
Years later, when I had to go three months with no dairy, I was sent to a Jewish delicatessen to buy bread products. Ask for their parve list and you’ll find those things that have neither dairy nor meat in them. I think kosher salt has no iodine but I’d check on that.

A quick check revealed Amazon carries the unsalted Matzo crackers but I’m not sure if they are a bargain or not.
Mavis Butterfield says
We found them today and grabbed 2 boxes!!! And they taste a WHOLE lot better than those brown rice crackers or Styrofoam. 🙂
Dianne says
Hi Mavis,
Kudos to you for sticking to the regime! Time will go fast. Can you tell me how you make your dressing out of Fruit Jam. Some look like they would be good!
Thank you,
Dianne

If you can find the matzoh, Google “matzoh brie” and”charoses” recipes.
Matzoh Brie is when you wet the matzoh, then break it up and mix with beaten eggs and fried in a pan. Serve with jelly or syrup or honey. Charoses is chopped apples, walnuts or pecans, a little sweet wine or grape juice and cinnamon sugar. We put that on matzoh during Passover holiday, but it’s good any time!
Rory says
oatmeal with peanut butter and honey is good!
what bout salmon or other fish? can you eat unsalted butter? maybe brown the butter and put over fish?
can’t you have ground beef?
Linda says
When I had to go on “the diet” the doctor had a nutritionist who worked with patients and she was very helpful. Quite a few comments on your previous post mentioned that canning salt has no iodine. I used Mrs. Dash for flavoring, and since I make my own bread was able to use canning salt and was allowed two slices a day. I was also told that organic milk was okay because certified farms don’t use iodine to clean the udders, which is why milk is on the not-allowed list. By not using processed foods and making meals from scratch I didn’t feel too deprived. Is there somebody with your doctor’s office that you can talk with about this?
Lynn says
I use honey and cinnamon in my oatmeal.

I make oatmeal, add brown sugar and peanut butter. You might try it for variety. Food is an accent mark in our days… I hope this time passes quickly.

I had oatmeal with PB today, too, and with applesauce. I admire your discipline, Mavis! You’re doing a good thing for yourself–hang in there.
Joely says
Hi Mavis, I am sorry for your very restricted diet. There is a great all purpose salt free seasoning that I use regularly. You can get it on amazon. I’ve included the link. Good luck and may this time pass quickly for you!
