It was a great week in the food department!
Monday started off with homemade tortillas stuffed with leftover steak tips and all the fixings.
Then, the next day we had a simple bean soup with the rest of the steak tips.
Necessary rations from the general store. $11.27
{Costco canned} chicken salad with chopped apples and sweet pickles. YUM.
Dinner for the HH.
Lunch for the 3 hour tour.
Fact: Neither Monkey Boy nor The Girl knew what the phrase “3 hour tour” meant. And that made me feel old.
A solid breakfast, don’t you think?
Free eggs from our mail lady. 🙂 It made me want to get chickens again. Until I remembered the part about having to go out into the frozen tundra twice a day during the winter {6} months and having to take care of them.
Fresh salsa with beans and rice.
Meatballs! I didn’t use a recipe, just threw everything in the mixer and went for it. And they were fantastic! Every time I make meatballs I think of that part in the movie The Wedding Singer when the little old lady pays Adam Sandler’s character in meatballs. 🙂
Ice cream season has arrived here in Maine.
I ordered a small chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone and this is what the girl behind the window handed me. Next time I think I’ll order the kiddie cone and see what I get handed.
A small ice cream, a medium hot fudge sundae and a real Maine blueberry pie from The Village Ice Cream and Port Clyde Bakery for about $30. This is a waaaaay better way to spend $30 than buying a lobster roll if you ask me.
How about YOU? How was YOUR food week? Did you eat anything exciting? Eat any ice cream or pie?
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

I immediately started singing the song when I read “3 hour tour.” I’m only 31, but I grew up watching TV Land!

I love Gilligan’s Island, we have on reruns 3 hours each week.
Lana says
Ice cream cones have gotten that big here, too. I am ordering kiddie cones from now on as well.

I know about the 3 hour tour–but I am old. 🙂
I often order kid-sized food. It’s the size they used to serve adults in the 1950s. A few years ago went to a cafe in a small town where they served the old portion sizes and we almost felt cheated. 🙂
In a restaurant I often ask for a take out container at the beginning of my meal and put half the food in it to take home for another meal.

Once a Gilligan’s Island rerun came on TV and my kids, then teenagers, were flabbergasted that I could sing the whole song.

Hi Mavis!
This question gets a bit personal: How do you like living in Maine so far? You see, my husband and I are planning on retiring soon and we would like to relocate somewhere outside the major real estate tax zones and far away from HOAs. So far, Maine is making our list. We plan on visiting the state this year to explore the possibilities.

LOVE IT!

I know pop culture icons change over the generations. But — what tune does the younger generation use for their references to “earworms”? There must be something!
Cherri says
Oh my gosh! I have been around the horn quite a few more times then you Mavis, but I have never heard the phrase “3 Hour Tour”. I had to look it up. It just never connected with me I guess. Learn something new every day. Thank you.
Michèle says
I’m 77 and am bereft of what “the three hour tour” is. Help me Mavis!
Susie says
Michele, it’s from the “Gilligan’s Island” theme song! “Five passengers that sailed that day for a 3-hour tour…a 3-hour tour…”
MEM says
Thanks for the memories! I’m 61 and grew up on shows like this.
Sara says
No vanilla ice cream for the pie?
Tami Lewis says
Yep, I’m old too and know the 3 hour tour. But it is fun to play stump the kids!
That ice cream cone!!!
My food highlight of the week..no pics but my kids took me to a belated Mother’s Day meal at our favorite Indian restaurant. Butter chicken is the bomb!!!

Mavis, we all know that you and your hubs cook amazing and wonderful food all the time. But I have to say that your tortillas look dry as heck I saw the recipe…..no no no. No good tortilla will have milk or vegetable oil in it. EVER! It will have lard in it or shortening Please please please try my recipe and you will see and taste the difference.
3/4pound ( 2 3/4 cups) all-purpose flour, plus a little extra for rolling the tortillas
5tablespoons lard or vegetable shortening, or a mixture of the two
3/4teaspoon salt
About 3/4cup very warm tap water
make the dough and let it rest for a few minutes…heat an ungreased griddle or heavy skillet over medium to medium-high heat.On a lightly floured surface, roll out a portion of the dough into an even 7-inch circle: Flatten a ball of dough, flour it, then roll forward and back across it; rotate a sixth of a turn and roll forward and back again; continue rotating and rolling until you reach a 7-inch circle, lightly flouring the tortilla and work surface from time to time. You do not need to oil the pan or spray it. Lay the tortilla on the hot griddle (you should hear a faint sizzle and see an almost immediate bubbling across the surface).
