Last week started off business as usual. Big salads, beans and rice, cheese and crackers. You know, the usual stuff we eat around here. And then about mid-week, the HH started “researching” the Blackstone Griddle.
And then once he bought it, we starting thinking of all the delicious things he could cook on it.
$8.00 2 Dozen Eggs From The Egg Lady
Scrambled eggs was #1 on my list. Because seriously, there is a HUGE difference in the way eggs taste on the stove vs a griddle. And so the next morning at 7 am I stopped off at the Egg Lady’s place and grabbed a couple of dozen eggs.
$10 for 2 slices of cheesecake, $4 for granola and $3 for 6 chocolate chip cookies from the farmstand
And since I was already out and about, I had to stop off at the farmstand with all the baked goods too. I was hoping she had cookies and granola, but when I got there there she had cheesecake in the fridge as well so I grabbed a couple of slices of that too.
And just for the record, strawberry cheesecake goes very nicely with tea for breakfast.
$20.18 for rations from the General Store
Ice cream sandwiches are a MUST this time of year… don’t you agree?
$25.95 for groceries from Scamaford
And since I can’t stand Hannaford, the HH went there to buy ground beef. {We actually have a bunch in the freezer, but he didn’t want to wait for it to thaw. Whatever.} And avocado oil for the griddle {I have no idea why… something about the smoking point. I wasn’t really listening when he told me}.
$39.94 for groceries from Walmart
He got everything on my list. And even found Malt O Meal! And surprised me with Biscoff cookies. π
$16.24 from Walmart – I guess I wanted to stock up for winter?
Anyway… Since the HH bought his griddle we are now eating like truckers.
Who needs to go to Cracker Barrel when you can get Big Momma’s Breakfast cooked up right on your very own back porch? This breakfast combo even comes with warm pure maple syrup. So seriously, why leave the house? Why get dressed? Pancakes cooked in bacon grease in your jammies out back? What’s not to love?
Hamburgers!
THREE DAYS in a row!
I kid you not.
I hear tonight it’s fried rice night here at Camp Butterfield. And you know what? I couldn’t be more excited because I think I just got out of cooking for the entire summer!!!
Seriously, I have no idea how that happened… but hey, who am I to complain? Between fresh vegetables from the garden, baked goods from the little farmstand, cool treats from the local ice cream shop and grill griddle boy, I think I’m all set for meals this summer. Life is good!
So what are YOU eating these days? And WHERE are you eating? Outside? Inside? curious minds want to know.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

Your temps look divine. I am in the mid-atlantic and it was 90+ degrees all weekend and close to it much of this week. I made a HUGE salad for the family on Saturday that we ate all weekend…for dinner. Sadly, my garden has not caught up to the temperatures, so thank goodness for a local orchard and farmers markets!

HH is spot on about the avocado oil, I use it when I roast chopped tomatoes, onion and garlic in the oven on high heat, doesnβt smoke.
Hamburgers look so good.

We’ve had a Blackstone for about six months now, and we LOVE it. Breakfast is so fun, and steaks done on it are AMAZING. enjoy!!
Sara says
My husband wants Blackstone but I’m not so sure about it. How often will it really be used….
Lana says
Once the fun of it being new wore off we rarely use ours. And it is too high maintenance unless you use it a lot. If you ignore for a few weeks then it gets rusty and gross and who wants to reseason every darn time you want to use it?
Florence says
Sounds like an excellent plan for summer cooking!!

Hi Mavis, I started following your blog a number of years ago when you were couponing and spending less on groceries. I know you’re in a different season of life now with your kids being older and out of the house. But, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on increases in consumer commodities? I’m not sure where you live in Maine, if prices are higher due to less stores or being further from larger stores with lower prices. But, I definitely see an uptick in spending on items I often think of as cheap like dried beans and split peas. Anywho, hope you’re having a great week!
Mavis Butterfield says
Great question. For starters, I think prices are up on everything, not just groceries. Food does cost more here as there is no places like Winco to stock up on bulk items like beans, produce and other odd ball items. I remember paying $0.62 a pound for split peas and other beans at Winco. Here it’s more like $1 a pound {even at big box stores}.
Because we are no longer really making big meals or feeding a crowd {it just the two of us now, and we don’t eat as much as we used to} what we buy has changed too. Never in a million years would I have spent $40 on random cheeses 5-7 years ago. But now, it’s fun to try not only local cheese, but other treats as well.

My husband could buy any griddle or grill or anything he wanted if he would do the cooking! I am so jealous of the big bags of dried pinto beans. I have every other kind of being I need, but for some reason I haven’t been able to find pintos around here. At least I know now that there isn’t some kind of national shortage.

You are living the good life for sure! Nothing like eating breakfast outside and with that view – WOW!

My husband got a griddle last summer and we take it with us when we’re camping in our 5th wheel. He now cooks breakfast and for supper we’ve had steaks, burgers, dogs and sausages, fish and shrimp. Also, vegetables that may be hard to cook on a grill can be cooked on the griddle, asparagus, sliced red onions and smash potatoes (look it up if you’re not familiar, they’re great!) When we camp were usually out for 2 weeks at a time every month for 5 months of the year, so that’s a lot of cooking. Several times during the summer we invite family and friends to eat with us. You can cook for a lot of people with this griddle or just the 2 of us. My husband enjoys cooking on it and I enjoy eating it!

Off topic here Mavis, but just wondering how you’re feeling since your surgery? Have you and your doctor settled on the right dosage yet? I know it takes some time but I’m thinking that you must be feeling pretty darned good these days with all the goals you keep crossing off your list and that’s great! Also, I love your choices of cheesecake, cookies, and ice cream sandwiches because seriously, does it get any better than that?
Mavis Butterfield says
I feel great and haven’t had any issues. π
Marcia says
We are eating the usual…we get veggies from two CSA boxes, and pasta, rice, chicken. Kids are off school for summer, and my teenager has a hollow leg. So…we fill it.
Last couple of weeks: lots of kale. But the tomatoes, corn, and stone fruit have been showing up too.
Jamie says
So my husband never cooks but he loves grilling on our blackstone!! And it is SO good for all things breakfast foods!
