Free beef!!
As my friend JJ and her family were bringing all their suitcases in to stay a few nights, they handed us a sack and mentioned it was some grass fed beef. From their backyard. There was so much going on at the time, I had the HH stick it in the freezer and just last night got around to opening the bag.
Inside was 4 pounds of ground beef, 4 patties, 2 filet mignons and a sirloin steak. Holy cow man!
Last week was an excellent on in the food department. There were pancakes, eggs and bacon.
A full on lobster dinner. {6 lobsters fresh off the dock + a little science lesson for $70. What a deal.}
With lobsters of course, corn, salt potatoes and rolls.
There was also the usual stuff… like beans and rice.
Pie and bread. $6.00 for the bread and ? for the pie. {I’ll have to find out next week when I go and get another one and add it to my total.}
And the HH fired up the Blackstone Griddle again. This time it was hamburgers. He’s trying to perfect them and so far he has the burger size and bun type {brioche} nailed down but is still working on the right lettuce {my vote is for iceberg}.
Butter lettuce is a little too chewy for a cheeseburger in my opinion.
Weenies, eggs, zucchini and toast… on the griddle {of course}.
Farm Stand $29.36
The local strawberries are finally ripe… and going for $6.99 a quart. {And worth every penny}
And last but not least, the HH’s Scammaford Shopping Trip $14.80 {I think he got lucky this time.}
Curious minds want to know… how much are real, fresh off the farm {not grocery store} strawberries going for in your neck of the woods? Has anyone done U-Pick this year? If so, what’s the going rate for strawberries?
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

I’ve always done U-Pick here in SE Wisconsin. In 2020, I used the money that I would have spent at u-pick and purchased strawberry plants and planted them in my small urban backyard. In one year, I’ve harvested enough strawberries to eat them fresh, make a pie and put up 8 pounds in my freezer for jam once the weather cools down.
Rhonda says
U-pick strawberries in Willamette Valley in Oregon are $1.95 a pound for 0-10 pounds, $1.85 for 10-40 pounds and $1.75 a pound for 40+ pounds. U-pick cherries start tomorrow at $1 a pound!!!!!

Koch Family Farms in St. Paul for strawberries, raspberries and marionberries. Hildebrandt Cherry Orchards in Dayton. TK Orchards in Aurora for peaches.

In middle TN our strawberries were $15 a gal. so way less than you are paying. With Covid there are no U-pick farms this year or last. Too old to do that stoop labor anyway! LOL
Mallory Lemieux says
Fellow Mainer here – Strawberries are $3.15 per pound at Pineland Farms this year (u-pick), with a 15% bulk discount, they also offer a senior discount on select days. We picked close to 40 pounds last year – almost all of it was made into strawberry rhubarb jam! I’d expect prices to be similar in your area for u-pick!
Susan says
I bought a flat – 12 pints- of fresh from Nanneman Farms strawberries
at Chucks Produce for $24.99

I see from these posts, one thing that’s cheaper in the Northwest is strawberries! I grow my own, so I didn’t know. I don’t even know where to find fresh farm strawberries here in my Eastern Washington home. I know u-pick is all over the west side, though.
Tracy says
Donna, I’m in eastern wa too and I think there are some farms in the mead area that have u-pick strawberries and other fruits/veggies too. Google u-pick farms in eastern WA. The west side farms show up too but keep scrolling. Hope you find what you are looking for.

I quit going to the u-pick farms a couple years ago. I was picking strawberries one day when I saw three families that brought their kids. The boys were running around “watering” the strawberries with their parents encouragement since they didn’t want to take them out to the bathroom. They thought it was fun, so there were 6 boys running around peeing all all over everything. I started gagging and left so I didn’t throw up. So disappointed as I live five minutes from so many amazing u-pick farms in Snohomish.
Brenda says
Southwest Michigan: $30/flat (8 qts). Drive through the barn, hand the money out the window and they put the berries in your car or back through your window. Fresh picked that morning!
Kim says
Hi Brenda, longtime follower of Mavis, though I never comment:(
I live in Portage, Michigan, so that means we are practically neighbors!
Would you mind telling me the name of the farm you used? Driving up, paying, them putting fresh-picked fruit in the back on my car and driving off is totally the way to go in my book:)
Cheryl says
Finger Lakes area, Chase Farms, $28.00 an overflowing flat at the stand…not sure of the you pick price. I am going back for another flat (freezer jam!) tomorrow and will check the you pick price. They are also worth every penny and sweet as sugar!

Bucks County, PA (just north of Philadelphia)- from a local farm stand (just a cute little hut at the end of the farm’s drive where she still uses a cash box and the honor system) I paid $9 for a quart of strawberries. The pick-your-own farm that I use has theirs priced at $2.25 per pound. Definitely gone way up in the last couple years but it’s worth it for the best tasting fresh strawberries and to support the local farmers.
Michele Cheney says
U pick at Lavignes’s strawberry farm in Lyman, ME (next to Kennebunk) $3 per pound

The farm we went to south of Atlanta…quite a bit south of the city..about 60 miles or so. We bought 4 large buckets each containing about 6 lbs of berries. I paid $70 total which makes them about $2.91/lb. I made 27 pints of jam which should carry us through the year. I love canning season!!

Just came back from my mom’s place in Sparta, MI — and bought a quart of strawberries at the u-pick place for $4.75. However, I was limited to just one quart purchase — the lady said it was too blamed hot “for the kids,” so supplies were limited.
The berries were juicy, but not as sweet as previous years. And yes, it was HOT. And humid.
Diana says
Create a small space in your garden and grow them! Ugh! $6/quart! NO WAY!
I go out into my yard and pick them.
It’s the only way to go!
