Hello Monday!
According to the weather service we are now supposed to be getting 5-8 inches of snow tomorrow. I am SO excited about this! The snow should start falling around late tonight so I’m looking forward to waking up to another blanket of white outside.
I think I’ll get the woodstove ready to go today so I can have my cup of tea and write my blog post tomorrow in front of the fire.
Another week, another batch of my favorite copy cat Panera tomato soup. I can’t get enough of this soup!!
The HH fired up the smoker. And well, I think he got a little carried away because we had beef for 4 dinners straight last week!
Beef tips and asparagus, beef tips and beans…
Beef tips in stew…
Beef tips in nachos. 😉
Rising Tide Co-Op $59.45
I called the co-op back in early December and requested Seville oranges {bitter oranges for making marmalade} and well, they finally came in so we zipped on over and picked them up along with a few other goodies.
Note: the fancy oranges were $4.69 a pound and I bought enough for 2 batches of marmalade {I’ll share the recipe tomorrow} so that’s why the total is so high. Those oranges, they’re a bit of a rare commodity. And of course we had to buy tea and blue cheese as well. 😉
Fact: There is ZERO satisfaction in buying parsley. ZERO.
Pickety bits night #1.
Pickety bits night #2. 😉
So how did YOU do last week? Did you eat anything exciting? Curious minds want to know.
Have a great day everyone,
~Mavis

The storm you’re getting tomorrow gave us 6 inches yesterday. Enjoy! 😉
I love parsley but prefer to grow my own as around here it’s always sold in large bunches and I just need a small amount. So, grow my own, or use organic dried. 🙂

I actually don’t mind buying parsley. I always grow it, but it gets taken over by Swallowtail butterflies, so we never get to use it. So, I don’t mind buying it if it means the butterflies enjoy the parsley I grow. I know some people consider Swallowtails pests for that reason, but we’re fans of pretty much any pollinator.
I think the best thing I made this week was cheese grits to go with steak and a Parmesan peppercorn dressing for a salad. I also made two different kinds of oat bars for snacks (applesauce cinnamon and peanut butter honey).

We got 8 inches of the white stuff so far here in Central PA and it’s heading your way. Enjoy! 🙂

We are having a very mild winter in Montana. I’ve only had my snowplow out 2X and we just get a little skiff here and there of snow. We got the kids snowshoes for Christmas because I usually trek over our property and they walk behind me and we talk. Well, they are just sitting there with the tags on them as I haven’t been able to use mine even this year. One of these weekends we just might have to go higher up in the mountains for some snow. We live at 5400’, so it is odd. We have had so many people move here from other states in the last year, so they are probably glad we have a mild winter. Unfortunately, this is not our norm. 3 years ago was opposite story. Sub zero many days and 18+” for weeks. We had so much snow people were having to push it off their roofs. It is funny how some years are so different.

i love montana, but i figured the winters would be brutal!

Wow!! What a fun treat! I’m so excited to grow these veggies this year because they are from YOU!! Thank you!!!!! You introduced me to the wonderful world of Botanical Interest and I just LOVE it! This year will be extra special!
Enjoy the snow and your beautiful view! You inspired me to hold on to my dreams and now we’re moving to a place with a lake view too! Thank you for reminding us through your life to live intentionally.
Your food pics are so gorgeous and the food sounds yummy! We’ve made several of your recipes! A few we’ve loved are: the almond biscotti, carols creamy grape salad, and the copycat tomato bisque! Delish.
Thank you again! Happy Monday wishes to you! Hope you stay warm by the wood stove!

I tried a recipe for oven pulled pork that was delicious and we have so much leftover that I think I will freeze some for a future meal of homemade enchiladas. I also tried a baked bean recipe from scratch that had good flavor but the navy beans were still quite firm after hours in the oven so I need to play with that recipe. I think this week’s menu calls for salads, pickety bits, and soup…keeping it easy.
Seeing the pickled beets on your salad reminds me that I made some refrigerator pickled beets a couple of weeks ago so they should be deliciously ready by now…

My husband likes making the pulled pork in the oven too. Glad you had leftovers. 🙂

So jealous of your snow day coming up!! We rarely ever get snow (south Texas) and if we do it’s a partial inch and gone lickety split. Stay warm and enjoy the winter wonderland!

Tried your cheeseburger soup this weekend with company over. So good!!

Cincinnati got 3 inches which is like 2 feet out your way. It’s just ridiculous how everyone races to the market for bread and TP.
I’d love all the meat, but we are definitely **rare** meat eaters here. But I do applaud the man for cooking in the winter. Rain, sleet or feet of snow (in Pittsburgh and Chicago) my family grilled year round. 🙂

The snow is still coming down here in Eastern PA – well, mostly sleet right now but supposedly it will turn back to snow soon, wish it stayed snow the whole time 🙁 Potato soup on the menu tonight, but now I want to dig in the freezer for a steak because those steak tips look delicious. Congrats to the giveaway winners!

Your (deliberate) Seville orange purchase reminds me of when an American friend living in Oxford one year was so upset, because there had been these oranges which were really cheap at the market, and everyone else at the market was excited about them because these particular oranges are only available for a short time each year and they were even fancy named oranges, not just some random oranges, and then she got them home and it was “such a cheat” or something like that because they tasted terrible… Ah, marmalade oranges vs. eating oranges.
I hope you enjoy your marmalade-making! Are you going to go full-bore traditional and try to make it set with just the sugar and the cheesecloth bag of orange seeds and stuff, or are you going to add pectin to make it more likely to succeed? (or! one batch of each, maybe, I guess? 🙂 )

I made a Tamale Pie that was pretty darn good. I love tamales so it was nice to have a dish that tastes like tamales but was quick and easy to make.

I laughed when I read, “Fact: There is ZERO satisfaction in buying parsley. ZERO.” but only because…
We take care of our neighbor’s guinea pigs when they take weekend trips – and they LOVE parsley. We always buy a fresh batch just to watch them enjoy it.
So maybe you need a guinea pig? 🙂

We tried your cheeseburger soup and it was a hit. It made a lot so I froze some for lunches.

We had the craziest snow storm last Tuesday. We live in Mendocino county in northern California where a sudden storm blew in and dropped a huge amount of snow in our area which hardly ever sees snow in about 2 hours. We stood outside listening to trees snapping all over the valley, they sounded like shotguns going off. There were a couple thousand of us out of power for between 2 1/2 and 6 days! Crazy weather, between that and our perpetual wildfires in the summer/fall it is a crazy place to live!

What a wonderful surprise! The seeds and garden markers will be wonderful additions to our garden this year. I made a pasta fagioli soup to keep us warm this week… lots of herbs in there too. The frozen basil from last summer’s garden, rosemary and oregano, which is still holding on in spite of winter weather. Thanks again for the giveaway treats!
Gigi says
That storm left use with 11.5” or heavy wet snow. We choose not to have a snow blower. It took two of u 2 hours to clear the driveway. And then another 45 minutes to build snow forts and have a snowball fight with the kids. Enjoy your snow.

Your parsley comment made me wonder if you have ever thought about buying an aerogarden for the winter months. I’ve thought about it for a few years now and finally got one. Then I loved it so much I got a second. One for herbs and one for lettuce. It’s so much fun to grow fresh greens in the dead of winter.

Oh Seville Oranges – I have 6 in my fridge, as I didn’t know how many I would need. Gotta look up a recipe, tomorrow will be an indoors day for me (pouring rain) while the tree people deal with a number of trees. I will be inside, maybe making marmalade.
I am reminded of when I went to stay at one of my Mom’s friend’s house when my parents went away. Her daughter got all excited about the bumpy oranges, so we peeled one each but were NOT very happy with what they tasted like. That family would open their kitchen window and chuck the compost out onto the garden bed – or at least the daughter taught ME that was what was done. when the mom came home she was SO pissed off that we had eaten the oranges, but I remember that she went outside and picked up all the peels out of the garden. Struck me rather hard, in the grocery store yesterday, when that memory arose while I held bumpy oranges in my hands….
