Market Basket $109.55
The HH did the grocery shopping. I sent him with a list but as always, he threw in a few “extras” he thought we’d enjoy. This time he bought smelly sardines, Ah-So sauce {I didn’t like it, but he did} and Kaukauna port wine cheese {which was very thoughtful because it’s a favorite once a year type treat of mine}.
The HH has also decided to fire up the smoker and make beef tips, potato salad and broccoli cashew salad for our Christmas dinner. Which, I am actually looking forward to since we’ve only had BBQ once since we’ve lived here. Smoking meat in the snow though…. that should be interesting.
I’m pretty sure the neighbors will think we’re nuts.
Fisher scones rule!
Pickety bits.
Copy Cat Panera Chicken and Wild Rice Soup from the freezer.
A very sad and rubbery pot roast. 😉 I had stuck a pot roast in the oven and an hour our so later our lovely neighbors invited us over so I turned the oven down and then just as we left threw in some carrots and potatoes.
Well, to make a long story short, we were over there a little longer than I expected and when we got home the pot roast was over cooked and our bellies were full from snacking next door and well, the pot roast went into the fridge.
It turns out though, that an overcooked pot roast makes a WONDERFUL beef stew if your add a can of Rotel and beans and whatever other vegetables you can find in your freezer. So hey, not all was lost.
Looking for a last minute dessert idea? Zoë’s Almond Pear Tart is SUPER easy to make and people will think you spent hours on it.
Don’t have a disposable cake plate on hand? Make your own! 🙂 🙂 🙂
The HH made a pasta salad. It was delicious!
You can never go wrong with Ritz Cracker chicken and a baked potato.
And last but not least, oh what a difference a little white paint makes. 😉 Yesterday I was able to get the walls of the nook area painted. Today I’ll tackle the trim and the french door.
Have a wonderful Monday everyone, I hope it’s a productive one.

Now that’s a pickety platter!

I’m going to make a pickety platter for our Christmas evening! I was asked to bring an hors d’oeuvre and fruit 🙂 I’ll be scrolling/searching your posts for inspiration 🙂

Kaukana Port Wine cheese was a favorite of my mom’s and something I always made sure to have when she and Dad came to visit us at Christmas. Even now, when I see it in the store I smile, thinking of her. We will have one on Christmas to honor her this year (she has since passed, but it is a way to keep her a part of our celebrations).
Merry Christmas to you all!

i noticed one of my favorite things in the photo of the interior of your house—a nice view from the kitchen sink!!!

Next year one of my resolutions is to go as plastic free as I can. I already have reusable produce bags to take with my reusable grocery bags. I need to figure out how to make more to use the bulk bins. I’m not a great sewer but I think I can do it. Sounded up your alley so i’m throwing it out there. If not maybe your other followers have something.
Love the pickety bits, but never quite sure what to grab at the store in terms of meat/sausage.
Merry Christmas!

Maxine, the book “Zero Waste Home” by Bea Johnson gives lots of ideas about homemade replacements for plastic grocery sacks.

Hi Sue and Merry Christmas! Thanks for the book recommedation-I just checked and it’s available thru my local library. Working on my goals for 2020 (thank you, Mavis, for the inspiration!) and I’m looking for ways to cut back on one-use items. I live in NYS and, beginning in March, we’ll be charged for plastic bags in stores–added incentive to stop using them!

So.ething else you can make are beeswax food wraps. That’s my latest project for eliminating plastic. Easy to make, pretty, and reusable.
Leslie says
Me too! Grocery bags are easy to replace. But look at Mavis’ grocery buys. Almost everything comes in plastic or cardboard AND plastic. Seems it will be impossible to take advantage of sales on bacon or shredded cheese, etc. I guess buy everything from deli and have them put in one’s own containers?

I have BBQed in the snow, deep snow at that…in shorts and houseshoes. It was delicious and payback for all the great smells from other folks kitchens!

Don’t worry, your neighbors won’t think your weird for using your smoke in the middle of winter. I live in northern New England and use our Bar-B-Que grill all year long. I sometimes have to shovel off a foot or more of snow after a big storm but still grill all bundled up. I have even waved to my neighbor down the road from grill when I noticed he was out grill also. New Englanders, yup we’re all weird here!

We grill out in the snow… don’t worry, the neighbors will be jealous!
