Sheet Pan Nachos… with homegrown tomatoes. Yes please!
It was a good week in the food department here at Casa de Butterfield. Lot’s of tomatoes to snack on from the garden, and unexpected stock up trip and some homemade goodness. I’d give it a 5/5. 🙂
Tuna and crackers. A weekly staple around here.
Ham and potato tart. Anyone want the recipe?
Veggies and hummus.
Tomato soup for days.
Farmstand $11.00
2 slices of strawberry cheese cake and 2 cukes {ours are another week or two away}.
Beth’s Farm Market $10.93
Probably the most beautiful watermelon I’ve ever seen. Note to self: save some seeds and try to grow a few next summer. After all, since the watermelon was grown here in Maine, I should be able to grow them too, right?
Costco $269.10
Well, I thought I was done with conventional grocery stores for the rest of the year but since I was so close to not only a Costco, but a Market Basket as well when I went down south for the League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair at Mount Sunapee Resort I decided to stock up on rations. Because seriously, why miss out on an opportunity like that!
- Tuna for Tuna Casserole
- Canned chicken for enchiladas, chicken salad and chicken chili
- Rao’s marina for pasta dishes
- Almonds for fruit tarts, power muffins and snacking
- Walnuts for chocolate chip cookies and other baking
- Canned peaches because they don’t expire for 4 years and are loaded with vitamin C and because they area magnificent in my favorite peach cobbler recipe that’s made with canned peaches.
- Diced tomatoes for the Copy Cat Panera Tomato Soup
- Another 25 pounds of rice because what’s a pantry without plenty of beans and rice?
Market Basket $216.41
I was shocked to see that turkey breasts are now going for $11.99 a bag! Did I just get those on sale for $5.99 each a few year ago? Hummus {because it freezes well} puff pastry for vegetable tarts this winter, salmon {for homemade salmon spread}.
Rana raviolis {they are so good! I wish they would have had the butternut squash ones out but spinach and cheese will do}. Fancy cheese, crackers and beer nuts for pickety bits, sun dried tomatoes for the no knead crusty bread and Natalie’s orange juice {a special treat} because it tastes so good.
Honey cornbread mix for when I don’t feel like making homemade maple syrup cornbread from scratch to go with Mel’s drunken beans, almond extract for baking, apple vinegar cider and celery seed for zucchini relish, Chef Boyardee because the HH likes to eat like a 7 year old sometimes.
Malt vinegar for fish and chips, applesauce in case I don’t get around to making it this year for my favorite applesauce spice cake, and a few other needful items.
It’s been an expensive year food wise… but hey, I feel good that we’ve been able to support several local businesses with our summer lunch visits and have spent our money on buying delicious treats from our favorite small {teeny tiny} bakeries and farmstands. I know our larder is well stocked and we are all set for winter, whatever that may bring {I’m hoping for LOADS OF SNOW!!!}.
Life is good!
So how about YOU? Did you stock up on anything for your pantry last week? Are you making any preparations for this winter as well?
Curious minds want to know.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

We aren’t likely to get snowed in here but our pantry is well stocked anyhow. I bought several different shapes of pasta last week to add to soups that we enjoy throughout the week – my 5 yr old loves a thermos of soup for lunch at school, brown sugar, french fried onions, AP Flour, sugar, peanut butter, and eggs. I am still watching sales to stock toiletries and OTC meds. I don’t know about all of you but Fall can’t come soon enough for me.

Angie, I read your comment that your 5 year old likes soup + brown sugar + french fried onions + flour + sugar + PB + eggs in the thermos!! I could not for the life of me figure our what that would taste like!! Then I read through it again and it made MUCH more sense! Thanks for the giggle! 🙂

I didn’t know hummus could be frozen!!!!!! Thanks for the tip, Mavis.
Heidi P says
I didn’t either. I’d love a list of what’s in Mavis’ freezer 🙂

Didn’t know I could freeze hummus. Had one stock up trip to Costco recently, but headed back again. Forgot cat food, batteries. Think I’m going to add some of that canned chicken, it’s sized perfectly for just a few people. Easier to store than a whole chicken, and while I don’t have to worry about snowstorms, I do prep for earthquakes.

Looks like the Blackstone Grill will be out of commission! Keep your fingers crossed. I guess the “chipper” has taken its place for a while.

I’m feeling like I need to stock up more as well. Prices just keep going up and there appears no end in sight. I have defrosted both freezers and now know what I have and what I need. Once I get #3 off to college in Vermont this weekend my focus can turn to that.

Continuing to stock up the freezer and pantry with my garden harvests.
I have frozen lots of diced tomatoes to have on hand for recipes, I made several quarts of chili starter, pizza sauce, and marinara sauce. Today I am making homemade tomato soup for those cold winter nights when you want an easy dinner. (Thanks for the Panera Copycat recipe!) This has been an especially good year for the tomatoes.
I canned several pints of jalapeno peppers and hot Hungarian wax peppers this week and have many more harvests in my future.
Susie says
Rebecca, I’d love to know about your “chili starter” you freeze! Would you share how you do it? 🙂
Christy says
How are you freezing diced tomatoes? Also having a good tomato year in PA and would like to save as much as I can.

Mavis, I would love your recipe for the ham and potato tart. I really enjoy your recipes!

The tart looks good! Of course I want the recipe 😉
This week I took a break from grocery shopping. I did however go to Walmart and snag a free ibotta item. I have noticed that they entice me once a week with a solid name brand item that I would typically buy for my household – for free, and I take the bait. My son devoured the entire bag of goldfish the next day. He’s 12 and has hollow legs. Hoping to slow down grocery shopping until next month. Although, like everyone else…I do notice the prices going up and it is weighing on my mind.

Great stock up. I always feel good with a full pantry. With rising prices, it just feels smart.

I love these posts. I used to visit here quite often years ago then forget the website. I’m so happy I found you again. I plan to stay in most of the fall/winter. Nothing like a pandemic to make you realize just how crowded California really is.

If you haven’t been yet, its almost that time of year. Best fair ever! Go on a weekday and be amazed!

We just discovered Rana ravioli last week! I bought them on a grocery stop when I didn’t feel like cooking after work. We had the ones with mozzarella cheese in them. My HH wasn’t excited because he’s not a big pasta fan, but he raved about them!
We had them with Raos sauce (Italian sausage and mushroom). Delicious!
We even enjoyed the leftovers a few days later. Highly recommend Rana!

Be on the lookout for the butternut squash ones. They’re AWESOME. 🙂
