It was another great week in the food department here at Casa de Butterfield. Lot’s of home grown goodness and food from the pantry. Including these salt potatoes.
I first tried salt potatoes back in 2013 {I think it was Mrs. C. who passed along the recipe} and they are so good, every time we have them we’re like… why don’t we make these more often!?
We had them {for several meals} with green beans and grilled steak tips in garlic butter and let me tell you Bob, it was a winning combination.
There were also a few days that we ate weenies and watermelon {another great combination when it’s too hot too cook}.
But mostly we stuffed our faces with tomatoes last week. LOT’S and LOT’S of tomatoes. 🙂
Caprese salad. It takes less than 5 minuets to make.
There was also caprese salad with roasted brussels sprouts and toast.
There were also a few rounds of Copy Cat Panera Soup with a toasted piece of sourdough with cream cheese and savory tomato jam.
Have I told you we are currently swimming in tomatoes? {We are picking this amount of tomatoes every 2 days. It’s nuts}.
I made 12 jars of savory tomato jam last week. I think I’ll whip up some ketchup and chili sauce this week.
I also made 2 batches of zucchini relish with the zucchini, onions and sweet peppers from our garden.
And a round of jalapeno pepper jelly too. I like using jalapeno pepper jelly during the winter months to line savory tarts and to serve it over softened cream cheese with crackers.
Farmstand $4 {$3 for the cookies, $1.00 for the corn}
General Store $6.48 {$3.69 for the hot dog buns, $2.79 for the milk}
Head Tide Oven $18.55 for a loaf of sourdough and 2 hand pies.
Last week was lovely and slow and had a very homey air about it.
It was lovely.
How was YOUR week? Are you still swimming in vegetables from the garden? Did you make any tasty treats? Curious minds want to know.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

I am swimming in tomatoes here as well. A new recipe I made this year is Yellow Tomato Soup. I grew Orange Wellington tomatoes this year for the first time, and they were slow to start producing, but now they are providing lots and lots of huge tomatoes. Here is the recipe for yellow tomato soup that I found online in case anyone is interested.

We really liked this soup and have frozen several quarts.

I thought you had a bun with only relish and ketchup cause weenies are so skinny now.

Ditto, the hot dog does look tiny!

Yes, that was me! If I recall correctly, I got it from Ina Garten. It is easy, and one of the very few potato recipes that my HH likes! I guess I’ve been reading your blog for a looooong time.

Any problems with the hurricane in your neck of the woods?
Mavis Butterfield says
Nothing to report yet.

What do you use your chili sauce for? I will be swimming in tomatoes in about 2 weeks and once I get all my pasta and pizza sauce done I will still have a pile.
Thanks!

Wow, the sourdough bread and hand pies look lovely, but they are so expensive! $18+ for those three items! Am I the only one who thinks those prices are pretty high?
Dianne says
Yes, but they are luxuries. Those baked goods won’t be around for the next 9 months or so. Never hurts to spoil oneself once in awhile. I love bread and pie! It would be hard for me to resist this special treat. But, look on the bright side, it would be easier to wear off the calories in the warmer months. LOL

We’re swimming in zucchini. For the third week we’ve harvested over 100 lb/week. Friends and neighbors, delivery drivers and people picking up FB marketplace items are all starting to get tired of our free zucchini. I’d freeze more, but the freezers are full. Oh well, the hens love it.
Still waiting for the tomatoes to get some color, but the carrots and beets are starting to get nice and big

I made zucchini sweet pickles with what I had from recipe on the internet. I’ve never had such a bunch of zucchini and summer squash! The pickles are great once they sit for a week or so.

We are harvesting loads of tomatoes, green beans and wax beans about every 2 days. We have been eating them fresh but canning the majority. We’ve added green beans, waxed beans, diced tomatoes and spaghetti sauce to the canning shelves this year. With more to come. It’s a busy time in the garden right now and I love it!

Our tomatoes are done for the season but your post reminds me of the two plus months this summer when we were pulling half a bushel of tomatoes every other day from the garden. It was crazy! We are stocked for a year on diced tomatoes, marinara sauce, tomato sauce, & salsa. We ate caprese salad and tomato sandwiches – goodness they were so good. The bonus is I learned that it takes about 40 tomato plants & the blessing of a good harvest to have enough tomatoes to enjoy fresh and put away for the year.
Gosh I love gardening 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
40 plants! Thanks Angie. I was looking for how many to plant for next summer.
