So apparently my husband had been watching so many cooking show videos with basmati rice in it, that he decided he needed to BUY A BAG and try it out himself.
Can you believe that? We haven’t been grocery shopping since September and the man breaks our shopping streak with a bag of freakin’ rice.
And the funny thing is, we have loads of rice in the pantry, just not basmati rice. Well now we do. 20 pounds to be exact.
Whatever. Husbands. They’re so unpredictable. I don’t even know what to say.
I made Mississippi pot roast and had to sit through the entire meal listening to him talk about how nice and light the rice was. How we should try it with butter and salt next time, or cilantro and lime and on and on it went about all the potential rice pairings.
I threw the extra pot roast and rice into a beef pot pie the next night and then had a bowl of split pea and ham soup the next night while he ate a big bowl of rice for dinner.
I think there was really only one big meal that didn’t have rice in it last week and that was pasta and bread sticks.
Last night we had chicken curry and rice with a little fresh homegrown cilantro on it. Do you like curry? It’s so good! And even better with rice. 😉
And lastly, our neighbor brought over 2 slices of chocolate cake last night for us {we have the best neighbors!!!}. She said it was Ina Garten’s recipe and that the cake has 2 pounds of chocolate in it. It was fantastic.
Note to self: FIND THAT RECIPE!
The HH is still out of his almond milk {but we have rice!} and I am still using Nido powdered milk in my 2 cups of tea each day. I’m down to 1 1/2 canisters of whipped cream {for my hot cocoa} and we still have over a dozen eggs in the fridge.
It was a good week. A little heavy on the rice… but there was nothing I could do about that. 😉
How about YOU? Any surprises in the food department at your house? Do you have any good dessert recipes you want to share? I think I want to try something new for Thanksgiving this year.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

Have the HH try Jasmine rice next, we like it even BETTER than basmati!!

I like that you’re patiently waiting to purchase Maine grains and then 20 lbs of rice just shows up! I guess on the bright side, he might be able to make rice milk now he’s out of almond milk.
We went grocery shopping on Friday for Thanksgiving and because some recent health changes have required a few ingredient swaps, and I could not believe how expensive everything was. I’m so glad our freezer is stocked because it was downright shocking. Our cart wasn’t even full, and I think the total was still more than I’ve ever paid even for a massive grocery trip in preparation for a full week of freezer meal prep. And we ordered our turkey separately, and I didn’t even buy the fresh ingredients yet! At this rate, I’m seriously considering doing takeout for Christmas instead of cooking.
GrannyB says
Mel I hadn’t even thought about the HH making rice milk. Great idea, but so hilarious!!
For Christmas, I’ve decided we are having chicken & noodles and chili. Everyone who comes can bring appetizers and desserts. These food prices are ridiculous. Glad I got my Thanksgiving stuff several weeks back before this latest increase!!
Mavis as for desserts, I’ve been craving your Old Fashioned Carrot Cake Bars. I’m hoping I can hold off until Thanksgiving in order to make them then, but we will see.

The best deal I found was a 10lb turkey (actually 9.98lb) for $4.89 at Publix! The turkeys were .49 cents a pound. Apparently, they are normally 1.49 a pound. They had a limit of 2 turkeys but we only needed one. There are 3 of us, so 10lbs is perfect.
We also bought a HUGE pumpkin pie at Costco for 5.99 – it is already gone, so we will need to buy another one . . .
Nancy Settel says
how about rice for Thanksgiving this year? Just a thought.
Teckla says
Yes, a nice rice pilaf!
jOYCE says
That cake sure does look good!!!! Reward after all that rice LOL.
Linda Noss says
It sure does! Needs to be on my table.
Robin in WI says
What, no rice with the cake? Just kidding. 😉 I don’t blame the HH — basmati rice is better than regular white rice. 🙂
Jamie says
It’s making me feel a little crazy you won’t run to a grocery store for milk!!!
Tamara says
Rice pudding!
Lori says
In his defense, Basmati is the best!
2 pounds of chocolate??? Wow that is a lot but I bet it is so good.
Laura Z. says
Do you know about kheer? It’s a delicious indian rice pudding that’s either cooked with cardamom or rose water. My favorite rice pudding on the planet.
Love curry! Eat a Thai one and and Indian one at least once a week.
Ranee says
The empty basmati rice will make a cool throw pillow, after it’s empty. I know how you like to get the most out of your money spent, so I think that would be a great way to use the empty bag. Just a thought.
Brenda says
I also love and go crazy for Basmati rice . I found and Indian food place that sells all
kinds
of Basmati rice. I had no idea how many kinds of this rice there is. And the fact that its better than plain old white rice is bonus. Embrace a healthier rice.
Stephanie says
Basmati rice is SO good (and so is jasmine, as someone mentioned above). Twenty pounds is just…a lot, haha.
I still have to sit down and make out my Thanksgiving menu. I’m vegetarian and the household cook, so I usually make a different main course every year. Not sure what I feel like making this year, but we’ll see. 🙂
That chocolate cake looks amazing!
Hawaii Planner says
My husband is Persian, & basmati rice is all we eat here. His rice recipes are amazing. Lots of ways to serve it, but I prefer the more traditional kind, with tahdiq (a rice crust). SOOOO good.
Rebecca in MD says
My husband has requested some new recipes – – – although he never gets tired of hamburgers and pizza………….but I wish he would.
This week I made some stuffed cabbage rolls (first time ever) with homemade bread and that was a hit. Bonus that there were enough leftovers for another dinner. Tonight we’re having Korean BBQ shredded chicken and biscuits (store bought sauce, onions, and chicken thighs dumped in the crockpot).
I think Tamara’s suggestion for making rice pudding for Thanksgiving dessert is brilliant. Maybe you could get the HH to make it.
I have finished all of my shopping for my Thanksgiving feast. My 18 year-old grandson is interested in cooking, and he is coming over the day before to help with cooking, and staying overnight to continue helping on Thanksgiving Day. I am really looking forward to that!
Marcia says
Ha ha, I’ve never been able to find that pretty long basmati rice. I love it when I get it with Indian takeout. I need to watch my carbs anyway.
After reading the title, I thought “eh, a bag of rice isn’t so bad”, then I saw it was 20 lb. OMG.
Beth says
Let’s see…food surprises….last week I got my first Misfit Market order and I had ordered watermelon radishes (I had never had them so I wanted to try them)- I found a recipe online for a salad with the radishes, oranges, toasted walnuts and goat cheese and it was a hit- so pretty and fresh tasting.
Thanksgiving desserts will be pecan pie bars (thank you Mel for the suggestion), tiny pumpkin pies, individual size apple crisps, and a couple of kinds of cupcakes (chocolate I’m sure because of my daughter and maybe spice). I did save a recipe for cranberry lemon bars from The New York Times cooking site last week also so maybe that too. I want to do small desserts so everyone can try more than one and it will be easier to have people take the leftovers home.
Dianne says
Can you shoot that recipe to me at Dianne.Wilhelm57@gmail.com? Those Cranberry-Lemon bars sound amazing!
Beth says
I just saw your comment and emailed the recipe to you- my email is bshawmeyer@gmail.com if you don’t get it.
Stacey says
I get Misfits and love trying out new veggies! I am eating a plant-based diet for health reasons, and it’s helpful to get a whole box of organic produce. I also love helping to reduce food waste.
Lauralli says
I’m not 100% positive but I think your ‘The Best Chocolate Cake on the Planet’ is the same as Ina’s (Beatty’s) cake. It’s the only chocolate cake recipe I use. Her frosting might be different from yours but I think it’s the same, too. 🙂
Virginia says
That husband of yours, he’s a keeper. And his 20 pound bag of basmati! You’re a lucky lady, Mavis.
Stacey says
I agree Mavis. That he will buy rice AND cook it? Just wow!
Barbara Dougherty says
Actually, basmati rice is more easily digested too!! Yummmm.
Judy says
The best basmati rice in my family’s opinion is India Gate rice. Amazing! It’s all my daughter will eat now. Here’s how I prepare it: 1 cup rice in covered baking dish. Add 2 1/4 cup boiling water, a bit of salt and butter to taste. 35 minutes and 350 degrees in the oven. Comes out perfectly every time. That’s really easy.
Judy says
BTW my daughter used to dislike rice until this!
Tawni says
Too funny! We’re basmati fans too, so I get it. Commenting because in yesterday’s New York Times (11/14/21), the T Magazine has a bunch of articles on rice in different countries and cultures. Your husband would probably enjoy it! 🙂
Dianne says
Love Basmati and Jasmine rice. So much better than white rice. I don’t use white rice anymore. I’m sure you will enjoy it as well, Mavis!
Cindy Miller says
Lol! I don’t know about the rice situation but, that beef pie looks amazing! Great comfort food after coming in from outside chores! 🙂
Gail says
For those of us who haven’t had basmati rice, what kind of white rice do you like? I love Uncle Bens converted rice —- the kind that cooks in about 20 minutes and results in 3 cups of cooked rice per 1 cup uncooked. It’s a nice sticky rice. I do plan to try Basmati after these rave reviews.

I’m so excited to see if I won a favorite things giveaway
I almost got up at 5am this morning, before I realized I’m a day early

What the heck is it with men?? We might have been having something for YEARS and they go to the grocery store and pick up an item that we have had for years, but maybe they see a different brand and they go on and on like it was some huge discovery!! And of course it is much better! I dunno, they are sort of crazy…..
Dawn says
You could make rice pudding or Portuguese Sweet Rice with all that rice.
I also make microwaveable heating pads with rice.
That cake looks delicious!
CINDY BRICK says
MANY thanks, Mavis, for my beans and towels…I barely made the notification deadline, but I made it. (We’ve been helping care for my mom for the past month, and I haven’t had as much time to read e-mail, etc. as usual. I’m glad I noticed your message.)
These will be wonderful this winter.
I’m a big fan of basmati also, though jasmine is good, too. And yes, you CAN tell the difference right away. I buy regular rice for stuff that doesn’t need that extra boost of flavor. (Try beef stew over it — yum.)
Just found turkey at 33 cents a pound at Meijers here in Michigan. Was given a few pumpkins, so I’ll bake those, scoop out the pulp, and make some pie, as well as soup.
Thanks again.

Marrying an Asian man was a real education in rice. Different rice for different cooking uses. I think everyone in our family has a different favorite and we used to go through 75-100lbs. a year.
