Nothing quite hits the spot like a Five Guys Burger, fries and a strawberry milkshake. It a little greasy and probably not the healthiest thing on the planet, but man oh man is it good every once in a while.
I take my glasses off to eat… he puts his on. I think that means we are officially old people now.
Sheet pan party nachos with chili, another winner. Especially on a cold and wet day.
This summer I tucked away a couple of quarts of local strawberries specifically for the homemade Christmas jam I like to make around this time of year. This stuff is so good, I almost don’t want to give any of it away as gifts.
Especially since I used some of my Weck tulip jars.
Toast and jam for breakfast… does it get any better than that?
Thanksgiving. This year I went with turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes {made with sour cream and butter… no milk} sweet potato casserole, cranberry cornbread stuffing {with leftover rice!!}, and cherry Jell-O {I was out of cherry pie filling so I just made plain Jell-O which is totally not the same and kind of sad}.
Even though we love leftovers, since it was just the two of us this year, I decided to divide up the sweet potatoes and the stuffing {one to cook, one to freeze}.
Now I have two side dishes ready to go for our Christmas dinner!! Pretty smart don’t you think?
I also whipped up two turkey pot pies for the freezer as well.
Leftovers…
Mashed potatoes, gravy and jam… for breakfast. Perfection.
I think we’re down to one last serving of sweet potatoes. I’m not sure what I’ll make tonight {maybe salmon?} to go with the last bit of Thanksgiving leftovers, but they were sure fun while they lasted.
Now it’s time to start thinking about gingerbread cake and Christmas cookies.
Oh how I love this time of year. And all the glorious sugar filled treats that go along with it. 🙂
How about you? Have you finished up all your Thanksgiving leftovers yet? Have you started on your holiday baking? Do you have any new cookies or cake recipes you plan on trying this year? Curious minds want to know {and we want the links to the recipes too!!}.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

I used the last 5 cups of turkey last night and made Brunswick stew. SO good. The cookie baking starts at my house this weekend. I always start with the ones that freeze well and then make the ones that don’t right before Christmas. It’s a wonderful time of year.

No Thanksgiving leftovers here. We sold our house after two days on the market and have a two week window to pack and leave and have been busy as all can be. We are out and on the road Thursday and headed East. I have been surprised by how much food we have had stored in the freezer and pantry and we are still working through it. Beef Burgundy does not freeze well, it gets so strong. I found trout from 2017 and not sure I try them. They are vacuum sealed, but I think 4 years is a bit long for frozen fish. I have just been grocery shopping for bread and milk and apples for the past few months.

Congrats on selling your house quickly!! 🙂

Oh, try the fish! Just have a back-up (tuna?) in case…

I made Amberlina’s sweet potato casserole for the first time. It was delicious! Thanks for the recipe!

I sent the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers to work for lunch for my husband today.
We LOVED the Brussels sprouts and apples recipe you posted, but swapped out the cranberries for bacon and onions, as another reader suggested, since I made stuffing with cranberries and cranberry-orange relish… We made it twice since our feast, it was so good!!
I am mixing up the dry ingredients of several cookie recipes today to save a step when I bake closer to Christmas. As for new recipes, I’m trying your chocolate chip cookie recipe, and the oatmeal fruitcake cookie recipe below in place of Christmas stollen bread to use up some candied mixed fruit I’ve had sitting around:

Hoping it’s not a dud!

Kirsten, I think mixing up the dry ingredients for baking cookies is brilliant! Such smart planning. I’m going to give it a try.

With all those goodies, how bout sharing your weight loss tips?

Next year add a block of cream cheese to those potatoes and you will be in heaven!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes!!! Cream cheese in mashed potatoes is the best! I am trying to ration mine though in case I decide to make a cheesecake. 🙂

I finally made your cherry cola jello salad for Thanksgiving. It was a hit with everyone but my son who thought it was too sweet. Will definitely be making it again!
Oh and jello and chocolate cheesecake were our only leftovers since dinner was at the in-laws. I think I am going to freeze half the cheesecake so I don’t keep eating it!

Freezing the side dishes is BRILLIANT!!! You never cease to amaze me, Mavis!!!
We are planning to make a bunch of batches of what we call cocoons (they have several different names – Mexican wedding cookies, Italian wedding cookies, etc) to give to my husband’s work mates. It’s going to be a long process. We roll them into crescent shapes and that’s what takes up so much time. I saw the Pioneer Woman just uses a tablespoon cookie scoop! I may try that to shorten the process!
I’ve also been informed by my oldest grandchild that we have to make gingerbread because “it’s our tradition”! So we will be doing that too! We found a new recipe that uses golden syrup and want to give that a try!

Inquiring minds want to know, how many freezers do you have? How do you find room for everything you cook? I am absolutely jealous of how you have so many meals ready to go in the freezer..
Mavis Butterfield says
Two mini freezers and the one at the bottom of our refrigerator, so not really a ton of freezer space, but I’ve gotten pretty good at organizing things over the years so I’m able to pack a lot of stuff in.

We tried the copycat Panera wild rice soup recipe with the leftover turkey you posted. It was delicious, but it makes a lot so I will probably freeze some. Perfect thing to warm you up as the weather turned cold over Thanksgiving here in Virginia. It was nice to have after working outside in the yard. Thank you for the recipe. 🙂
