With the exception of 1 meal, it was a FANTASTIC week in the meal department here at Casa de Butterfield.
There was the usual beans and rice {with some guacamole from the freezer section}.
And then the next day {the dud meal} was leftovers. Let’s just say stuffing, peas and beans {no rice} is not a winning combination. Not even the salsa and dollop of sour cream helped.
But later that day…. We received a care package from my in-laws.
And so the HH made us a nice steak dinner inside {even if he did set off all the smoke alarms}.
The next night be made pulled pork. And some of it stuck to the pan {apparently I bought junky foil the last time I stocked up!}.
But whatever, the nachos we made with it were delicious!
And then later in the week we met up with Kiln Guy and The Chef {our previous neighbors} for a holiday lunch. {I’ll tell you all about the place we went tomorrow}. I had a steak and ale pie {with a puff pastry top} and it was so good, I want the HH to re-create it for me at home.
Going out with neighbors for a meal, that’s what old people do, right?
This is good news! The way I see it we are adapting to old age {you know, after the kids have left home} pretty well. Soon I suspect we’ll be buying things off of informercials and yelling at each other from across the room because one of us will refuse to get a hearing aid.
As we were leaving the restaurant they asked us to walk back to their car with them because they had something for us.
It was a sack full of produce and milk!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Which was HILARIOUS because during our meal {we were at the restaurant for 2 1/2 hours!!!} one of the things Kiln Guy had asked me was what I missed eating since I started my no grocery shopping challenge at the end of September and I had said fresh produce… and milk!
Funny Funny!
A big salad!! What a treat.
The next night the HH made a sheet pan full of roasted vegetables and weenies {brussels sprouts, butternut squash, potatoes and onions}.
And luckily there were plenty of leftovers because that’s what were having for lunch today. Two meals in one. I love when that happens!
HOW ABOUT YOU?

I am not as strict as you but my pantry/freezer food will easily last through February. I began in October. I do this every year for winter. We do get carryout occasionally and I go to grocery first of month for fruit and produce.
Hubby has foods he likes that he gets for himself.
I plan to go to Costco in January. My list is getting long, but I will be replacing things we have used. Back on October butter was limit 1 and my stock is getting low..

How funny that your friends gave you produce and milk! I have a very full fridge right now but this week we will whittle away at it because our new fridge gets delivered next weekend.
Last week I cooked a turkey that I bought on a deep discount so of course we had turkey sandwiches and turkey noodle casserole (frozen egg noodles cooked, turkey, a couple of packets of chicken or turkey gravy prepared and mixed in and then baked in the oven- it’s a family favorite). This time I added frozen peas and then buttered bread crumbs to the top and my husband was sooo annoyed! He said it made the turkey and noodles all wrong…whatever….
The highlight of our week might have been Friday night when we made boboli pizzas and garlic knots and then ordered Coldstone Ice Cream because they are offering free delivery in December…it was a fun treat and we ate it while watching a Christmas movie.

Thoughtful gifts you’re receiving 🙂
I’m cooking from the freezer/pantry as well but I don’t have your rule. When I hit “gotta have fresh” I go to the store. Hubster is not a fan of kale or greens and all freezer veggies are garden greens I blanched and vacuum sealed.
Tonight I’m trying an InstaPot recipe for Chicken/Kale stew. I’ll serve it over rice also from the freezer. Here’s to hoping he likes it enough!

Do you count the cost of the meals you eat out?
I think maybe the kiln guy is reading your blog and knows what foods you need!
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope. If we buy something {like a take out pizza or bakery treats} to be enjoyed at home it gets counted. Otherwise it comes out of our “date day/entertainment fund”.
Annette says
Have you seen Reynolds non-stick foil? Life changing.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks, I will tell the HH.
Jennifer says
oh Yeah. That stuff is great! We use it all the time.

Do you mind sharing your recipe for pulled pork? This weekend we made your creamy scalloped potatoes with ham it was delicious!

I made Almond cranberry coffee cake! It is soooooo good. However I will say to anyone making this recipe, do what Mavis says. When she says grease and flour the pan, then grease and flour the pan. I sprayed Pam into the bundt cake pan. It would not come out even after using a knife around the edges. The end result? Chunks and pieces of cake with a lot stuck to the pan. No glaze (cause it didn’t need it). I told my husband just eat and no comments. We love it falling apart or not. 🙂 Next time I will follow directions.
Dianne says
Thanks for the tip. I hope to make soon as well. I would of used Pam myself!
Kari says
Pam makes a baking one with flour. It works great for this sort of thing. I have a Norwegian almond cake recipe that needs greased and floured well, and the Pam baking with flour works great!

I live in Omaha and Omaha Steaks are the best! Enjoy!

I’ve been shopping for two weeks to a month lately. Stores are so crazy. We do go to a few stores to get the best prices on certain items like pet supplies. Inflation is crazy. I would be tempted to try and not shop for X amount of time, but I feel I need to try and keep on sales while they’re here with the bigger holidays.
J says
Yes, agree! I save lots of money shopping weekly for sales or specials over what I would spend if I stocked up for months at a time, plus I’d course I always have fresh produce and dairy!

You have the best friends to know just what to surprise you with! 🙂
