This past week my I ate like a teenager. Multiple trips to the ice cream stand, pizza, and food on the go. And with the temps in the upper 80’s/ early 90’s I think there was a day or two in there where I must have drank a gallon or two of water each day. I felt slow, and sluggish but hey, that’s summer.
Or at least summer with out a/c.
Pizza. It’s got to be cheese or Hawaiian.
The last of the BBQ and sides {from the previous week}.
Costco $181.91
The HH jumped at the chance to go to Costco with a friend… for what else… more meat to toss on the barbie.
$98.37 on meat He’s out of control! Plus another $7.99 on Nathan’s hot dogs {the best bun length weenie in my opinion}. I think we’re good for the summer, what do you think? How long would this 10 million pound assortment last at your house?
What in the world do people do with dried shredded pork? The picture on the jar shows a {re-hydrated} pork sandwich.
Steak tips. Oh my. Pictured is my breakfast plate the day after the big BBQ.
Giant Costco burgers that barely fit in your mouth with a side of Famous Dave’s pickle chips. {The pickles were AWESOME. The giant burgers though, just okay. I think I’d rather have the ready to go freezer patties from the freezer case or ones that were hand made.}
Date day. Hot pancakes at noon on a 90 degree day. With no a/c. The pancake place though was wonderful. I’ll tell you all about it soon.
Last nights dinner. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Can you tell I have no interest in cooking lately?
And last but not least, the HH wants me to ask you if you have tried watermelon with coarse salt. He thinks it’s pretty amazing. Me, not so much.
Fall. It’s just a little over 2 months away. The countdown to puffy coats is on!
Have a wonderful Monday everyone, stay cool.

I don’t like fresh watermelon at all, but I love watermelon rind pickles, so I could see the salt working in kind of the same way.
It’s been in the mid to upper 90’s here, so we’ve been going for ice cream more as well. But we mostly have soft-serve places, and that melts almost instantly when it’s this hot, so it’s hard to eat. We both came home last night covered in ice cream drips.
Toni says
Ok, I don’t understand why you don’t have AC??? Please explain, because that is miserable. If you’re not broke why suffer? I hate being hot!
We usually only put salt on watermelon if it’s not ripe enough. I have also had a little drizzle of balsamic vinegar on it.
Thanks for your updates you crack me up.
Jeanie says
I’m curious about the ac too.
Joy M Adamson says
I’ve always put salt on my watermelon. Delicious.
LaToya says
Same.
Watermelon with salt – the more, the bigger, the better.
Back in the day we tossed oranges & watermelon in salt + Tapatio hot sauce and sat on the corner eating it out of tall Tupperware cups.
Mavis Butterfield says
Hot sauce? I had never heard of anyone putting salt on their fruit until the HH did it and now all of you!
Caroline says
I’ve been enjoying your blog for quite some time now and feel the need to comment for the first time. Dried shredded pork is used as a topping in Chinese food for rice porridge (congee). Please don’t perpetuate negative judgments against food that you’re unfamiliar with.
Pam Favorite says
I’ve often heard people say “We need to have a conversation about …” yet when a question is asked there’s always someone who objects to the question. There was nothing negative about her question.
Lisa Rostocki says
The comment has been edited. That isn’t what it originally said. There was commentary added before that has been removed.
Mable says
I get so tired of people being offended by random things, instead of saving their outrage for racism, the mess at the border, the mess at the top…she was not nasty, she was just asking a question.
Robin in WI says
My MIL salts her watermelon too. 🙂 I tried it out of curiosity and it’s not bad – brings out a different flavor, like salted vs unsalted tomato.
That meat assortment would last maybe 2 weeks at our place; my husband is a carnivore. 🙂 I cut back on carbs (grains, fruit, vegs) too due to a strong family history of Type 2, and finally started losing weight and feeling better. We look for meat, eggs, and dairy from certified- humane/organic farms where the animals are outside and treated well, and never buy lamb or veal.
Jennifer says
That amount of meat would last us about a week…but there are eight of us right now (we have some extras living here). We’ve been trying to cut most carbs, too.
Heat is around 100 here, humidity makes it feel much hotter. It isn’t terrible yet, I’ll start melting once it hits 110 and higher…add the humidity and it will feel like 125 or more. I like salt on watermelon and cucumbers, but I like them without salt, too.
Tracy says
Around 100 and very humid?? :::::THUD::::
Danni says
My family is from TX and OK so they out salt on most fruit. 🙂 I have five boys eating at my house. I can not make a meal unless it has meat as the main with a carb side and veggies.
Kari says
I grew up salting my watermelon, as that’s how my family served it. Typically I eat it plain now, or served with fresh squeezed lime and chopped fresh mint.
Lana says
That much meat would last the two of us months. We are small meat eaters here like 3 oz at a time and we mostly share what one person would eat. But, it keeps the grocery bill down!
Chelsea Nelson says
Here’s an article about that kind of dried pork with suggestions toward the bottom on how to use it.

Tamara says
If the watermelon is room temp or warm from the garden – no salt; if it is cold I use a little salt. Just how I grew up. By the way, I really like the picture of your house with the golden glow on the roof. Recently you mentioned painting the front door red but I like the robin’s egg blue; it pops against the red of the house.
Beth says
I haven’t tried salt on watermelon but my mom puts salt on her cantaloupe. Last night we had a version of pickety bits for dinner- we sat outside on our deck and ate cheese, prosciutto, baguette slices with dipping sauce and melon…and played Clue…my 21 year old daughter pulled it out of the game closet and it was fun to see the score cards from long ago in her handwriting…summer nights are the best!
Deanna Allen says
NO salt on watermelon only on cantaloupe and tomato slices.
Rebecca in MD says
Not a fan of salt on fruit. My Mom always salted her watermelon and cantaloupe, though.
Those Costco burger packs are 1/2 pound each – – – an employee told me that, and I have verified it through my kitchen scale. I buy the burger packs and put two in a freezer bag to make a pound of ground beef. Saves me from having to weigh and portion out the regular pack.
We are Nathan’s hot dog fans also. Have you seen the new foot long version in stores?
We have lots of sandwich dinners in the summer. BLT’s, tuna fish, hot dogs, sloppy Joe, etc. are part of the regular rotation. A new favorite is buying packages of thinly shaved beef for cheesesteak subs.
Mavis Butterfield says
I have not seen the foot longs! Do you use special buns with them?
Christie says
Careful mulching with grass clippings. I did it one year and have been weeding grass from my raised beds every year since. I’ve had good luck with straw though!
Tracy says
I buy one bale of salt hay….no seeds of any kind, inexpensive, very diff from regular Timothy or alfalfa hay. Each bale lasts me at least a full season. Looks pretty and very easy to rake up and compost, allows air but no light. I only use it for veggies as it keeps strawberries off the wet ground, keeps fungi from splashing on tomatoes, protects zucchini from wet, melons from rot, potatoes grow right through it easily, conserves moisture around everything else, etc.
Bea says
Yum, I see you got the Meyer Lemon cookies from Costco. I’ve enjoyed the crispiness with a cup of tea.
Mavis Butterfield says
I may have eaten an entire sleeve all by myself today. 🙂
Betty Richardson says
Do you include meat in your grocery totals? I get $1571.78 so far this year.
It’s great that hubby is enjoying shopping and cooking with his new BBQ.
I love your website! Look forward to reading it every day.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks for catching that. I forgot to add this weeks grocery total to my year end tally. Fixed.
Tracy T says
I’ve always sated watermelon….until I tried a squeeze of lime juice. Way better and not bad for you like the excess salt is.
I can’t believe you are melting at your temps. That would be fall for us in Texas.
Enjoy all that extra ice cream 🙂
Renay bennett says
A gal who works at my neighborhood grocery store is from Jalisco Mexico and they put lime juice on their watermelon.
Wendy Clark says
Salt on the watermelon is a must. Just a little, and especially if it is ice-cold melon. High is 93 in my part of Alabama and the humidity is unbelievable. Girl, get you some A.C!
Julia says
The Hispanic marker near us has a paprika/salt combo that they have at the fruit stand. You can put it onto any melon or pineapple. It’s delicious — also on fresh ears of corn. A little spiciness on melon is delicious, as is lime. And ditto to sliced canteloupe or honeydew wrapped in serrano ham, prosciutto, or other very thinly sliced salted meats. Gourmet treat that is EASY and very keto-friendly. What I cannot stand, a million times UGH! is that feta cheese and watermelon salad that everyone has been bringing to potlucks lately. I just CAN.NOT. EVEN. (I don’t blame the melon. It’s the stinky cheese aspect of it.)
Julia says

Lanie says
We went to San Antonio this summer and tried a fruit bowl with that combo, and we really liked it!
Molly Jo says
Tajin (near mexican food area of store 2 bottle for $5 here in NW Ohio) is a lime, chili and sea salt that you can put on any melon or pineapple or corn or fish or chicken or POPCORN YUM it is my new addiction.
Mary says
Did you have pancakes at Polly’s? I love it that you moved to New England and blog about your field trips here. I love being a local tourist and get good ideas about places to go from your blog. Have you been to Tamworth? Adorable little town with 2 eateries on the river, a Country Doctor museum and distillery.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes on Polly’s Pancake Parlor. We have not been to Tamworth yet, thanks for the recommendations.
Emily says
Tell your husband I like salt on my watermelon.
It’s how my grandpa used to eat it.
Nancy from mass says
Yes to salt on watermelon, apples and grapefruit (my boss great fruit orchard and he’s the one that told me about that) . I used to think salt on watermelon and apples was a New Hampshire thing, since that’s where I grew up. But I guess not
