Yesterday my little friend E.T. and I woke up to the sound of the HH’s tractor pushing 8 inches of snow down our driveway. 24 hours before the storm hit, the weather forecasters were predicting up to 2 feet of snow. So when I looked out the window and noticed we didn’t get a crazy amount of the fluffy white powder…. I pulled the covers over my head and went back to sleep.
Only 8 inches? Whoop Te Do. We had that much snowfall 2 months ago. I need more. Much, much more.

Here’s some of the food we ate this past week:
Homemade turkey chowder served with a side of Panera bread {thanks to a Christmas gift card}. The soup was freakin’ amazing. Anyone want the recipe?
Texas tamales and dirty rice.
Leftover dirty rice with beef tips.
Leftover beef tips made into a nice spicy soup.
Pork fried rice. {I was able to use up 2 of the 40+ pork chops we still have sitting the freezer.
Beecher’s Mac and Cheese. The best ready made mac and cheese on the planet {well, at least The Girl and I think so. The HH isn’t a huge fan}. I plan on having another serving for breakfast this morning.
Sweet treat of the week: Blueberry buckle. I need to make it more often. The crumb topping is spot on.
And last but not least…
Market Basket: $18.87
I guess when the HH called to ask if I needed anything at the store and I said, “WE ONLY NEED MILK” he heard me say “We need milk, 3 boxes of cereal and 1 giant bag of chips.” Husbands. I do believe they have selective hearing.
Total Spent This Week $18.87
Total Spent in January on Groceries $41.19
How about YOU? Are you eating down your pantry in January? How is it going? Did you get snow this weekend too? If so, how much? Curious minds want to know.
Have a great Monday everyone, and don’t forget to bundle up. It’s downright chilly out there {a high of 4 degrees is predicted at our place today. Yikes.}

I’d love the chowder recipes as well! Did a big grocery shop for the month. Spent $130 mostly on non perishable stuff. Will be doing like you for the rest of the month just picking up milk and veggies. We have plenty of meat and other stuff on hand. Made pork and sauerkraut in the crockpot and mashed potatoes yesterday. Saturday was my birthday so we got takeout from my fav local Italian restaurant and bakery. Alvaro’s Bakery is on my block and they have to die for Italian meals, bread and baked good. If you are ever in Harrisburg, PA you should check them out!

I would love the Turkey chowder recipe! We are huge homemade soup fans!!!

We grow black raspberries here, because my parents found a tangle of them on the property when they first moved here 40+ years ago. No idea what the variety is, but they sure are tasty.
All of the food looks wonderful! Thank you for sharing!

Everything looks delicious!! We are north of Boston and got about 8 inches. It’s 2 degrees this morning!!
Stay warm and cozy, Janie

Yes please to the turkey chowder recipe!

Hi Mavis! No snow in Boise this weekend- lots of rain here with more in the forecast this week- we are having warmer than normal weather so no snow. I made a delicious sausage and kale soup last night with sausage from the freezer- does that count for eating down the freezer? Stay warm!!

We are at 2 1/2 feet of snow and counting here in VT. Trust me, it’s a workout just to wade through it (thigh-deep) to get to the chicken coop. And 6 below zero. Be careful what you wish for…… 🙂
After 2 hours outside shoveling and doing chores, I Intend to spend the rest of the day inside planning the vegetable garden!
Teri says
Looks good. Where do you get the Mac & cheese? I’d like to try it. Stay warm!

Costco a few months back.

I found a recipe in a magazine a few years back for Beechers Mac and Cheese. I make it all the time.

Would you share the recipe with us, please. Hooray for home made! Thanks
Ramona says
I’ll share it when in a few days when I am back home.

Pork Chops! This is one of our favorite recipes on the PLANET (but why wouldn’t it be – sauteed in butter!!?!?!)
if the link doesn’t work, search Allrecipes for Modenese pork chops with 580 4.5/5 star reviews.

Saute onion and mushrooms before browning (not part of the recipe, but SO good), and if the pan is big enough, just leave them in, to the side, or remove and add back in at the end. DO NOT simmer 20 minutes. Even at 1 inch thick, 15 minutes is too long.
On another note, I actually noticed on the weather report for Boston (HOW many thousands of miles away?) that they only had 4 inches, so I was wondering about you… There’s still time 🙂

No snow here, we are spending the rest of the winter in Spain, -4C at home in UK 20C here during day today will drop to 8C maybe tonight. Snow in theSierra Nevada but not here. I love winter at home but my own DH hates it

19 inches and still snowing here in akron ohio! Thank God for neighbors with snow shovels and snowblowers! I see making cookie trays as a thank you 🙂

Yesterday (in upstate-western NY) when I went out to feed the pigs we had 8.5 inches. By the time lunch time rolled around the wind had picked up and it kept snowing, so no accurate measurement possible. We got under a foot, though. This morning it was -4F with a -26F windchill. We had a chicken escape, so we went out to get her back in and it was 2F and is a -18 windchill…..

Snow. None here in the Seattle area. But we had a screaming deal from Alaska Airlines and used it to head to Southern California to see friends and get some sun. Got there to pouring down rain… went to take a 20 minute flight from LAX to Sunny San Diego. Due to the government shut down, flight went from 20 minutes to a 5 hour ordeal. Arrived in time for a monsoon, and resulting mudslides etc.
It was TWENTY degrees warmer… for that we were thankful.

My family also loves pork fried rice. When I make it I marinate the pork for a couple of hours in Hoison sauce and then sear the pork separately before moving forward with the rest of my recipe. I usually use pork tenderloin (which is very inexpensive at Aldi) and it just needs to marinate for an hour or so.

Recipe for the buckle and soups, please.

You were asking about snow and how much everyone got…well, if I got an accurate count, I think it was about 23 flakes! It was just a tease, although sometimes we do get snow here in the sunny south! And yes to the offer of the soup recipe! It looks delish!
Valerie says
I found some funky stuff in my freezer that I threw out but we had meatball stew that was delicious and I used frozen leek for soup. Win win. One dish at a time

Just want you to know how much I enjoy reading your blog. We are in the Mountains of WV, and only got about 8 inches of snow here, too. It is really really cold, though. Should be 0 tonight – it was 5 degrees last night. I love the boots Miss Lucy has on. I am curious – how did she react when you first put them on her? My little guy (half pekingese, half shih-tzu) gets frozen paws, and then cries to go back out in the snow – he loves the stuff! I have thought about boots, but wondered if dogs really wear them. LOL, I can see tons of folks buying them for dogs who then refuse to even try them! Miss Lucy looks fairly happy in the picture, which is encouraging.
Hope you get more snow – I look forward to it too. We haven’t had a good 2footer this year!
Gee says
Central upstate New York – We got 14 inches, but they were predicting 26. I’ll take it. But it was 5 below last night, about 3 below right now, and heading down. Windchill this afternoon was 25 below.
I’m in my recliner embroidering and watching movies on roku.
Laura T. says
It’s funny how they predict so much snow & then it fizzles out. That happened here in Illinois too. We got maybe 5-6 inches only. Right now it’s 10 with a wind chill of -7. It’s supposed to get even colder soon.
Lisa says
Here in Northern Maine we had about 22 inches of snow. That wasn’t a big deal but what was dangerous was that it was a real light snow and very blustery. Very poor visibility! Poor hubby spent all of yesterday and today cleaning out the driveway and shoveling off the roof. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be -28 with the wind and then another 6 inches of snow mid week.
Beth says
I am impressed that Lucy kept her boots on. We invested in two sets of boots for our border collies a few years ago and within minutes they were lost in the snow or chewed off. After that we just took the time when we came inside to remove the ice balls from between their toes and wash off the salt.
Karen says
Yes please I’d like your recipe of turkey chowder. Thank you

We got a little over two feet of snow… it was lovely! I would love your chowder recipe and also your crumble topping. I’ve never gotten mine quite right.

If that’s the same mac & cheese that my sis-in-law got at Costco & brought to a family birthday party – YES! it was amazing!! I can’t wait until we get a Costco closer to Rockford, IL. I also would love your soup recipes. And what about those DELICIOUS LOOKING TX tamales?? Are they homemade? Recipe please? We too had predictions of more snow than we ever get, but the blowing and drifting make it seem like twice as much. I think tonight and tomorrow we are looking at wind chills in the -20s. Sounds like a good day to stay home with soup, but I’m taking my son to Cracker Barrel for his birthday. Sure hope they have that fire going!!
Mavis Butterfield says
The tamales were a Christmas gift and they came from Texas Tamale company. 🙂
