Doesn’t everyone eat have pizza for dinner the first night in their new place? Well, that or take out. I don’t think we’ve had take out chicken teriyaki and rice since since we left Gig Harbor. Not once.
Market Basket $48.16
Wild Mike’s pizza though, it was pretty good. The HH went grocery shopping after dropping off the U-Haul and didn’t deviate from the list. I was impressed. He must have been tired or something. What’s missing from this picture?
A neighbor brought over a homemade cherry pie. {How nice was that!?} The HH went to the door though because it was just before 6 pm and I was already in my pajamas and that’s not how you want to meet someone for the first time. I did meet her the next day though when I was out in the yard with the fence guy and the first thing she said was “I like your glasses”…. so clearly she’s got style. 😉
Hannaford $152.35
I went to the local grocery store, Hannaford’s for rations {a platter of pickety bits had been high on my list of things to buy} and ended up just throwing whatever sounded quick and easy in the cart. Which apparently meant 6 pints of ice cream. I couldn’t find a single box of Good N’ Plenty or Red Vines in the store. What is it with Red Vines here? It’s like New Englander’s will only allow Twizzlers in their doors or something {which by the way are totally gross because they taste like sticks of plastic}.
Something tells me Hannaford isn’t the the most inexpensive joint in town. Then again, it could have been all the ice cream and cheese I tossed in the cart. I think when you move, you’re allowed a week or two of food splurges.
If you like banana pudding, you’ve got to hunt down a carton of Steve’s Ice Cream Southern Banana Pudding. Crushed vanilla wafers in a creamy banana ice cream….it’s divine.
The Girl turned 24! And yes, she came with us. And I’m pretty sure she’s not leaving until she has the funds to pay for an ENTIRE house. That kid. She likes her job, and is able to commute so you know, why bother getting a place of your own when you can just live with your parents and save, save save? We’ve been trying to get Monkey Boy to move out here but he’s having too much fun with his friends and wants to stay put.
To celebrate moving to a new home, we went on a real date. Like, a REAL one with cloth napkins and bread and butter before the meal. 😉 Totally not Cracker Barrel!!! I couldn’t believe it.
Happiness is finding the Crock Pot.
And making a delicious Mississippi Pot Roast pot pie the next night.
And last but not least, the Sunday night pickety bits feast. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Oh how I’ve missed them.
It was a good week, with lot’s of yummy food. Next week though, I have a feeling the HH will have found the BBQ and we’ll be back to weenies and grilled chicken.
Have a great day everyone,
~Mavis

So missed Hannaford when we moved from Maine. When we relocated, again, was so happy to find a Hannaford. Missed their Canadian food [Dare cookies come to mind first.] And yes, they’re not the least expensive around, but then price isn’t the only reason to shop somewhere.
dj_1973 says
I live in Maine, and mostly shop at Hannaford. They have great quality. And their new “to-go” service is a HUGE time saver. I am north of Market Basket but lived in NH once, and miss it – it’s a great place to get your non-perishables. I’d still get my produce and meat at Hannaford (if I couldn’t get it locally). (I made two trips when I lived in NH.)

Mavis, I’ve been a long time follower and I’m happy to see you’re still adventuring. It didn’t seem as though you were very happy in your other home, and it seems you’ve turned a corner here. We are in the process of selling our current home and trying to find our forever home and man is it hard! Happy to see you happy again.
Jennifer says
Mavis, was wondering something. Can you tell the story behind how the girl and boy got their nicknames? I’ve been reading your blog for sometime and they’ve always been called that.
Or, does someone else know? Maybe one of your readers? I’m curious about the backstory.
Thanks! Congratulations on your new house. Wish I had your adventurous spirit.
Richelle says
I’ve always wondered about HH, as well. Thought maybe there was story behind the nickname, maybe back in the early days of the blog
Carolina Cooper says
HH refers to Handsome Husband
Richelle says
Yes, I know the meaning. I was wondering how it came about.
Adeline says
Hi Mavis ! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and I must say I’m fascinated by all your blog posts about food ! I’m french, I live in Brittany, France with my partner and our dog. Even though american food is quite popular around the world, pretty much everything you buy, cook and eat seems exotic to me. It’s always a delight to read your grocery shopping recaps and to compare them with our own ! So please, keep sharing, in the name of diversity . Greeting from France !
Karen says
Hi Adeline,
We live in Lorraine and will be visiting Bretagne soon, one of our favorite places.
Enjoy cooking your American and French foods.

Glad to see that you still have a Market Basket near your new home. And, yes, Hannaford is NOT the least expensive place to shop. My son and his family live in Maine, near the NH border, so they shop in NH where there is no tax no groceries (or anything else, except for real estate.) If you are close to the border, you may want to try that. In my town, we have Market Basket, Hannaford and (oh, yes) Aldi.
What’s missing in the grocery haul pix? The HHs many boxes of cold cereal!!! Guessing he was, as you said, tired when he shopped. Or was he just trying to economize?
Heather C says
The HH went to Market Basket and I don’t see any cereal on that table?
Mavis Butterfield says
Ha! That is funny funny.
MelissainVic says
Congrats on the big move! I love an adventure, and I don’t believe in forever homes – just the home you’re living in right now. Life’s short!
Melissa says
Our girl just turned 24, too. She’s doing the same thing—living with us & saving up for a whole house.
Stephanie in Utah says
Red Vines all the way! Twizzlers shouldn’t even be considered licorice in my opinion, the taste and texture is just so different, and yes, plastic-like!
Teri says
Sounds like you’ve already found a good neighbor.
Happy Birthday to the girl!
Jamie B. says
Congrats on the new house! I think Hannaford is the medium priced grocery store for New England. Shaws seems more expensive to me.
Kerri says
MB is still cheapest. Hole you are still nearish to one. Hannafords used to be much cheaper and good produce but they have changed a lot. Its not my favorite.
Jeni says
Red Vines taste too much like red dye to us, but neither do we eat Twizzlers(no flavor and weird texture).
Hope your husband gets his cereal fix soon 🙂
Traci says
I LOVE strawberry Twizzlers, despite the weird texture!
Sandyf says
I hope to see you hanging “kissing balls” on your front porch as soon as the holidays and snow arrive. I’ve never seen them anywhere but Maine and fell in love with them.
Terri says
Twizzlers are a Hershey product and Hershey PA isn’t far from you.
Red Vines vs Twizzlers definitely has a geographical preference.
NW is definitely Red Vine territory
Y says
God love anyone who shows up at a new neighbor’s door with a fresh homemade berry pie. Seriously!
Rita says
The fence guy? I thought your HH always built the fences at your homes!!! You already sound happier for some reason. Can’t wait to see some photos of your new home/yard. Will you be getting chickens?
Tricia says
Mainah here (sadly, not living there at the moment)….Hannaford may not be the cheapest, but they have great sales!! And there are items specific to New England, which I really miss. Not sure where you are in Maine, but Save A Lot is a great option for stock up prices.
Becca Gordon says
I am intrigued by your Mississippi Pot Roast Pot Pie variation (it looks so good in the photo). Any chance the recipe for it will be posted in the near future after you get settled? This would be perfect comfort food as Fall settles in here in the Inland Empire.

First – Happy 24th Birthday to your daughter! I have been following you since the good old couponing days and the last couple years my life changed and blog reading went by the wayside. (I LOVE your recipes, especially jams and such but don’t have the time in this season of my life)…BUT…as I was reading your post and came across the bday cake picture and read that your daughter has been joining you on the East Coast, tears pricked my eyes! I remember reading posts about you making a zillion food items for events while she was in school and hoping I could be “that mom” some day!! Now that I have 2 girls, I hope I can be “that mom” and they stay close to home as they grow 🙂
Second – Thank you for always being so transparent and fun to read!
Third – Your chocolate chip cookie recipe is still my ALL TIME FAVORITE and I just looked it up the other day to make a batch for a friend 🙂
