Hello Monday!
What a crazy week it was with all sorts painting and gardening projects plus plowing through the giant stack of boxes {I think we have unpacked about 80% of them so far} and finding a place for things.
It wasn’t a spectacular week for sit down meals, more grab and go than anything else but things are starting to settle down and we are beginning to find our groove here. If I can stay on track, hopefully I’ll be able to make a few meals in the crock pot this week.
Temperatures are predicted to be in the 50-60 degree range and in my book, that’s soup and bread weather.
Speaking of bread, I am LOVING being able to walk to one of my favorite bakeries for a morning pastry or two. Last night, OHAM reader Julia commented “I don’t understand how you can run a half-marathon without already being a runner who regularly gets out there. Are you planning to walk it? I ran my first 3K this year and it about killed me. I have since stopped running and stick to walking.”
Julia’s comment made me smile.
Because JULIA, I AM TRAINING…. I am fast walking to the bakery every chance I get. 🙂 Granted, I should probably pick up the pace and start walking to the beach everyday because the half marathon is only a month away… But it’s not like I’m really concerned about my time, I just want to finish, and I’m not a runner, more of a fast walk like a weirdo for 7 minutes and run for 1 minute kind of person.
My running days {high school} are over. I just want the treats at the end of the finish line.
Beans and rice, rice and beans. 2 days in a row. Yum. Yum.
Hannaford $22.78
Grapes were $1.49 a pound, avocados $0.99 each, almond juice $2.49 each. Ice cream… not exactly on sale but SO GOOD for you because it has milk and eggs in it.
Of all the things that could have fallen off the moving truck but didn’t…
I couldn’t come up with a better side dish so I made a giant pot of rice in the rice cooker. {One of the best inventions ever if you ask me}.
Also, I may have burnt the leftover meat the next night when I made beans and weenies because I got distracted and forgot to add water to the pot and cooked it too long. Last minute gardening in the fall will do that to a person. 😉
We still ate it though. Some, more enthusiastically than others {Me! Because I didn’t want to make anything else}.
Ahhh Monday, you’re here. And you look BEAUTIFUL.
Have a great day everyone, and try and stay out of trouble.
~Mavis and Lucy

What bakery I get to Maine now and then I love to visit the ones you have been to.

Yay for you hitting the ground running!! Have you seen the method of using a battery operated drill with a long bit to plant bulbs quickly? What a wonderful life you’ve given Lucy!

Wow on the move and all the changes! Am looking forward to seeing pictures of your house and rooms soon I hope! I loved your other house but it was a lot of work. Sounds like this place is going to be easier with more time for fun!
Jeanine says
Hopefully you have a space for all your wool and hooking supplies. And a bedroom for the girl! Glad your new digs are going to be easier to manage. It was like you were a slave to the garden at your other home, not being able to enjoy it. Do you have enough room for a smaller garden and not any ticks? Also, can you have some chickens in your neighborhood? I look for your blog every morning. You are the “Adventure Girl” that is for sure….love it!

I am just about ready to lick my computer monitor…I NEED to know where that slice of heaven is located in the bakery box. Seriously.
I’m from MN, but will be traveling to New England next weekend. On the agenda is RI, NY, VT, NH, and ME. We have things sorted for every state but ME, any suggestions for a short day trip?
Beth says
Ohh….I second this as we are from IL and leaving for New England on Sat. We have CT, VT, NH, RI, MA, and ME on the schedule. Would love to know if that bakery is anywhere near Portland, ME area….

I don’t know where Mavis’s favorite bakery is but you can’t go to Maine without visiting The Holy Donut in Portland! The very best donuts ever!!
Julie says
IKR? I just want to know what that slice was, I’m ready to start searching recipes.
Emily B. says
Honestly….I need to have that in my pie hole as soon as possible. I can’t tell if it’s a cookie / brownie / cheesecake/ cake thing. It just looks amazing!

It looks like Lucy loves walking on the beach and the breakwater!!
Susan says
I love living near the beach! I’m not within walking distance anymore but easy driving distance. About 10 miles. My son lives in NE now and I was blown away when he told me you have to pay to go to the beach there. What’s up with that? Must be an east coast thing. Do you have to pay in Maine? Maybe the off season is free? Inquiring minds….
Joely says
I live near the beach in New England. They only charge in season so after Labor Day it is free. As a resident you can buy an annual pass which is very reasonable compared to the daily rate in season.

It is nice to see that you are happy again Mavis. The last couple of months, everything seemed to be a drag. Looking forward to seeing and hearing about your projects.
Maryellen says
Do you share your rice and beans recipe? 😀
CherylV says
Lucy has more miles under her belt than I have under mine!
Julia Park Tracey says
Ha ha ha….I love your running method! That’s a long walk, even so. I wish you speed and no sore feet. I love that you live near the beach. I lived on an island (Alameda CA) for about 16 years and loved being able to walk on the beach. It’s gorgeous in all your photos. Isn’t this change from summer to fall just delicious?

I would have hated to live with all the bugs in your previous property, but I have some questions that you may or may not want to answer, but here goes.
a) So how far (straight line is fine) is it between your old property and your new house? I guess I never thought about a wooded area with snakes, bugs, wild turkeys, etc,etc being really close to the ocean especially back east (I am a west coast girl). I always think the east coast is way more crowded so that this wouldn’t be possible.
b) What is the general population of where you were/are living? Like I said before I always think the population is huge back there, but reading your posts lately makes me think that is not true.
c) In comparison to the PNW area how expensive is a house in the areas you have lived recently?
And totally off the wall question: How did you get your husband convinced to make dinners now?? I am so tired of figuring out what we are going to eat and then making it. I would love to learn your secret 🙂
Libby says
Hi Heather – I live in CT which is more heavily populated than Maine, where Mavis is. I live in a coastal town and my house is 10 minutes from the water. We have wild turkeys, deer, BEARS, raccoons, foxes, and lots of rabbits in our neighborhood. You can also hear coyotes howling sometimes especially in the winter. Most houses in my neighborhood are on .33 acre lots, so relatively close together. People have to take down bird feeders in early spring as bears find them and eat them. Hostas are generally munched down to the ground by the deer.
From Boston to Washington DC – about 7 hours by car if no traffic (ha! that will never happen) is the most densely populated section of our country. What’s amazing is to drive it and see just how much green space there really is.

Does your beans & rice recipe (as pictured) contain meat? Look delicious (and meatless): what I am looking for! I searched your blog recipes but found only recipes that contained meat . . .
Mavis Butterfield says
Sometimes I use this recipe but substitute the lentils and red beans for black beans and a little corn. https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/creamy-spiced-red-beans-and-lentils/

Thanks! Will try!

I’ve heard ALL about an apple cider donut. Can they be found here, and are the good?
Karina says
Ice cream was on sale here in Vermont! I got a pint of Steve’s for FREE with the store app and Ben & Jerry’s was $2.50 (I refrained, not enough room in the fridge, we still haven’t moved our big freezer to our new house, it’s been almost a year!) I can’t believe you voluntarily moved again! You must be well-practiced by now.
