So. My husband drove all the way to Market Basket yesterday. ALL THE WAY with a big list I had written out {in order of the layout of the store thank you very much}. And what did he come home with? NOTHING.
N O T H I N G
He said he had to park at the end of the lot, and that when he got in to the store the LINES WERE TOO LONG and that people were fighting over carts {oh please}. And then he mumbled something about it probably being a fire code violation or something and that he just couldn’t handle it and and left. EMPTY HANDED. No milk. No Good N’ Plenty. Nada. Zilch. Nothing.
Seriously. Who does that?
Personally, I think it was a planned out deal because today we are supposed to be working on the fence. Stalling tactics. That’s what’s going on here.
Loaf of the Week: Sourdough {the big one} $7.00
I think we may have had a sandwich everyday for lunch last week.
PB & J. I could eat it everyday.
The HH tried out a new creamy soup recipe and oh my word it was not only delicious, but holy cow man, we were eating it for three days straight because it made such a big pot. I’ll share the recipe tomorrow because this is one soup you are going to want in your meal rotation this winter.
Each time we sat down for another bowl, we raved about how the soup was a 10 out of a 10 and that there was no way possible it could have been perfected. Seriously, it was that good.
Chicky pot pie. We still have leftovers in the fridge.
And last but not least, two plates filled with pickety bits. The Girl, I think she has a knack for it. 😉
Ahhh Monday. Let’s do this. And let’s hope we get at least 25 ft of fence up today. {Although I’m hoping we can do more}.

I have had that same feeling with Market Basket on a Sunday, but now I have learned the secret to not feeling overwhelmed at shopping at the best and cheapest store around. I asked the management when is the least crowded and therefore best time to shop. Bingo! They open at 7 am and I was told that 7 to 8:30 am is the very least crowded time to shop, so I try to go in that time frame. Also, not crowded between 8-9 pm when they close. Was it also raining when he got there? Rain and snow seem to bring shoppers out in droves.Lots of leaves on the ground today and they are wet. But no rain so I hope you get LOTS of fence up. And send that man back to Market Basket–Monday is always a relatively slow day.

And DO NOT go there first day of the month … Social security and food stamps hit
E in Upstate NY says
Can’t speak for food stamps, but Social Security pay out is rolling, based upon your birthdate. I receive mine in the middle of the month.
Pat says
Just an FYI. All SS deposits are not in the first. They are sent a specific day and week of the month depending on the first letter if your last name. I’m sure if the were all sent on the first it would break the system 🙂

Market Basket on a Sunday is INSANE!
Karen says
What? You have stores open on Sunday? We don’t, not always allowed here in Europe. It keeps Sunday, Sunday, that is, quiet and contemplative, family activities, no lawnmowers, no shopping.
Give it a try, you will de-stress.

Sadly, they rolled back the “Blue Laws” that kept things closed on Sundays in most parts of New England back in the early 1990s – it was related to Wal-Mart pushing to come into the area. So you can do most of your shopping on Sundays now. (I personally miss the blue laws – it was a lot more restful. And our little corner stores made some cash off sales to those who ran out of bread and milk.)
Nancy Sadewater says
I agree with dj_1973 that I miss the “Blue Laws” too. I rarely shop on a Sunday (only when something can not wait until after I am off of work on Monday afternoons and NEVER on holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, New Years Day, Labor Day and Memorial Day).

They’re open in England on Sunday

My favorite time to grocery shop is Saturday night – the stores are usually ghost towns.
Lynda says
Ny Saturday night here, the shelves are half empty.. they don’t restock that day….

When I was working with a long commute, I had no choice but to shop on the weekends, but since I retired, I avoid food stores and the big box stores on the weekend. If you give the HH an hour or so off from fencing today, he’ll be able to do that big shop for you, no fighting for carts.
I’m so glad someone else appreciates the wonders of a good PB&J sandwich!

No good ‘n plenty???? Seriously???

I’ve really been missing seeing photos of you, Mavis! And Lucy! Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE your blog. I look forward to it every single morning. It’s just that I would like to see you include more photos of you and Lucy.

My friend told me when she was single, that the best place to meet men was on the frozen food aisles on a Saturday night….

Was some bad weather in the forecast? Did that nor’easter ever hit where you’re at?

We grocery shop Friday night, which is usually reasonably quiet at the stores, but I’m pretty tired at that point in the week. The farmers markets also aren’t open until Saturday around here, so it was really hard to plan ahead on produce. But, we just joined a CSA that delivers on Fridays, and it’s been amazing. I get to check what local produce was sent to us before I head to the store, so it’s much easier to plan. I also realized I’d talk myself out of produce I was too tired to cook in the moment, even though I’d be game to cook those things later in the week, so it’s nice to have it just show up each week.
This past week I used up 36 lbs of the 100 lbs of apples we picked making applesauce and apple cider, and I used an additional 10 lbs or so making individual mini pies for the students I work with. One promptly dropped his pie on the ground, splattering it everywhere, so I’m making a replacement pie for him tonight.

If there’s a Patriots game on Sunday and you’re at the store before game start, the store is guaranteed to be an extra crazy zoo.
dj_1973 says
If you shop DURING the Pats game, though, you get in and out super fast! (Not a football fan…)
Traci says
One Sunday afternoon I was doing some shopping and everywhere was an absolute ghost town. I finally found out the reason while at a Best Buy and the employees were watching the Super Bowl on tv – I had no idea it was even that day! Obviously not a football fan either, and it was even when the Broncos were playing & I lived in Denver!

I’m fairly new to this site, but enjoy it very much. I am especially interested in what you spend monthly on groceries. Is there something you do that I don’t know about because I live in Nevada and I spend 400-500 a month on groceries for 2 people. I buy bulk, on sale, not a lot do processed stuff. I need to know your secret for saving so much.
