After my quick trip to Washington and eating everything in sight, this past week was rather boring. It’s funny how travelling, even if for just a few days can put your body totally out of whack. I took the red eye on Sunday night and arrived early Monday morning, got home and slept until 2 pm and then went to bed early that night.
Friday I went to bed at 7 and Saturday I went to bed at 6 and didn’t get up until until 6 the next morning. So, I guess I was tired? I don’t know, but so far today is off to a good start and if everything goes as planned, I’ll have 3 roman shades sewn before the sun goes down. So here’s to Mondays, and positive thinking.
Dinner on a tray. Homemade tomato soup with homemade croutons and a grilled cheese sammy. Note to self: re-stain tray.
Date day.
Totally boring. But I didn’t have to cook, so I’m not complaining.
Huge slice of Focaccia bread {pesto and cherry tomatoes} from the local bakery. $3.50 We split it in two and had it for dinner.
Market Basket $78.01
The pomegranate juice was 10% of the bill!
A batch of biscotti. I’ll share the recipe tomorrow.
Homemade chicken and white bean soup. With jalapeno bread from the bakery {$3.00}.
Another round of Copycat Panera Cream of Chicken and Wild Rice Soup. We put half of the soup in the freezer this time. I’ll let you know how it fares in a week or two. {I always worry about milk based soups, but this is one soup I would LOVE to be able to make ahead and stock the freezer with}.
My new favorite frozen pizza brand, Wild Mike’s Pizza. It comes with 2 spice packets inside… Use them! They give the pizza a nice kick. Also, take a look at the shirt my husband is wearing. And then scroll back up to the top of this post and then back down again.
Did you do it? Did you count how many times he is wearing the same flannel shirt? THREE.
Do you remember the movie Mr. Mom? And how the husband, who became a stay at home dad started to wear the same clothes everyday and watch soap operas. And how he dealt with all the repair people, did all the grocery shopping {cough} made grilled cheese sandwiches and put dinner on the table every night {cough, cough} and totally cleaned the house {okay, so we’re not entirely there yet}. Well, that is who my husband has become. And it’s hilarious.
I just wanted to give all you wives out there who have been taking care of your husbands all these years some hope that one day, the tide will change and your husband will finally figure out where you keep the plates and how to use the dishwasher, and that you will be the one being taken care of.
Life. It has a funny way of working itself out.
Monday. Let’s do this! 😉

Thank you for this spark of hope with husbands. Mine has taken on Sundays as his day to cook. He does an amazing job, has learned where I keep most things, and each week asks just a few less questions. I still do the dishes, but maybe he’ll take an interest in this with time. It gives me hope, though, that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe upon retirement he’ll be chief cook and bottle washer. It’s also nice that I can now leave town on occasion and know that my kids will have more than ramen to eat.

Well you do live in Maine. The land of flannel! Our son told us that men in Maine wear flannel shirts every single day so we were in Florida and spotted a car with Maine tags and sped up to look at the driver and sure enough–flannel shirt! Sam’s has Eddie Bauer flannel shirts for $14.98 right now so time to buy some more! My Hubby is vacuuming as I type! He has become my hero!

Is the HH doing laundry too hence the repeat of the flannel shirt? 🙂

Yes. 😉

When I was first married a friend gave me advice….She said always eat what ever your husband cooks for you and never discourage his efforts. It turned out to be good advice, I lived thru dinners of hot dogs and Kraft dinner and now he has learned to cook very well. He has taken over the grocery shopping and is proud to tell me his sales and coupon deals, he does not of the housework too….I am blessed!
Judy says
oops, should read…most of the housework

The one time my husband “cooked” I came home from an appointment and he and our child were eating raw inside chicken. I took it away and said you can’t eat under cooked chicken. His reply was he likes his meat rare! I had left directions on how to cook and how long. He usually cooks things on high so it is brown on the outside and rare in the middle.

Thanks for the glimmer of hope. Husband says he cannot unload the dishwasher because he doesn’t know where things go. Like I rearrange the kitchen cupboards every week?
Nanci L Brand says
Mine will unload the dishwasher, but ends up leaving stuff on the counter that he claims to not know where they go. Funny thing is, he never has a problem finding a bowl when he wants ice cream…LOL Men!

I wonder if your body finally decided it was settled in to the new house, had taken care of the “winter is coming” chores and it was finally time for some much needed rest. You’ve been working so hard since the move.
Also – about the tray. What about staining the sides and then trying your hand at painting the flat part to look like one of your hooked rugs – or maybe a grey whale (en homage to Washington state). You have so many cute patterns. You could use ship varnish to protect the surface – – might be fun

With the grocery haul, it looks like you are going to make the jello, crushed pineapple and cranberry sauce salad! I made it for the church potluck yesterday and am going to make it again for the garden club party. Everyone loves it!

Around here, we call the HH’s clothing his uniform and I mean the neighbors and our friends too, not just me. He’s got a going to the hardware store or Safeway outfit, a going out outfit, etc. It’s weird.

My husband retired 3 1/2 yrs before I did. He played 18 holes of golf, went to the grocery store, & kept the house cleaner than I ever did. He would pick me up at lunch & we would go to Luby’s to eat so I wouldn’t have to cook at night. He was a keeper that’s for sure. We were married 56 yrs..miss him so much….I was so blessed.

You must have needed the down time after flying coast to coast and back! Funny though, at first I thought it was you in the flannel shirt. Haha:)

Me too!
