I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped by Albertsons this week.
Because of manager markdowns I was able to pick up bacon for $0.99 a pound, day old croissants for $0.99 and two packages of beef for about $5 thanks to $2 off and Buy 1 get 1 free stickers. 🙂 Manager markdowns are cool!
This past week I was able to pop into the grocery stores all in one day while I was out running errands. I think having our milk delivered is really going to help me cut down on my trips to the market this year. So far so good.
Real food costs money.
My parents gave me a big fat gift card to Panera for Christmas and I plan on getting my bread there until the card runs dry. I love that place.
I was next store picking of Lucy some dog treats and decided to run in a grab a whole chicken for dinner. I spotted vanilla bean yogurt marked down so I grabbed a few for Monkey Boy.
I had some Vitacost credit so I ordered a few treats. Have you ever tried Mc Canns Irish Oatmeal before? Talk about a breakfast that will stick to your ribs. It’s the HH’s favorite. I also picked up The Girl’s favorite Irish Tea, Bob’s Irish Soda Bread and some toaster pastries for my son {who eats them untoasted {barf!}.
Well that’s what I purchased this past week, how about you? Did you buy anything exciting?

I’m curious, is it providing to be a tad more difficult since your break up with Mr. Produce man? Are you going to be growing more in your garden this year to compensate for the loss of food?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, I think it is going to be harder since the breakup and I think it will be interesting to see how much we end up growing this year. Clearly I can’t grow things like bananas, mangos and avocados but I can sure grow a lot of other stuff.
Krista S says
The bananas and mango i see but why not avocado’s? we have avocado trees but maybe its the climate difference since im in California? For most types you do need 2 of them however and it does take several years to establish but I think it could be done at some point.
Also for really good deals on stuff like bananas avocado and mango try looking for hispanic markets, idk if they have them that far north however, again the joys of being in California, we get avocados here anywhere from 4 for $1 to 50 cents each and they are usually good sized ones as well, bananas are around 50 cents lb for non over ripe ones, and about 20 cents a pound for the ripe ones perfect for breads and muffins, the mango are usually 2 for $1 or 1$ each, now im curious of the prices of those items in your area, lol and hungry for a mango now too…
Mavis Butterfield says
I think mangos are typically $2.99, on sale $1. Avocados run anywhere from $0.50 to $2. 🙂

Me, too!! 🙂

They are one of my favorite things about the grocery store!! (especially in the bakery!)
I’ve never seen a bacon marked down so low…. amazing find!

My Albertson’s always has meat “manager’s specials.” Usually they are Buy One Get Two. Great deal? Not on the chicken. It is 3 halves, seasoned, and the boniest chicken I have ever seen. Barely any meat, and what there was didn’t taste fresh at all. I wonder if they take the near expiration date meats, season them (yours isn’t seasoned, my store’s always are, chicken, pork, or beef) and put them on sale?
I actually threw out 6 half chickens! I suppose I could have taken them back, but my time and gas (the store is a couple towns over) are worth more.
Are the 4 cartons of milk for one week? Your family doesn’t drink much milk then! I buy 3 of the gallon jugs during my weekly shopping, then have to get more mid-week.

Wow! And to think I thought I scored when I found our bacon marked down to $2.49# at Albertsons. LOL
Mavis Butterfield says
The bacon was one day away from being “expired” that’s why it was only $0.99. I stick it in the freezer. 🙂

Mavis,
As usual you did great! I spent $19 on Bountiful Basket which I picked up on Saturday morning- this basket will be a bit more challenging than usual because I got brussel sprouts (my husband thinks they are green poison), an acorn squash (he won’t eat that either) and 4 artichokes (another thing he won’t eat)- I also got 4 avocados, a small container of grape tomatoes, 5 russet potatoes, a head of romaine lettuce, kiwis, oranges, bananas, and apples. I spent $25,00 at Fred Meyer and got a couple of frozen pizzas for my teenager and ice cream and some necessities such as milk and half and half. I also bought pork chops and chicken at Albertsons this week and spent approximately $15.00. My total for last week was $59.00- not bad for our household of 3 people.
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope, not bad and teens love pizza, that’s for sure!
Martha says
Beth, use your blender!!! Cook up the brussel sprouts and the acorn squash and blend them. Then you can put them in your lasagna/spaghetti sauce, creamed soups, etc. I do it all the time and my family can’t tell. Well, maybe they can taste the brussel sprouts, but they can’t really see them, so they can’t complain! 🙂

I remember milk delivery! Just barely though. We had a local dairy that would deliver once a week, when I was a kid. Unfortunately they stopped a little more then twenty years ago, and there is no one in my area that delivers any longer. We’ve got to make the trips to the store. Although I’ve since grown up and mine is just a two person household, and my HH doesn’t drink milk, I don’t have to buy much of it.

Great Mavis! In the Sunday paper were .75/1 any Essential Everyday products. That would have made your bacon .24!! Coupons are still fun!

Great finds! Do you know what time of day the supermarket usually marks down meat, dairy, etc? Is it early morning, late evening? I tend to do my grocery shopping right after work so around 5-6 pm and never see any mark downs…wondering if other shoppers beat me to them or they haven’t been marked down for the day :-/

What happened to the free produce?
Barbara says
Our two supermarkets, Winn Dixie and Publix, both do a weekly BOGO (buy one, get one free), and now Wal-Mart has announced that if you bring in the ad from either of the two stores, they will honor the same deal. That makes me deliriously happy. All three stores are within a short distance of each other on the same street, so it is easy to stop in at each one. One has the best meat, the other great produce, and the third has great prices on everything else, but their meat and produce are lousy. Albertsons closed a few years ago. They were the highest priced one in town.
