Getting your milk delivered is RAD people, totally RAD. Shuffling outside in 40 degree weather at 8am in your pj’s to collect groceries off your porch is the best thing ever.

I sent The Girl to the store for lunch supplies and this is what she came back with. Had I sent Monkey Boy we would have had a totally different picture. 😉
About those eggs. Remember last month when I told you how we thinned our flock of chickens? Well apparently we gave away our best egg layers. Which wouldn’t have been a problem if Lucy the Puggle Dog hadn’t suddenly developed a 2 egg a day habit. Yep, that sweet little pup has us wrapped around her little paw and I now find myself scrambling her up 2 eggs every morning for breakfast.
Hopefully once the days get a little longer all the chickens will start laying again. But until then, I might have to buy Lucy a carton of eggs every once in a while.
Panera – Free {Thanks to a Panera gift card my parents gave me for Christmas}
The savages got to it before I could take a picture.
Last week I pulled up a few baby parsnips and carrots for a hearty soup.
That’s it. That’s all I bought. Obviously it wasn’t a stock up on anything kind of week. But that’s the beauty of waiting for a good deal I guess.
How is YOUR grocery budget doing this month?

Mavis – I thought you might be interested in a story I saw on NBC news yesterday about how a former Trader Joe’s Exec is going to open a new store called Daily Table that will sell only expired and past prime food. If you google news “expired foods grocery store” the NBCNews link should pop up for you. I’m curious what you think – especially in light of what we have learned from you and Mr. Produce Guy about what often gets tossed. I hope you enjoy –

I saw that too and think it is a cool idea.

Now, I only mention this because you have commented on Lucy and her lack of manners… why is she on the kitchen/dining table?
Mavis Butterfield says
🙂 Inspecting the goods of course.

I had a chuckle when I saw that picture. One of our dogs will do that when we aren’t looking if we don’t push the chairs fully under the table. Drives me nuts.
Mavis~ Does Lucy shed at all? We have an english bulldog that sheds like crazy and when we consistently give her egg yoke her coat gets shiny and her shedding slows. Pretty awesome. I haven’t resorted to scrambling her eggs but never say never!
Mavis Butterfield says
She doesn’t shed too bad now. The HH brushes her out once a week.

My husband brushes our two German Shepherds daily and I still can’t keep ahead of the dog hair. Count yourself lucky!

40 degrees is balmy. We wear shorts and go without jackets in that. Try -20 with a wind chill.

Eeek!

I have just the opposite egg problem – I’m collecting 15-20 a day! Would love to find someone who wants to trade fresh milk for eggs………………..:)

Mavis –
Just have a quick question – Recently (in January 2014) you posted receiving your seed order for this year, however, in your “totals” it shows you not spending anything.
The reason I am asking is that I am so in awe over the amount at which you spend to feed your family and have been trying to also reduce the cost at which I feed mine. I know for me, seeds and transplants for the garden can add up quickly and from your photos you have ALOT of new seed packets.
So, I don’t know if this was just an oversite that the total reflects zero; or – you have “blessing angels” that supply your seeds; or – somehow I have just missed something . . .
Anyway, just trying to learn from your web info that I truly enjoy reading and learning from.
Thanks – Deb

Hi Deb, Botanical Interests is sponsoring my garden again this year. 🙂 They did last year as well. Even though I get my seeds for free, I typically spend about $700-$900 on my garden every year buying things like soil, compost, slug killer, building supplies and little odds and ends. Once I purchase something this year I will start adding it to my total. 🙂

Hi Mavis.. Re the eggs you are giving to Lucy. Have you run this buy your vet? Its a heck of a lot of fat to be giving a small dog on a regular basis. I am sure vets say one to two eggs a week even for a large dog. She is so cute and I suspect demanding and it is so easy to kill them with kindness. My wee girl has to have a completely no fat diet. Try cooking rice in some home made, salt and onion less chicken stock, add grated carrot and cottage cheese and offer her this instead. You can put morsels of meat in this but just a taste. You could even stir in a raw egg if u have too. I make up a batch of this then freeze it (minus the eggs) and Maddy loves it.

Mavis,
I would LOVE to win the Zuke’s treats. I am familiar with the Zukes tiny bites (or whatever they are called). My dogs, Libby, Tuck and Andy love them. I am a dog trainer who uses predominantly positive reinforcement. Since my dogs are food driven, this usually means little tiny bits of food. I usually use “people” food e.g. chicken, cheese, microwaved chicken dogs, or whatever meat has gotten freezer burned. (oops!) But there are times when I need something that is non-perishable. When those times happen, I like the Zukes. I also have the neatest contraption called a Manners Minder (actually mine is the first iteration Treat ‘n Train), and the Zukes work great in it. This is a remote controlled treat dispensing device. I call mine Sam. Libby worships Sam. LOL!
I really like your blog and have gained numerous great ideas from it though I am nowhere near your goal. I’m still spending upward of $100.00/WEEK! at the store, but I’m trying. (Having said that, I include all stuff bought at the store such as air filters, laundry detergent, cat treats, oh, and wine. That’s expensive.)
Even if I don’t win, thanks for giving me the kick in the a** to send you a note saying how much I like your blog. It is one of two that I follow and brings joy to my life.

Next time you cut back on your chickens – you might want to consider freezing eggs for your dog (and you) before you butcher. I didn’t want to haul water in the winter to my chickens which were also showing signs of slowing egg productions – so I decided that I would start with a whole new set in the spring – but before I butchered – I froze about 20 dozen of eggs (breaking them out of their shells first and into baggies which were stored in used milk cartons in the freezer. I’m using them now – not only for dog food – but also for baking and other uses. They seem to work pretty well – except I think they need to invent something besides baggies to put them in.

I read a suggestion somewhere that mentioned ice trays. I’ve never tried I but I freeze all sorts of things (baby food, tomato paste) in ice trays and then pop them out and store in containers or ziplock bags

Whenever you ask advice on a particular subject (like Lucy not eating), I always wonder what you end up deciding, so I like that you said about “eggs for Lucy.” Spoiled pup 😉

Scrambled eggs, cooked chicken, baked sweet potatoes, yep, that dog has it rough. 🙂

We have an 8 year old yellow lab, Maggie. Just in this recent year she has developed food allergies. So we are always on the lookout for Special food and treats. These sound like they would be great for her. Besides being hard to find, they are expensive. I would love to give them a try.

My grocery bill has been extremely low because we have been eating out of the freezer and pantry since you posted the pics of how much food people throw away. I have discovered all kinds of things that have gotten shoved to the back (including a couple of pounds of yummy Charleston shrimp :). Thanks for posting it–it was a good reminder for me.
