I don’t know how it happened but I drove by Costco and it was calling my name. Seriously, does that every happen to you? Ha! Anywho, I splurged and loaded up on some tasty croissants, Kashi bars, Black Forest ham, eggs for Lucy the spoiled Puggle, bananas and a big bin of salad mix. Oh, and I almost forgot, MEYER LEMONS!!
With groceries like that, I almost feel normal.
Panera – Free with Christmas Gift Card
I can’t believe I haven’t spent it all on the you pick 2 tomato soup and tuna sandwich combo.
Fuji apples and avocados. Yum Yum.
No, I have not given up on getting our milk delivered. There was a snafu with my credit card. Maybe you heard, 10 gazillion people had their credit card info compromised and now everybody and their brother is getting a new credit card in the mail. Unfortunately I forgot to upload my new card to my milk order and had to run out and buy milk. BOOO!
Oh well, I’ll get the cool milk again next week.
How did you do spending wise this week? Buy any cool food for the Super Bowl?

Didn’t watch the Super Bowl at all. No network connections on my TV at home, so instead we watched the ‘mutant’ team. Watched all the X-MEN films. That way we KNOW the good guys are gonna win!

We bought a family size order of “Seahawk Chips” (blue and green tortilla chips) from Taco Time to be used for nachos and taco salad. I also made some snickerdoodles but rolled them in blue or green sprinkling sugars instead of cinnamon.

I didn’t buy anything special. I do have to say that your tracking of your grocery spending inspired me to start tracking my own this year. I’m so glad I did. I discovered that, in January, I almost spent double what I have budgeted for groceries. Holy wasteful spending! I’m so glad I tracked and am being much more diligent so far this month (even though it has only been a few days!) thanks so much for all your postings! I have gotten so much useful information and strategies out of your site!

Holy wasteful spending is right. I was shocked when I started tracking my spending too. Stick with it, you can reduce it. 🙂

I really don’t know how you do it! I spend your monthly budget in a week and there are only two of us! I don’t use coupons because they are for processed food, which I don’t buy. And anyway, when I was buying all that crap the store brand was usually cheaper than the coupon item. Another factor to consider in my grocery bill is I try to buy organic and local as much as possible and that stuff’s expensive. I do have a garden and I make the bread, condiments, freezer meals, etc, but just can’t seem to get the bill down.

What I do now is write out a Menu.. then go from there. I seem to be doing so much better doing it this way. I do get help from food stamps.. its only $109.00 a month, but my Monthly social security is just $712.00. I do pretty good, And since I plan on moving to Spokane,WA. at the end of the Month,, I now have to figure out what to buy for these next few weeks .. So I won’t have to throw away anything.
Tomorrow, I plan on going to Winco and just get a Pork Roast and Fixings for Taco’s, Roast one night, an a Pork with Hominy Stew one night… And hope that lasts me for at least 4 or 5 days.. Its just me, so I am not so worried…. Any suggestions would be Great…

I think you do a great job focusing on basic whole foods and spending so much less than most people. I’ve been tracking my spending (pretty much on everything) for a couple of years now, and it really helps to keep me aware of where we are and if we need to make do with what we have for a bit. Just under $150 for the year so far to feed four people is amazing.

I’m impressed you got out of Costco for only $37.
I’m so glad I don’t live really close to the one in our area, I never go by there. But when I do….$100 – easy.

Where have you been?

You are SO fortunate to have such a large garden – and the ability to make things grow. I know, I could grow a tomato in a pot, and maybe some herbs (I do have a thriving oregano), but as it is I have to buy virtually everything. Bummer.

Do you use more eggs than your chickens produce?
Mavis Butterfield says
Right now yes. Mostly because Lucy the Puggle dog has them for breakfast and we also gave our best egg layers away AND not all the chicks we picked up in the fall are producing yet. 🙁

There is a Panera cookbook out that contains some of their bread, sandwich and soup recipes. It might be worth checking out from your library. Panera also has a lot of recipes on their website including fresh tomato soup 🙂

I’m surprised that with your slightly new outlook on food and what you intake, that you still are doing $100 a month (or trying) for your size family. Buying local and organic is expensive and when you start looking into buying local and or organic meats….. ! Holy mother of Pete! That stuff is expensive enough to make you want to be a vegetarian.
Our family of 5 (all male minus myself) currently is doing 60% organic/local on $175-$200 every two weeks. But I’m slowly adding in organic meats so that will jump to at least $200-$300 every two weeks. Thank the big G for out organic co op and our sizable gardens.

I think it’s pretty amazing how little you really need to buy when you buy things like oatmeal, beans, rice and meat in bulk. And, having a big garden helps as well. I think so many peeps are trained in thinking breakfast = cereal when things like eggs and oatmeal are not only inexpensive, but better for you as well. I think spending $200 every 2 weeks on groceries is great! You can do it.

Do you shop Grocery Outlet? If not why the heck not? (I may have asked this before…but alas I forgot!)
