How To Freeze Peas
Yesterday the HH and I picked another round of Green Arrow shelling peas from the front garden. Have you tried growing your own peas? Oh my homegrown peas are delicious! I’ve been growing peas every year since we’ve had a garden.
Over the years I’ve grown sugar snap peas, snow peas, shelling peas and even sweet peas. But I think out of all the pea varieties I’ve grown, the Green Arrow variety is my favorite for their plump uniform size.
While we do love to snack on peas fresh from the garden, or in a pea salad with bacon and chives, or a Ranch pasta salad w/ broccoli, spinach and peas, my favorite thing to do with garden fresh peas is to freeze them for use during the winter months.
I don’t know why, but there is something truly satisfying abour freezing your own peas. I mean, a nice pot roast, mashed potatoes and peas is a winning combination on a cold winter’s day if you ask me.
Have you ever frozen fresh peas before? Holy crackers it’s easy. I took a few pictures of the process for you. 🙂
How to Freeze Peas
- Step #1 Shell peas. Place pods in compost pile.
- Step #2 Boil water.
- Step #3 Place fresh peas in boiling water for 1 – 2 minutes {until they turn bright green}.
- Step #4 Drain Peas. Place peas in ice water. Drain peas again.
- Step #5 Place peas on a cookie sheet and flash freeze for 1 -2 hours.
- Step #6 Place peas in labeled zip baggies and place in the freezer.
Dang, if only my fellow Pilgrims had freezers. Life would have been a little easier. 😉
So what have YOU been up to lately? Have you been freezing any of your garden goodness lately?

I skip the whole cookie sheet step and put them directly into bags once they’re drained the second time. Works just fine and saves a step:-).

I flash freeze but use wax paper to get them off the pan earlier 🙂

I love that your daughter is a Who fan! My peas are right behind yours. Good call on freezing. They are as easy as blueberries and if you have the freezer space they taste better. I’m going to use most of mine in curry dishes through the winter. Maybe pot pie too.

Our peas never make it into the house usually. We just stand outside at the plant and devour them. LOL

We’re totally the same way! We try but usually fail to get out of the garden with enough to add to a meal or preserve. LOL
I have 2 kids (currently 14 & 12) and, as a mom, it’s almost impossible for me to say “no! don’t eat those fresh veggies while you’re out in the yard playing” – hahaha. Not to mention I’m pretty guilty of eating them right out of the garden, too.

I am fond of the early June peas, myself. While I did not grow any this year, I have been busy the last few days dehydrating onions and carrots.

I haven’t grown any peas in several years, due to lack of space. Terracing is still a work in progress, it there will be a space for peas when it’s ready for planting. When our sons were young, and we had half the neighbourhood kids in our back garden, they knew they could pick peas and cherry tomatoes to snack on at any time. I always planted a few extra just for that.

Truly tastes like summer when you take your homegrown garden peas from the freezer on a cold winter day. Love them! We didn’t do well with ours this year- too much rain by us…

We love the sugar snap peas straight from the garden. No one in my family is a fan of cooked peas so I don’t grow any for freezing. I did, however, pick my first round of green beans tonight. I’ll be freezing them in the morning.
