This year my goal is to grow 2,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. I think I can do it. With 16 raised garden beds, a greenhouse, a raspberry patch and a few more planting beds sprinkled throughout our property, I believe growing 2,000 pounds of food is an attainable goal. Even if I do live right in the middle of high maintenance suburbia, and my neighbors think I’m nuts. ~Mavis

This was a busy week both at home and in the garden. I took a mini trip to Idaho, and as soon as I got back, The Girl and I went foraging for over 30+ pounds of plums, {we went back last night}. We also picked a few more baskets of wild blackberries, canned a boatload of jam and harvested almost 100 pounds of fruits and vegetables as well. Crazy!
For the most part, this was a transition week in the garden. We planted out broccoli and kale for the fall, and started to work on the greenhouse pallet gardens for this winter. Although there are plenty of things left yet to harvest, I am getting a little nervous about reaching my goal of trying to grow 2,000 pounds of fresh fruits and veggies in the garden. I sure hope all those potatoes, pumpkins and tomatoes are going to help. Otherwise I maybe growing tons and tons of lettuce and kale both indoors and out just to reach my goal. We shall see!

I’m curious how you handle your onions. Mine started to rot really quickly once harvested last year, so I did not grow those kind of onions again. I grew Egyptian Walking Onions instead. Did you dry the onions for a few weeks?
Sakura says
Wow, 695 pounds is really impressive. Keep growing girl!

That is funny! LOL

Hi Mavis!
Do you have any advice on protecting kale from cabbage worms? My crop has been destroyed a couple of times this season by the hungry caterpillars. Any tips would be so appreciated! 🙂
Thanks!

I made that KFC cole slaw and it really was just like the one there. We have no KFC in our area, but when we used to we would just get the cole slaw at times to go. We don’t eat meat, so don’t patronize them.
Normally I make my own cole slaw but it just never seemed right to me. I would add this , that …hmmm, not not right. But this recipe is perfect. Will be making a triple batch of it for Labor Day, have a 5 lb head cabbage waiting and ready.

What did you do with all of your plums? I picked 50 pounds off of 1 of our 2 trees and a lot of them went bad before we could eat them or dehydrate them.

How do you plan enough food for 1 person for each year?
I’m trying to calculate how to grow enough food and was wondering maybe you have some good resources on how to decide how many of each vegetable to grow and how to get good at succession plantings?
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Edward, this post should help you. https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/ask-mavis-garden-one-zaycon-questions-paying-mortgage/
