Confession time. 😉
The HH was gone all of last week on a business trip. He left on sunday morning and didn’t get home until late friday night. Saturday we slept in and then headed to Poulsbo for our “date day.” On sunday Monkey Boy and the HH went off to do “man stuff” and I worked on hooked rugs.
While he was away I totally slacked off in the food department. AND IT WAS AWESOME. Monkey Boy had to work all week so it was just me and the puggle princess. This is rare and usually only happens a few times a year so I took full advantage and hung out in my pj’s and ate/made a bunch of random stuff to eat. So even though this was our first week into a “no spend” month, it was easy peasy because all I really had to do was make sure there was dinner on the table when Monkey Boy walked through the door.
The only thing I’m really worried about is milk… and if I can ration the 3 gallons I started the month with without anyone noticing. Remember, I didn’t tell the boys I was doing this little challenge, because hello, they don’t even cook in the first place so why even put the idea in their head that we might run out of something. The HH doesn’t drink milk and Monkey Boy only does occasionally {I mostly use it in my tea and for baking} so I think I might be able to stretch it if I am careful. We’ll see.

Breakfast – Big breakfast: eggs, bacon, toast
Linner – Cilantro lime tacos at a restaurant

Breakfast – Eggs, sausages, asparagus, watermelon
Linner – Chicken stir fry with brown rice

I have been trying to follow this challenge along with you. My only exception was milk as I do a lot of baking and have a young one at home. I also don’t have a large freezer to store it. I am using powdered milk for the baking though. I am lucky that my garden is producing a little of things like kale and cabbage. This helps out a little. We also forage so I still have plenty of chickweed and dandelion greens, and dewberries will be ready soon. This is helping me clean out the pantry and freezer to get ready for the new harvest.

I was GIFTED a huge box of food (if added up, close to $100). Granted some was prepared things like canned pasta rings and mac n cheese but there was also baking mix you use water with to make biscuits and a MONTH worth of meat and veggies! Can we say freezer meal time because mine is quite small ( think apartment size fridge) and container meals fit better than packages of meat? A large gift to be sure and I will be sharing with the givers!

If you make up 1/2 gallon of powdered milk and mix it with half a gallon of the “real” milk you won’t even notice it. One of my friends did that when her kids were little and her son drank a gallon a day. He never knew the difference.

I’m just wondering how you eat your lentils and rice? I cook green lentils and fry lots of onions to make an approximation of Megadarra.

Well we came home to a bare freezer and fridge and I spent a ton at Costco to fill the freezer. That was last week.
THEN this week, our neighbor gifted us with a bunch of stuff – lemons, and then chicken, steak, and crab legs in the freezer. WTF? Yeah, thank you! He doesn’t eat much meat. (I missed out on free salmon on vacation from him). I tried to give him some thank you cookies but he didn’t answer. They are still waiting for him for today.

I was talking to a friend today about your website. I love it. She was knitting and we got talking about yarn. She makes dryer balls with wool yarn leftover scented with lavender oil. I thought of you and making homemade gifts this year. Hope it’s an idea for you.

I’m trying to feed 2 adults on $180 per 2 weeks including all toiletries. I have no garden and pretty much shop at winco and Costco . It’s not easy even though we are vegetarians.
