So. Last week was totally different than all the others in my “eat local challenge” I’ve been doing this month. For starters… I stopped drinking tea. Which meant, I didn’t need to buy milk. So I basically had an extra $4 to spend in my grocery budget this past week.
I didn’t stop drinking hot tea because I didn’t want to buy milk… it just sort of happened. For some strange reason about once a year {usually in the summertime} I wean myself off of my morning cuppa of caffeinated tea and start drinking caffeine free iced tea. I don’t really know why… maybe it’s the weather.
Anywho, my trip to the Farmer’s Market this week included LOTS of goodies!
Farmer’s Market $28.50
Rye Bread $5.50
Goat Cheese $3.50
Peas, Lettuce, Spinach $3 each
Quart of Strawberries $5.50
Asparagus $3.50
Tomatoes $1.50
I can’t even tell you the last time I bought a loaf of rye bread. Or goat cheese for that matter. But after a quick scan of the market aisles I quickly decided I needed to include it this week. Since the bread was fresh and really only keeps for 2 days, I went ahead and sliced the bread, wrapped it and popped it in the freezer so I can enjoy it one slice at a time.
Fresh Eggs $3.00 and free rhubarb from a neighbor.
It never ceases to amaze me how so little food can go a long way when you add it to basic pantry staples. Well, that and portion control. 😉

Hi Mavis, do you make your own dressings for your salads? I never see bottled in your pics. I’ve had people self riotously proclaim “What are you gonna do with that huge tub of mayo?!!!) We don’t eat sandwiches but we sure like our dips and dressings.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. This is the one I usually make: Leftover bacon grease, brown mustard, sugar, white vinegar and a little water. I just store it in a container in the fridge. 🙂 Simple and inexpensive.
