While I didn’t keep track of every meal I ate this past week {too much other stuff going on} I did do a pretty decent job of remembering to snap some breakfast and dinner photos. So hey, there’s that to celebrate. Right?
I picked zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes rhubarb and a few leafy greens from the garden last week as well as admired all the handsome winter squash we have growing back there. 5 hubbards, 3-4 sweet meat and some sort of random squash I have yet to identify. When we finally move and I have an enormous garden again, I plan on investing a lot of my time growing all sorts of different varieties of winter squash. I just LOVE it. I could seriously eat it every day.
Albertsons $1.49
Honey Bunches of Oats. Nicely displayed by the HH. 😉
Costco $67.06
Ahhh Costco. It’s just so easy to shop there, isn’t it? Back in the old days when I would spend $800 a month on groceries… Costco got most of my money. Their convience and snack foods are awesome.
The natives were complaining that we didn’t have any “snack food” and so I picked up some Booty, Cape Cod Chips, Fig Bars and yogurts for them. The 24 pack of yogurt was a steal at $6.29 and I grabbed a sack of those giant baked potatoes to toss in the crock pot for the long days that I knew I wasn’t going to want to cook.
Yada yada yada. Here are some of the meals I ate last week:
Big salad with chicken and mozzarella balls. YUM.
Homemade vegetable soup…. with crushed lasagna noodles. Because wasting broken noodles is lame.
Vegetarian chili over rice. The boys LOVED this. I need to make it more often.
You can never go wrong with bagels and cream cheese. Even if you serve it on plates that look like they came from the 1980’s.
More salad. This time with bacon!
Smoothies are rad.
Big breakfast. I always seem to make a big breakfast on sundays and nobody complains.
Oh look, another salad. 😉 I got tired of paying $6 for the salad bar at the hospital so I decided to start making my own. Seriously. If they are not going to offer raisins, sunflower seeds or pickled beets in their line up… why bother?
So there you have it. Not exactly on budget… oh well. 😉
I would love it if someone would add up how much I’ve spent on groceries for the year so far so I can have a running tally in the coming weeks. I’ve already resigned to the fact that I will be over. And I’m totally okay with that. There are bigger fish to fry than to worry about than going over my grocery budget at this point.
Peace out,
~Mavis

Why are you eating at a hospital? Hope no one is seriously sick……
Lissa says
Her brother is seriously ill with advanced colon cancer.
Big hugs Mavis from your adoring fans. Hang in there.

Oh no, that’s horrible. I had a friend who died from that. She was 50. Ignored the symptoms for too long.
I’m so sorry.
Deb Krow says
Mavis – You are averaging around $30 per week, which is absolutely amazing in my book. According to the U.S. Department of Agricultures latest number The cost of feeding a family of four a healthy diet can run $147.60 to $294.50 a WEEK. That is a week not a Month!
Keep doing what your doing and don’t give up your dreams. 🙂

Our Hubbard squash didn’t make it this year ! Now I will have to pay for one or go pie less this winter!!

I.LOVE.SQUASH.TOO
I have a zuchinni and some random squash growing in the flower box beside my front door. Not big producers, but really enjoying the random squash spilling into the yard. Pretty flowers, plus food.

Prayers for you and your brother, your family and friends. I’m so sorry that you are going through this. Be sure to schedule a colonoscopy for yourself when you have time–it’s extremely important since you’re a first degree relative.
You’re wise to keep eating well since stress is the great evil and eating right helps keep you healthy. I take things like water, bananas, protein bars and nuts with me when I do the hospital wait & watch so that I can avoid the cafeteria.

I totally know about stress eating around hospitals and bad diagnoses. When I had my first cancer diagnoses the first thing that came to my mind was “BACON”. I had been on a meal program and hadn’t had real bacon in a year, but was so stressed I made my sister take me out for some. And then a month later again, and a month later some more. My kids got to be afraid to ask me what I was eating. They figured if I was having bacon something bad had happened. Things are better now but I am still craving that bacon….especially during tomato season!!! Thinking good thoughts for your brother and your family.

I can’t begin to relate to the stress of your current situation (and I’m so sorry to hear about what you’re going through), but I’ve reached a similar decision about grocery budgets. Ours isn’t as strict as yours, but I’ve stopped sweating the details. We very rarely waste food, and we don’t go far over budget when we go over, so I no longer spend the energy worrying about it. Going over budget usually means we ate more healthy food that week or month–that’s not really a problem.
Lauren says
I think that you have the exact point there “we rarely waste food”.
My family can afford to go over budget a little and as long as we are eating well and not wasting food then I am happy with that.

Hugs Mavis. You are awesome and very entertaining. I’m sure your brother treasures the time together with you. ❤️❤️

I think you are still doing great. Take care of yourself. I’m amazed at how healthy you are able to eat considering the stress.
