Well, last week was another round of Who the heck cares…. let’s just buy what is quick and convenient because I just don’t have time to deal with thinking about food, meal planning or life in general. It kind of makes me feel NORMAL. Wow. Imagine that.
I get it. I really do. I now understand how people can who have a full time commitment outside of the home just don’t have the ENERGY to make the time to care about finding the lowest price on groceries. But for right now, I’m totally okay with just going with the flow. Really, I am. Being in the present, in the moment is exactly where I need to be. I’m just grateful that I have wiggle room when it comes to my budget. I know that not everyone has that.
The Damage:
Costco $92.11
Quick dinner foods like Ivar’s clam chowder {gag, but the HH and The Girl love it}, pork tamales {for the boys}, Fish {The girl} and smoothies and chicken teriyaki bowls {for everyone} come in handy when all you want to do is pop something in the microwave and chow down.
Have you tried a Hostess cupcake lately? I tried one for the first time in like, I don’t know, 20 years and I could barely choke down the first bite because of the weird preservative taste it had. BARF! I passed it off to Monkey Boy who LOVES them.
Fred Meyer $26.18
I splurged and bought some beautiful winter squash.
Fred Meyer freebies…. Hummus seasoning for my parents annual wine and cheese basket and Swedish fish for The Girls’ stocking. I love free stuff.
Here are a few of the meals I ate last week:
Butternut squash couscous salad {recipe coming up next} and fish.
Hospital chef salad with a side of rug hooking.
You can never go wrong with an egg salad sandwich.
Leftover turkey soup. I love my crockpot. 😉
Well, that’s it. I didn’t take to many photos this time around. I’ll try and be better about it this week.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

Right now our Trader Joes has great prices on butternut and delicata squash! If you have one closeby–check those out. And great job on being able to adjust your goals and mindset!

When I was in high school (many, many years ago), I had a 2-pack of Hostess Cupcakes, a Pepsi, and a few cigarettes as my breakfast every single school day. I tried a Hostess Cupcake a few years ago and I, too, just about gagged–I couldn’t even finish it.

Who Knew? Talapia have ‘loins’, lolol.
Mavis, please don’t worry about the grocery budget stuff right now. Your family is more important. The fact that you even keep track is much more than most do and I look forward to every one of these posts not matter what the outcome is, so no worries. Besides, I love all the pictures of the food too, lol.
(BTW, I used Raise the other day for Christmas presents, and it was great! Thanks)

ooops, *TILapia, lol

Good for you on making the adjustment and changing your mind set. Now is not the time to beat yourself up! You are still doing GREAT on savings, and you are going through a very difficult time in your family. Hang in there, do the best you can, and keep us updated. There’s no point in beating yourself up. You would tell us to be nice to ourselves, so it’s time we return the favor to you!
PS: If you lived closer I would totally bring you meals so you didn’t have to eat crappity crap when you are so tired!

Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

1. We all do the best we can with our grocery budgets. You do a great job!
2. Hostess has not been the same since the new bakery took over. I used to like Hostess products but not now.
3. That couscous butternut squash looks awesome! I have a bunch of sweet potatoes. Do you think that would work?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes! Absolutely. Sweet potatoes would be great.
Jfred says
Oh, my heart is heavy for you. I pray for you, your brother, and your family. I’m sorry this is such a hard time.
Marcia says
Well, I don’t have quite the energy for getting the *best* prices on everything. But I do try, and have been for years and years.
And you still spent about $10 less than me! So even your “not trying” is pretty good.
Times like this, just do what you are doing.
