Well. It was a doozy of a week. Family wise and spending wise.
OHAM reader Shelle said it best a few weeks ago when she wrote “{Life is} beautiful and sad and joy-filled and tragic and wonderful and heart-breaking.”
And that’s all I want to say about that.
Here’s what I purchased last week:
Fred Meyer $27.52
Thanks to a bunch of Fred Meyer ecoupons I was able to save a few extra bucks on canned goods and yogurt. Fred Meyer hasn’t been advertising that their apples and pears are on sale for $0.99 a pound but each week I seem to wander over to the produce section to check and they are. Weird. You’d think they would sell a bunch more at those prices but maybe they just want their regular shoppers to find the deal instead. Who knows.
Albertsons $22.70 {no picture}
I went in for cake supplies and came out with a few extras. It happens. Also, Cocoa Pebbles rule! I wouldn’t want to eat them everyday of the week but once a year? They’re fun.
Costco – $197.84
I knew it would happen eventually. It always does around this time of year. I’m doing pretty good with my grocery budget and then I walk in Costco for one thing and go home with a cart full because all at once…. the crowds get to me and I go into “I’m just going to buy a ton of food so I don’t have to step foot back in the store until after the holidays because seriously, WHERE DID ALL THESE PEOPLE COME FROM!?”
I let anxiety get the better of me. And I should feel bad. But I don’t.
On a side note: I hid some of the snacks in my suitcase and then tucked it away in the storage room. 50 bucks says the boys won’t look there. 😉
Fred Meyer $9.47
Fred Meyer has Dave’s Killer Bread on sale for $.99 a loaf this week and Tillamook cheese for $4.99 for the 2lb loaf! Stock up people. Seriously. The bread freezes really well and you just can’t beat that price.
Here are some of the meals I ate last week {snacks not included}:
Monday
Breakfast – Oatmeal with blueberries
Lunch – Tuna Salad
Dinner – Potato and Corn Soup
Tuesday
Breakfast – Shirley’s Iced Cinnamon Raisin Toast
Lunch – Brussel Sprouts
Dinner – Big Salad
Wednesday
Breakfast – Shirley’s Iced Cinnamon Raisin Toast
Lunch – Tomato soup and crackers
Dinner – Party platter
Thursday
Breakfast – Cocoa Pebbles
Lunch – Hummus and crackers
Dinner – Lentil Soup
Friday
Breakfast – Oatmeal with blueberries
Lunch – I have no idea
Dinner – Big salad with salami, egg, apple, cucumber, peppers and cheese
Saturday
Breakfast – Oatmeal with blueberries
Lunch – Egg salad sandwich
Dinner – Big salad with sweet potatoes, bacon, apples, dried cranberries and cheese
Sunday
Breakfast – Big breakfast
Linner – Mexican food {date day with the HH!}
I spent $257.53 on groceries last week. How about YOU? How much did YOU spend on food last week?

I hear you about Costco. I go to BJ’s but it’s the same thing. Sometimes too,you get caught up in the deals. last week I got a huge pineapple for $1.99 and for whatever reason it just snowballed from there! 🙂

I feel the need to say this every time you post something new- Thank you for continuing to blog while you are going through this painful time. Hopefully it brings you some sense of normalcy and/or escape. XO

I have never heard of Daves killer bread at that price-wow! sad I’m no longer near a Freddy’s-thanks for the post

My thoughts are with your family at this time.
Boy, that is a screaming deal for Dave’s Killer Bread! If only we had a Fred Meyer.
I have to say, Costco always blasts my weekly budget. Always. But I’ve also done the math and I *know* that the items we buy there are cheaper than any other place. So long run, it saves me money. Still painful. Hubby did the $58 costco run last week and couldn’t find the receipt. He said “it wasn’t bad!”
I found it later and said, “No, not bad, but our weekly budget is $125 and $40 of that is the produce box, so…”
We broke $200 this week by about $1. Ouch

When I saw the Costco food across the top, I thought your dh had shopped for you. I go 3 X week to see what’s new and to eat their samples. My weakness if what’s new and a deal on the cookware aisle and the men’s clothes etc. If you want fewer crowds, go to Costco 45 min before closing. You won’t have a line to checkout and you can go up and down with your cart free of people. Of course there are no snacks then, but I know you like to get in and out quickly. Sending my hugs and love to your family.

Condolences to you and yours Mavis. One day at a time.
Sue R. says
Is that an unadvertised special at Fred Meyer with Dave’s bread and Tillamook cheese? Not in their flyer…I’ll have to stop by to check! Thanks!
Julie says
Yeah, I just looked in the ad and am wondering the same thing! Was it LAST week? Is it $.99 after coupons?? I think I will stop by this afternoon and take a look.
Alice says
I live in Covington, WA and I’ve noticed several times that her FM ad is different than mine ( even in the same close area). I’ve looked at her FM ad online, and sure enough she gets the *killer deals* and we don’t.
Julie says
Ha! Just looked it up and you’re right. Gig Harbor is the place to be!
Sue R. says
Wonder if another Fred Meyer store would honor the deals if you brought in proof of pricing…
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh how funny. I thought they’d all be the same for Washington. I hope you got the bread deal. I may have to go back for more.
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s a coupon in our weekly ad Sue. Maybe yours is different?
Sue R. says
Nope, not in our ad in Oregon. Bother!

prayers and thoughts coming your way.
If I ever saw the Dave’s killer bread for $.99 a loaf, I would have bought every loaf! I pay almost $5 a loaf here! *sigh*
I have heard it is expensive to live in the PNW, but I gotta tell you, I am thinking of moving….
*hugs*
Stephanie says
We spent about $85 on food this week. It’s a rough estimate because my husband did the shopping this week (since I just had a baby) and he went to Walmart, so not sure how much was non-food stuff. He always buys more ice cream and cereal than I do, but it’s still not bad, 85 is pretty close to our weekly average for our family of 5 (now 6).
Laura says
I’m so sorry Mavis.
Dana says
You are the bomb-diggety, Mavis! Staying busy pursuing your many passions will help get you through the dark days now and ahead. You are strong! I live in SC and I’m thinking our version of Fred Meyers is Kroger. I suspect this since the deals are very similar…
Gail says
The Kroger Company has 20+ different grocery store names. In the PNW there’s Fred Meyer, while here in southern California we have Ralph’s. At Ralph’s today Dave’s Killer Bread was on sale, but only for $1 off the
regular price, not the great deal you bought.
Julia says
I too hide snacks from the men folk in our house!! Once I caught them in the basement on a treasure hunt for the Tastycakes my son knew I hid somewhere down there. They never did find that hiding place, but they gave fond plenty others!!
