Market Basket $22.32
The HH says he buys the Oui yogurt cups for me, but by the time I go to grab one, they’re all gone. Funny how that works out. Also, the price of bananas never seems to change. They’re always in the $0.59 – $0.69 a pound range.
Note to self: Make a pan of homemade mac and cheese this week. And maybe some sheet pan nachos. Because nachos are always a good idea.
Market Basket $49.94
After eating out for nearly a month I had had enough and told the HH I was craving some homemade stuffed shells and the Stove Top Stuffing meatloaf… So off to the store he went. {Not pictured: 16 oz. ricotta cheese and 2 boxes of frozen spinach.}
What is it about such basic home cooked meals that makes us happy? They’re so satisfying.
We know how the mashed potatoes are going to taste {a few lumps please!} and that there will be leftovers staring back at us in the fridge and {neither of us are ones to linger at the table} we can be done up from the table in 10 minutes.
Eating at home rules. And it’s the most basic meals that I like the most.
So my husband does this really odd thing. Or at least I think it’s odd. Whenever he comes back from the store, he has this burning desire to unpack the groceries and tell me about each and every item.
It’s the strangest thing.
For instance… I had written down “soft butter” on the grocery list. He then proceeds to remove the tub of butter from the bag and tells me about all the different types of soft butter there was to choose from {butter with sea salt, butter with canola oil, light butter with canola oil etc.} WHO DOES THIS!?
And he wonders why my eyes glaze over and I walk away as soon as he starts his routine. He wasn’t even aware that he did this until I made him stop {mid sentence} so I could take a picture.
I think he missed his calling as a product demonstrator.
We’ve been married for 30 years now, and everyday I feel like we’re getting closer and closer to turning into the Costanza’s.
Side note: The HH thinks toast requires “soft butter” while I could care less if I am cutting a thin slice of butter from a stick and putting the slice of butter on said toast because I have this thing called patience.
I am sure there are a hundred million things that I do that make him crazy… But still, sometimes I just have to shake my head.
Farm Stand $50.25
Yikes, right? Especially when you compare what I bought at the farmstand compared to what the HH picked up at Market Basket. But the jam was $8 {I wasn’t able to make any this summer} and the LOCAL blueberries were $8 each so for just those 4 items it was $32.
Local berries for pie {and real jam} are something I’m willing to pay big money for. Also, for some strange reason, it doesn’t bother me to pay top dollar for produce when I know I’m getting the real deal. Something that was grown close by.
Weird, I know.
Meatloaf beatloaf! One for dinner and one for the freezer. And hey, meatballs!
Same goes for the stuffed shells. One in the belly, one for the freezer. Maybe if I make a few more freezer meals I can talk the HH into that upright freezer from Costco we saw a few weeks ago.
Trader Joe’s Kung Pao chicken. The best darn thing they sell in my opinion.
Simple food, made in your own kitchen, you just can’t beat it. 🙂
So what’s new in your neck of the woods? Are you feeling the urge to slow down too? What are you making for dinner tonight? I may just have to make it too.
Peace Out,
~Mavis

I made your Creamy Chicken Wild Rice Soup last night (even though it was still 90 degrees yesterday here in Alabama) and it was so good. Still my favorite soup.:)
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh that’s one of our favorites!!! Thanks for the reminder. https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/copycat-panera-cream-of-chicken-and-wild-rice-soup-recipe/

That’s funny … I made the soup last night too!
Mavis, you might reconsider that particular freezer from Costco. I was in the market for a new upright freezer myself and found the recent reviews for that particular freezer to be surprisingly and consistently bad.

My husband said, “Go get it” when I mentioned the freezer (he hears me grumble as I search for things in our chest freezer every day) and then I too read the reviews. Sounds like more risk than I’m willing to take. 🙁

Yum. I love your posts that show all your dinners. Tonight it’s shepherd’s pie and the week’s menu includes chicken fettuccini and leftover pork roast in gravy over rice.
Deb says
Three blueberries and a jam come to $32.

Whoops! Thanks Deb.

Looks like a week of yummy meals! My husband was out of town for work last week. We’re fortunate that we have family friends with kids the same ages and they had us over for dinner twice(!). You can’t beat good friends. And the tasty meals they make!

I’m with you on paying higher prices for fresh locally grown produce. The grower has time and expenses into it. If it seems very high, I just don’t buy it.
Meals will be odd for a few days. Today my husband starts modified eating for a colonoscopy later in the week.

We have created something new for us. Tater tots topped with chili, cheese and sour cream. It’s simple, filling and delicious.
Mavis Butterfield says
My husband would love that!

Making this at my SIL’s birthday request. It is divine. It includes pickled jalapeños but it is not hot. The grands go back for more. I follow recipe exactly but add sausage/ham if I have it. It’s supposed to be freezable but there are never any leftovers. It may be similar to trader joes hatch Mac and cheese but I’ve never had that. I think I’m going to put your breadcrumb topping on 1/2 of it this time and see how that pans out.

Well, bags of chocolate chips are now over five dollars for 10 ounces. Which I think is Highway robbery.

We were doing our best without power and water after Hurricane Helene. Glad to have the power back on and able to cook this week.
Sue S. says
So glad your outage was relatively short. We have been praying for hurricane victims and will keep it up because of the next one “coming down the pike”. Hope it misses you this time.

I clicked on your stuffed shells link and it keeps taking me to manicotti – I’m assuming it’s the same filling? If so, any difference in the baking?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, it’s the same recipe. I cook them until they are warmed through. 🙂

Your hubby is looking for your approval. He describes it all so you tell him he made the correct choice or tell him another one he should have chosen. I grew up having to explain everything to my parents, the choices I had and the choice I made. I think they needed to give me their approval! lol
Sherry says
I have a question for you Mavis. What do you put on your vegetables and mashed potatoes? My mother always put butter on them. So that is how I still like it. Do you do the same?
Mavis Butterfield says
Butter, sour cream salt and pepper. A little milk if I need it. 🙂

Great food and pics! This post is making me hungry and more motivated to grocery shop!

Hi, Mavis. Your description of your HH giving you the rundown of his shopping process amused me! My husband has always liked to read through the circular and announce EVERY SINGLE item on sale that he thinks we might be interested in. I thought that was in the past since we don’t receive the circulars anymore. Then yesterday he excitedly opened a packet of coupons and proceeded to read all of them. I couldn’t take it and told him to write it on the list instead, reminding him that I would forget otherwise. Fingers crossed that he’s not regressing to his old habits.

Blueberry bushes as a hedge against your back fence. An $8, 1 gallon plant will pay itself back within a couple of years. I now have 12 bushes and get gallons of berries each year. SO worth it!
