I never really thought of myself as an indoor plant type of person until yesterday when I looked around and all the sudden noticed that I had accumulated over a dozen or so indoor plants this past winter.
It’s kind of strange really, after so many years of thinking of gardening as solely an outside thing… To all the sudden be tending plants during the winter months.
Had it not been for our frequent trips to Trader Joe’s this winter, I probably wouldn’t have anything more than the white orchid plant I picked up at The Home Depot last fall.
Indoor gardening. I have no idea I’d love it so much. And I must admit, I think I’m beginning to become a little addicted to it.
I think my only requirement is color. I need something a little more exciting than the color green to keep me interested. And luckily, I’ve had plenty to choose from at Trader Joe’s.
I simply can’t leave that store without coming home with a little potted plant.
I bought this rosemary plant LAST FALL and it’s still going strong!
The HH paid $8.99 for this pot of spring on a day when it was 22 degrees outside. And let me tell you Bob, it was worth every penny to have a gentle reminder that my own garden would be filled with tulips and daffodils soon as well.
My shamrocks are still looking good.
Indoor gardening. I had no idea I’d love it so much.
Do you have a bunch of indoor plants too? What are some of your favorite ones? I’m on the hunt for a nice “string of pearls” plant. I’m hoping to find one soon.

That begonia is beautiful! Every year I look for that color to plant outside, but never thought about having it as a houseplant!

I normally don’t buy coral colored plants, but it was so pretty I couldn’t resist.

That begonia is stunning! I think your orchids would make my daughter turn green with envy! She tries so hard, she really does.
I basically can’t have any plants in my house OR even a bouquet of flowers! I have two cats now that just think that I bring flowers into the house for them to eat. Most flowers are toxic to cats sadly.

When I was growing up, we had a cat that enjoyed arranging vases of flowers. We’d set out a vase and come back to find he’d rearranged them. It was just a hobby, so he never ate them, thank goodness. He would occasionally remove a single flower if he felt it didn’t fit the arrangement though.
Holley says
Oh Mel, that’s hilarious!

I have indoor plants. 2 kinds of trailing ivy, schfellera, plant like string of pearls but pearls are shaped like little bananas, aloe Vera, orchid, dracena, Swedish ivy, christmas cactus, unknown one that blooms pale shrimp colored blooms and a semi succulent that blooms. They are in bright south facing dining room and sunroom with mostly indirect south and east light depending on the season. I have had houseplants since college. Most were gifts or passed on.

Orchids are my weakness. It’s best that I don’t count them. I also love to force spring bulbs for an early preview. I plant clearance bulbs in pots in the fall water then once and stash them in the garage. Once I start to see green poking up they come inside. This year I experimented with staggering when I brought them in and was able to make them last a couple weeks longer.

I have a funny story how I got my orchid. During the heavy rains we had in San Diego a floral company’s warehouse flooded and they were devastated. I made a nice cash contribution to them because I felt bad for their situation as it was almost Valentine’s Day.
The next morning I was swimming at a local pool and as I got out of the water a man approached me with a large beautiful orchid. I jokingly said Oh you brought me flowers! He laughed and said it was for me, someone had given him an orchid and he knew he would kill it. He saw me getting out of the pool and stopped his car to gift it to me. It was so sweet it made my day and it brought the flower story full circle about how much joy flowers can bring people.
And the best news is two months later the orchid is still thriving!

So very pretty! I have about 30 houseplants. I was going to start listing my favorites but then realized that it’s pretty much all of my plants, so that was going to be a long list. 😉 Don’t discount the green plants! The leaves are interesting, and there are black varieties of some plants which also add interest (I have a Raven ZZ, for example).

Myself and my three children are all about the house plants. If you’re ever in central Ohio, you’ll have to check out https://www.groovyplantsranch.com/ , the source of all crazy house plants around here.

Although I have many different houseplants, my favorite is the African violet. I have quite a few and the blossoms stay beautiful for a very long time. I propagate my own from leaves that accidentally break off.
Funny story, once while standing in line at a grocery store they had a display of African violets right next to the checkstand. A rambunctious little boy bumped the plant display and a broken leaf fell to the floor. I surreptitiously picked it up, tucked it in my purse, and brought it home to root in a container of water. It did and is now a gorgeous plant!

Yes, me too! Orchids are my favourite and if you can grow and regrow them. Then think about gardenias and jasmine. In winter their beautiful light scent in your home will be a delight. Gardening should be a year round in my opinion. Not much work, but such a joy.

There is not enough light in this house to grow anything. I am trying to keep lemon and lime tree alive. Plus, I have allergies.

We downsized from a huge house to a small home with 5 windows! Good light comes from the south facing window, so most of my plants are huddled in front of that light source. I have one plant in particular, a golden Pothos, that I brought from California when I moved to Washington 30+ years ago. It was a small plant at that time. It’s now quite large. It’s in a basket with a handle, and as the plant grows, we just keep winding it around the handle. I think if I were to untangle the mess we created, that it would stretch from here to the Canadian border! I could probably take cuttings and offer dozens to others because there is so much to the plant!

I love all of your plants! I wish a Trader Joes was closer to me. I have many houseplants. My favorites are the zz plants and spider plants. I can’t bear to throw away any spider babies that get knocked off, so I have many.

My husband did the same thing! He surprised me with a pot of pretty orange and yellow tulips and it made my house all springy. 🙂 But spring has definitely sprung down here in the southeast.
