I’m telling you. If you buy your chicks from Wilco you are going to get a roo! Sexed chickens my arse. It happened to me, a friend of mine and the hillbillies TWICE. That being said, Mrs. HB is tired of Buttercup trying to mount her hens so if you’re local and want a rooster…. let me know. I can hook you up.
Word in the coop is that the girls are willing to pitch in 2 dozen eggs to anyone who can take him away within the next 48 hours.
The hens are too nervous to take dust baths with Buttercup prancing around. And you know what? I don’t blame them.
In other news… The Hillbillies somehow outsmarted the deer this year and as a result got their first harvest of Granny Smith apples.
And they are huge according to Mrs. HB.
Now, if she can just keep them out of reach from the dog all will be well in the universe.
Proof that chicken fertilizer will give your garden a boost. Take a look at that savoy cabbage! Ain’t she pretty?
Next on Mrs. Hillbillies homesteading agenda… Dandelion wine.
You go girl!
Have a great day… Ya’ll.

My mom was a great gardener…had the greenest thumb on earth, and she used a combo of chicken and steer manure…from her own animals, even. No buying shit for her…hehehe

Out of curiosity how do you apply the chicken fertilizer to the garden? When I remove mine from the coop there are shavings mixed in. Do you place it directly onto the garden or sift out the shavings?
Sorry I don’t need a roo…..still praying I don’t have one.
Mrs. HB says
I don’t make much of an effort to clean out the droppings unless it’s a rock or stick. I will pile up in area away from house for a while and put in two maybe three times a year. I am not a Mavis Buttefield for sure but it’s fun to see what you can do with just a little effort.

We bought our Brahma at Wilco and it also turned out to be a rooster. And it looks just like the one in the picture.

Back in the day when chicks were lovely shades of pastel for Easter, my siblings and I each received a chick! As the chicks grew they had to be moved out of the city. We took our 2 chicks and a roo to my grandmother who lived in the country.
On a subsequent visit we noticed the roo was missing.
When asked about the roo, my grandmother, who never minced words, said she ate him!
So Mrs. Hillbilly could have lunch and a new feather pillow on which to rest!
Mrs HB says
I would in a heart beat ….being from the south and of very hearty stock. Even looked up how the ring it’s neck . My mom had to do it all the time as a child. However my NW raised hillbilly kids couldn’t hack it . I am afraid I would scar them for life ,as so they told me.:(

HA! When we got chickens my 10 year old said he couldn’t believe we planned to “dispatch” them in a few years. He claimed he was going to become a vegetarian. That lasted for less than 24 hours when I strategically planned bacon with breakfast 🙂 I’ve been blunt with the kids that if they are willing to eat Costco chicken and Chic Fil A, then they should be willing to eat humanely raised, happy chickens. They don’t want to know the conditions the other chickens are raised in. At least ours have had a good, spoiled life. Good luck finding a home for him.

“Sexed chickens my arse” !!!
I just fell off my chair!

Such a shame – beautiful looking bird!
We don’t raise chicks… we get them at point of lay so by that stage its pretty clear which gender we have.
Maybe one day I will give raising little chicks a go!
Have a great day!!

So pretty! He reminds me of the taxidermy mount one that my mother has in her kitchen. I hate the mount, but she thinks it is wonderful. It is the most expensive chicken investment I’ve ever seen and she didn’t even get the meat! I hope you find a home or table for him.
