Word of the Day: Bellicose Definition: Warlike, wanting to fight Used in a sentence: He showed a bellicose disposition when the remark was made to him.
Can you see it in her eyes? This pup means BUSINESS. Lucy thinks cookies and cheese are way better snacks than carrot sticks. 😉 So if you have anymore healthy snack alternatives for her to try… I’m desperate.
Have a good Monday and Keep Calm and Carry On,
♥ Mavis

Try no salt, canned green beans. Filling and low in calories, my pugs LOVE them! Also, apples, no peel.

Oh Mavis…my poor pup is also on a diet. Our Cocker Spaniel weighed in at 38lbs at the start and looked like a sausage on sticks. He’s been getting chunks of apples here and there but he’s pretty tired of all this. We give him one cheat day a week, Sundays! He gets to lick the dinner plates after supper.
Colleen says
I give my dogs raw chunks of zucchini, peeled apples, carrots, pineapple, cucumber, Banana, assorted frozen berries, watermelon, cooked sweet potato chips (no salt), frozen peas/broccoli. I also give them frozen yogurt cubes, and ice cubes, just plain ice cubes. They like to crunch em.
But its all in moderation, and rarely when I am eating; if I am standing in the kitchen eating fruit I will wait until I am almost done, and then share a bite for them. And then show them there is nothing left, so no point in their shameless begging,
Jessica says
I JUST got the Rodelle baking cocoa this weekend! I have heard it is amazing.. it is 6.99/tub at Costco!
Butterflyweed says
Morning Mavis, Try drying some sweet potato or butternut squash sliced in your dehydrator. They will have a sort of jerky consistency for her.
Brooke says
I like to give my pups banana chips as treats. They also like blueberries.
suzy anderson says
Sweet potatoes – raw for Lucy.
Henrietta says
Thought I would let you know that Costco has Women’s Hunter Boots for sale for $79.99 in black or green. Great deal! I picked up a pair of black boots yesterday.
Cindy says
Lucy could also have dehydrated real meat snacks which you could buy or make in your dehydrator. They only need a small bite. You can also try some obedience training or games where she gets moving, to get some exercise, and then gets rewarded with a small treat. How about a food puzzle for her meals so it takes longer to eat and she has to work for it? Most dogs do get over the begging for snacks if you give them something else to do.
Beth says
Just a thought….my dog would sometimes like ice cubes. What about making some ice cubes from meat or vegie stock and giving those to her. It would take her time to get finish licking the cubes and you could dilute the mixture as you like.
judy says
Hi Mavis, I don’t know how you do it all. KUDOS to you. A wise older woman told me a trick with the chocolate cookies. On the recipie, double all of the ingredients except the chocolate chips, so you get twice as many cookies and the fewer chocolate chips work out just fine.
Sheila says
Our dogs go crazy for cauliflower, pumpkin, liver treats, lamb lung (ewww). My daughter will sometimes take their favourites and mix a couple things together – yoghurt & liver treats, or pumpkin & cauliflower – and freeze them. I’m not convinced the one dog actually tastes any…actually, I’m not convinced either dog tastes anything. 🙂 They do, however, know the sound of the little door on the cheese thingy in the fridge and as soon as it opens, a shadowy figure of a cockapoo appears, head tilted for maximum cute & mooch….then the dash shows up….then the cat shows up.
RebekahU says
You could try a spoon of cottage cheese here and there. My doggie loves that!
Carol says
I second the suggestion of food puzzles or treat – delivery toys. Most dogs love to work for food, and the energy expended nearly equals the treat calories. A favorite with my small dogs is frozen peas in a Bobs-A-Lot. Or, try stuffing a Kong with pureed veggies and freezing. Lucy will be entertained for a surprisingly long time, if she’s anything like my dogs. Commercial dog biscuits are often the nutritional equivalent of Oreo cookies for humans. Since you know how to cook, try making your own. An easy recipe: 2 lbs of chicken liver pureed in food processor, mixed with 2 cups of tapioca flour. Form into a ball and flatten on a cookie sheet, bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cut into 1/4 inch squares with a pizza wheel. Store in refrigerator. These are high value, non crumbling treats that Lucy will love.
Lori Bates says
I second (or is it third?) sweet potato or butternut squash dehydrated chips. My malamutes LOVE them.
Michelle says
I have four dogs, with one seriously overweight. Whenever I cut any produce (except the no-nos- onions, garlic, etc.), I always tease them. “Oh, do yooouuuu want a treeaaatttt?” I’ll do it for a few minutes. Next thing I know they are devouring the produce. These strange pooches even enjoy lettuce! With mine, it’s all about making it a game.
They’ll eat anything. Frozen, canned, fresh- doesn’t matter. They’ll even do tricks for them. I have to keep in mind that veggies are dramatically lower in calories than fruits.
Now, whenever I get out the cutting board, I’m completely surrounded. Good for you and Lucy! Sending some love, hugs, and encouragement. Being a dog mommy isn’t so easy!
Ice cubes are fought over around here! We actually have to referee. =)
