Here it is, only Tuesday morning and I already have a boatload of things to tell you.
Larry the lobster arrived. The rest of his pod should be arriving soon. Note to self: Go to bed early. Late night shopping is rarely a good idea. I plan on giving Larry a little makeover… You know, a few barnacles, some eyes, maybe a little white splatter of paint here and there.
I told the HH I saw some mean looking bees buzzing around. He didn’t believe me. Until Lucy and I both got stung. Turns out there was a gigantic CREEPY hive of yellow jackets under the back deck.
Last night he sprayed/soaked the nest with wasp and hornet killer. I stayed inside.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
The roofers are coming today to put a new roof on the barn. Now they won’t get stung. {They called last night to ask if we’d be around today… How’s that for advanced warning? But what do I care… I was planning on staying inside today anyway with the a/c on to make rocky road brownies and soup.
Now I just need the fence people to do their bit and then I can go crazy and plant my borders. Lime burst hydrangeas are HIGH on my list!
We put three rolling racks out on the curb. They were gone in less than 10 minutes. While the HH was outside one {ungrateful} guy took them all. He didn’t even say thank you. Lame. It’s way more fun when people get excited about taking your free stuff.
What do you think about this couch? It’s beachy in a French country sort of way and it has slipcovers which means if it gets dirty I can toss them in the washing machine. I like the no nonsense, straight up and down all business in the front armrests.
They’d be good for sticking pin needles in when I’m making pillows. I think the style would go with the relaxed vibe that I’m going for. The throw pillows are no bueno though.
That’s it. That’s all I’ve got for now.
Peace out.
~Mavis

Love the couch! Do you have a link for it? Thanks.

Didn’t you gave away a couch like that a few days ago?
Mavis Butterfield says
Both of the pieces we gave away were oversized, worn and was not a good fit for the space. 🙂
eliz says
Okay Thanks.
That lime burst hydrangea is a beauty!

Do you miss your Aga? I realize it was not something you could have taken with you, but man, everything you went through to get it. Just curious is all.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes! I loved that stove. 🙂

Love the couch. Perfect classic shape. It’s always the frills I grow tired of like accent tile in a perfectly good backsplash. Curious if you just don’t care for pillows or just not those pillows? Etsy has really nice covers to peruse while late night shopping 😉 . I’d be tempted to paint Larry blue but you will make him look good in your own way. Good luck with the barn. We can’t wait to see pics. Lastly I’m ordering brass cafe curtain rods and clips off Amazon from a neighbor of yours. They’re coming from Shade Dr. of Maine. They look just like the Rejuvenation Hardware type at half the price. He has a 100% 5 star rating.
angie says
Suzanne, thanks for sharing the info about Shade Dr as I need to order hardware but the price kept putting me off of other places. Are you making the curtains yourself?
suzanne says
No but I plan to. I have an off white linen cotton blend from Amazon that I will continue using for a while yet. They’re not my dream curtains but not a top priority. What drives me crazy is the tension bar that I’m currently using. The inner spring makes one panel hang about 1/2″ shorter than the other. It makes my eye twitch. First world problems I know.

You’re giving so much away. Why not have a yard sale? I know you were a big yard sale host for years. Maybe it’s ok to do one big purge since your space seems smaller overall.

We looked at a similar couch when we were looking, but opted to go for an Ethan Allen one with a slight curve down for the arms. I read that sofas like the one you pictured can feel restricting when you sit for more than a few minutes, like sitting in a box with nowhere to rest your arms. My friend bought one and changed it out fairly soon. She said it made the sofa feel smaller than it was to sit on too as well as uncomfortable for your arms. Good luck.
Torry says
Do you mind sharing the details/name of the sofa you choose? We need to replace a very large sofa with something smaller and I love Ethan Allen furniture.
Husband doesn’t like the price tag, but this sofa is over fifty years old. I think we got our money’s worth from it, don’t you?
Jamie says
I just looked at their site and was pleasantly surprised with how many more modern styles they’ve come up with these last few years. I would guess it is the Emerson we bought, but it looks nothing like their website picture. It came in three different widths and different couch seat pillows. Ours has three, not two. Also never saw the throw pillows styled that way which gives it a totally different look. Just look at the arms of that sofa. They have been perfect.
They customize fabrics, size, everything, so you can get very different looks. It wasn’t much more than buying off the shelf and I wanted something to last. Great quality and ours was made in the USA. They even sent someone to setup our sofa and two armless chairs we ordered. (Add washers to feet so they sit perfectly on an uneven floor, etc.)
I’m very slow to make decisions and had been looking for months. 8 years later and I still love my pieces. They had a free design service and the lady had a ton of extra stuff they put into their design. I only ordered my sofa and the two armless chairs she designed. No regrets!
Jamie says
I forgot to add, yes I think you got your money’s worth. Nice job! I hope mine will last that long, and so far, so good!

Like the color, but the couch has too many hard/angular edges and therefore shows as a more formal look. Maybe to have a more “beachy” inviting look, try a softer, rounder arm/back with removable cushions. Pinterest is a good place to look for styles.

I love the pine in the Larry the lobster pic! Can’t wait to see how he turns out. So whimsical and fun. Love the slow reveal of your new place too.
Julia Tracey says
I am dying to see the new place. And wondering what on earth could have made you move again — I am always amazed at your resilience.

Re Couch: perhaps it’s just the picture, but the arms look too high to be comfy and they also look quite narrow. A rolled arm could be much more comfortable to rest an arm on, and also much better to put a pillow against if you want to lay down and take a nap or watch tv laying down.
Holley says
Whatever couch you choose, you should make yourself some of your own pillows for it!!!! That would be beautiful!
Carita says
Years ago my husband and I opted for Stressless chairs. They are very comfy! I recall the salesperson stating the reason the armrests are lower than what you usually see is to more closely mimic the natural bend of arms. I always think of his words as they make so much sense!
Brianna says
I have two flex steel couches like that. I haven’t had them two years and I hate them. They are not slipcovered, but because of the squareness and edges they collect everything. I can tell when people walk by and where because their clothes rub on those edges. Those edges now have picked up color from jeans or whatever clothes rub on them. The color transfer drives me crazy and it is only on the edges you would bump or rub on.
Kippy says
I agree with the box arms looking a bit confining. Our couch is a Ikea Ektorp that has roll arms(perfect for resting your head on when you want to stretch out) I have cream color washable slipcovers for it. Did have beautiful dark blue polyester slipcovers but they easily got snags etc from the cats and the color faded after two washings

Love your blog & u have great design ideas,
Sue says
Larry is dreamy and I cannot wait to see him encrusted with barnacles!
Like everyone else, I would not enjoy those high, squared-off arms. Did you sit-test that sofa?
If you and the HH are looking for side chairs, I cannot recommend highly enough the Hjort Knudsen 8011 small scale recliners at Endicott Home Furnishings. They SWIVEL, they RECLINE, and have a pop-up headrest. So comfortable, so streamlined! But then me & DH cannot imagine life without leather recliners, so there you have it…
