Did you buy an advent calendar this year? Or rather, did you buy your DOG an advent calendar?
Oh my word! Had I known the daily drama that would unfold with Lucy and her calendar from Costco, I’m not sure I would have bought it.
This dog is nuts for her doggie treat calendar!!
12 o’clock is Lucy’s “treat” time in our house, and normally, around 11:15 – 11:30 she starts getting restless, following us around, sticking to us like velcro, waiting for us to say… Do you know what time it is? I think it’s 12 o’clock before giving her daily treat.
But ever since we opened the first window on her advent calendar on December 1st… She now starts at around 9 am and won’t let up until it’s her treat time.
She will actually sit below her calendar, shaking or whining, trying to wear us down to get us to give her the treat a little earlier.
It’s crazy and cute and she totally reminds me of a toddler.
Oh Lucy! She’s got so much personality, I’m convinced she’s a tiny human trapped in a dog’s body.

I am laughing out loud because my Farley has been the same way! We keep moving it to a new hiding spot, but he’s relentless. He is determined to find a way to climb onto his crate, then bounce to the table, then hop onto the top of the china cabinet. He’s never been this nuts over a treat! It’s hysterical & exhausting ha!

That’s hilarious. My husband gave our dog some string cheese and now whenever she hears that rip of opening a string cheese she goes CRAZY. Dogs bring such joy.

This made me smile. Lucy is precious. Our dog and cat have rituals around their treats too. In reference to another comment, my dog comes running if I open string cheese or a bag of skinny pop cheese popcorn.

I accidentally taught my dogs that they too get whip cream when they hear the sound of a spray whip cream being used. Never in my life have i seen my dogs move that fast. Enjoy the advent calendar with Lucy, it obviously makes her very happy.

Lucy has the best life!! My Charlie (went over the rainbow bridge in 2019) would have loved that and done the same thing. When we would come home from grocery shopping, he could hardly wait to get his share of the Costco rotisserie chicken – following us back and forth as we carried in the grocery bags. Dogs are such fun!

I feel your pain! Every night just as we’re about to sit down and watch a little tv our dog decides he needs to go out. So out he goes, does his business, comes back in and he gets a treat and so do our two cats. About 15 minutes later this happens again. And again. And again and again!!! I think the cats have taught the dog how to do this since they’re kinda new around here and this didn’t happen much before they arrived!! Gotta love ’em!

I have three rescued chihuahua-mixes and yes, they each get a Trader Joe’s Advent Calendar! The treats are made with salmon and sweet potato only but they do get excited when it’s time – usually around 3 pm.

Imagine 3 Lucy’s. That what it’s like at my house.

Our Barkley got a Trader Joe’s advent calendar this year. We have a toddler and a preschooler, so he’s getting treats dropped from the table all day long. So not quite as treat motivated. But your story about Lucy made me giggle.

Hi Mavis,
Thank you so much for sharing Lucy’s preciousness with us. I love hearing your stories about her!
I hadn’t noticed the doggy Advent calendars at Trader Joe’s, but I’m going to look tomorrow when we’re there. I don’t have a dog, but my mother and sister have them.

I can relate, but ours is a year round event. Pepper, our 11 year old Golden Retriever, gets a Dentastix ‘toothbrush’ after eating dinner. She now thinks as long as she eats some dinner she should get her toothbrush. I have given up making her eat everything. Sometimes she finishes dinner after having the toothbrush.
