UPDATE: This Giveaway is now CLOSED.
Last weekend was Maine Maple Sunday {a weekend long event where sugar houses all over the state open their doors to visitors for tours and tastings}.
So for our date day adventure last week, the HH and I decided to head up to New Vineyard, Maine to visit Schanz Family Maple. Schanz Family Maple is owned by OHAM reader Dawn and her family and I’m so glad we went!!
Not only did we get a fantastic tour of their sugar house, we know how much work goes into producing maple syrup on a larger scale {and it’s a lot more work than collecting sap from our two maple trees in the backyard, that’s for sure}.
If there was ever an ideal set up for producing maple syrup {50 acres of land, sap lines that feed into a huge tank, a reverse osmosis system, a huge evaporator, bottling machine etc.} they’ve got it.
And WOW! Talk about not only an investment, but a labor of love.
The toastyness of the sugar house with the woodfire going was also very welcoming. And talk about a great activity to break up the long winters we experience here in Maine.
If only we had more of the right kind of trees to tap… I think we’d be doing the same thing.
In addition to opening up their sugar house for Maine Maple Sunday every year, Dawn also sells her family’s maple syrup online through her website and in her Etsy shop: Schanz Family Maple. {Thank you for the awesome tour Dawn!!}
While we were there we had the chance to sample some of their delicious maple syrup products and even picked up a few bottles so we could give them away here on One Hundred Dollars a Month.
Anyone interested in a bottle of real Maine maple syrup!? 😉 Keep reading…

As someone who was raised on Golden Griddle *syrup* I branched out in my adulting years and tried Mrs Buttersworth, Hungry Jack and Aunt Jemima/Pearl Milling brands. For some reason we never used store brand pancake syrup, (obviously mom thought were too good for that?), and the first time I ever shopped and purchased my own I bought a really bad store brand so I never tried that again.
Real Maple always seemed very pricey. I did buy some once.. no idea what brand but lets assume it was not high quality. It did not stick with me as worth it for the price. Sure the tiny bottles you get with your meal at Cracker Barrel taste good… is that actual taste or merely aesthetic, I have no idea. A while back I purchased a small bottle at Trader Joes and used it for a homemade granola recipe and forgot about it in the fridge.
All this to say I would be very happy to try the real deal and I have no idea which flavor to request- I love surprises! lol

I live in Minnesota where we also are able to make our own maple syrup. We tried it one year, and it IS a lot of work. Glad we tried it and were so proud to have done it, but not very practical for us. Rookie mistake — we boiled it too long and it crystalized. It was delicious but I had to settle for maple chunks, laboriously chipped out. Still, I have a great appreciation for maple syrup and use it as my main sweetener since I avoid sugar as much as possible. Just found your blog through Barefoot Mom.
