Mavis’ 12 Days of Giveaways – Day 8 – Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: A Visual History
While Mrs. Hillbilly and I were in Watson’s Greenhouse in Puyallup, Washingtonian {of all places!} a few weeks ago I noticed a book on a table that was slightly out of character for a garden center. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: A Visual History. I couldn’t believe it and picked it up immediately. I think I may have even gave the book a little hug.Â
Last year I watched the documentary Mister Rogers and Me and found myself with tears in my eyes several times during film as memories of my childhood and sitting in front of our little tv in the living room came flooding back. Mister Rogers meant so much to so many of us kids who grew up in the late 60’s early through early 80’s and it makes me sad that today’s children don’t have that. Where has all the kind, nurturing, calm {and non commercial} children’s programming gone? The way of the dodo bird, that’s where.
Did you know that Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Seasons 1 – 7 are now available on Prime? Yes, yes they are. And I think I’m going to watch all the episodes I can this winter while I’m working on my rug hooking projects. I can’t think of a more soothing background noise than Mr. Rogers’ voice, can you?
Those of us who grew up with Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on PBS, we’re the lucky ones. And this book I want to give away, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: A Visual History is for all of us kids at heart, who have such fond memories of that kind and gentle man. This book, and all it’s behind the scenes photos, is simply wonderful. And you need it in your life.
2 people will each win 1 copy of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: A Visual History
All you have to do to enter this giveaway is leave a comment below about one of your favorite things from your childhood. That’s it. 🙂
I hope you have a wonderful day. ♥ Mavis

Mr. Rogers has a special place in my heart too. My memory is watching PBS at my grandma’s house with a TV tray of snacks. Those were the days!
Janet says
Mr. Rogers was my special friend. I was a very quiet child who grew up in a quiet house. I recoiled at anything loud and in-your-face. This man spoke to me on my level. Despite being mercilessly teased about him by my much older brothers, I loved watching his show. It always felt like a warm hug from someone who loved me!
Heidi P says
I LOVED watching Mr Rodgers growing up. Even as I got older I’d look forward to staying home from school when ill and getting to watch.
Teresa P says
A blast from the past! Cuddling in my dad’s recliner, eating snacks, humming along, singing along, hanging on to his every word! Happy, calm, peaceful times…
Much needed today…
Amanda Pemberton says
I love that this is your giveaway, it’s so in the spirit of Mr. Rogers. As a child, I didn’t always have a ton of family time, but my sister and I did love watching both Bob Ross paint and Mr. Roger’s just teach about life. Life was so much calmer with those two men on my tv. I still watch Bob Ross when I can’t sleep (Netflix), and yesterday I took my 15 year old to the Mr. Roger’s movie. I also enjoyed his documentary a few years ago. Thanks for listening!
Natalie says
I’m from Pittsburgh, he’s our hometown hero!
Rhonda Varshay says
One of my favorite memories as a child was hanging out at my grandparents farm with my siblings and my cousins. And poking fun at Mr. Rogers. Though, I now love Mr. Rogers.
Michelle Paskavitch says
I absolutely loved the trolley going to the land of make believe, but my favorite episode was the trip to the crayon factory where they showed the orange crayon being made. I don’t know where all those great shows have gone. Kids are being rushed to go up so fast and for all the wrong reasons.
Kimberly N says
I very fondly remember visiting my neighborhood library all the time. Checking out as many books as I was allowed, using the encyclopedias when I was working on a school project, and that wonderful day when I got to move to the teen section on the other side of the library. The library was my safe haven and I loved being there.
Sharon says
Playing outside and pretending. ( our bicycles became elephants in the jungle, etc)
While I didn’t grow up with Mr. Rogers, (only two channels on that little black and white) watching episodes now, I’m so impressed and totally agree with his style of teaching and relating to children!
Kelly E says
Mr.Rogers, Sesame Street, and then Little House on the Prairie when I was older!

Mr. Rogers holds so many memories for me. This was the best show when I was a child. We revisited it when my children were little.
Kay Bowles says
I have so many wonderful memories of my childhood…at 67 years of age, I was blessed to grow up in an era where children had all the advantages that today’s children don’t have. My best friend and I would bike to the library downtown and then come back to her house because she had the best climbing tree in her back yard. We would take our books and a glass of kool aid and climb up in that tree to our favorite crook and spend a hot summers afternoon reading in the shade and breeze of that wonderful tree.
Paula says
Yes, Mister Rogers is my favorite childhood memory. I grew up in Pittsburgh! He is a state treasure! One of our amusement parks has a Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. You can ride trolley!

I was born in the 80s. Mister Rogers was still on then. My older brother attended Rollins college in FL. The same college Mister Rogers went to. I thought that was pretty cool then.
Cass says
One of my favorite memories of childhood is working in the garden with my Dad. I was the only one with the patience to weed the carrot seedlings. He always thought that it was a special talent to be able to tell carrot from grass. LOL I was always amazed at the amount of carrots we harvested for winter use each fall. My father was an amazing gardener. He grew enough vegetables for a family of 6 each year. Mom froze them as they were harvested. Or pickled them. Or canned them. I didn’t know you could buy veggies in the supermarket until I was old enough to shop for myself. I thought everyone grew their own. And now, I do exactly that. Grow my own.
Thanks Dad.
Laura says
Friday nights watching The Love Boat and Fantasy Island with big bowl of popcorn….

It’s funny every morning I think of Mr.Rodgers. When I come home from taking my daughter to the bus stop I change my shoes for slippers and a coat for my robe..i can still sing the song❤

I agree with Michelle’s comment- the episode going to the crayola factory was the very best!!! As a child holding we got to watch Sesame Street and Mr Rodgers everyday and cartoons on Saturday and Gem and they Holograms on Sunday …… if we were lucky we got to watch Star Search Sunday evenings :). My parents didnt like us to watch too much tv so when I got to watch Mr Rodgers it was a special time. I would pretend I was there with him. Good times! My family still tries to catch an episode or two every now and again ….. miss those special times as a kid on the living room floor singing songs and pretending – thanks for the opportunity to be in the drawing Mavis!!!
Renee’ says

Mr Rogers and Sesame Street were my favorite shows growing up. I watched them well past preschool age. Now, my youngest likes Daniel Tiger and I think they’ve done a good job of preserving Fred Rogers’s spirit in that show.
Wendy M says
Mr Roger’s neighborhood holds a special place in my heart. I grew up near Pittsburgh so his pbs station was the one I watched. So I felt a special connection to him. I had a turbulent childhood and he felt like the dad I never had. I can still sing many of his songs. “You are special” is my favorite. 🙂
Marissa says
I loved watching Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street as a child. I remember bringing my special item to show Mr. Rogers… my husband and I actually went and saw Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood yesterday… was really good 🙂
Jessica says
I’m going to be a bit dramatic here and say I THINK I WILL LITERALLY FAINT FROM HAPPINESS IF I WIN THIS. I adore Mr.Rogers THANK YOU!
One of my favorite things from my childhood was when we lived on 20 acres of land. From birth to age 5. Exploring, playing outside all day, picking blackberries and plums to eat, running through the forest, playing in the creek, getting dirty…. I loved it.
Sheila says
When I was little, my Grandma watched me during the day while my parents were at work. We watched PBS children’s shows, but my favorite was always Mr. Rogers. Whenever he would do a craft project, my Grandma would disappear for just a minute and then return with everything we needed to make the craft with Mr. Rogers. I would hold my craft up to the TV for him to see, and he always thought mine looked great! My grandma was a master gardener, excellent cook, and could turn ANYTHING into art…even tin cans. She gave me all of her craft things and quilt pieces before she passed, and I have several of her perennials that I dug up before she sold her house. Everything I do with gardening and crafting is due to her influence. I haven’t put any of her quilt pieces together yet because they’re in totes and when I open the totes up, they smell like Grandma…I”m not ready yet to lose the smell of Grandma in order to finish her creations. I’ll get there one day, but not yet.
Shari says
Mr. Rogers and The Friendly Giant. Such warm shows <3
Sandra Smith says
My fondest childhood memories are yearly family camping trips to Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Playing on the beach and walking the pier wasting nickels on the boardwalk games and treats was something I adored
Sue says
What the world needs now is quiet peace, such wonderful memories. Sadly today Our children are consumed with to much technology. But that’s just this grandmothers perspective. Mr. Rogers, great show.
Jennifer says
The swing set in our backyard in New Jersey. It was the cheap, common kind with two swings and that two-person swing where the two kids face each other like you’re in a boat, and a slide. Lots of good time spent out back on the swings.
Tracy Tidwell says
Playing with my dolls.
JoElle says

So many fond memories of my childhood – it was such a slower time. Gardening with my dad, riding bikes everywhere and going to the library was a special outing. I remember losing my little library card and crying because I thought I’d lost privileges of checking out a book. A .15 fee made it all right in my world again. Those were the days…
Judy Anderson says
Playing outside with the neighbor kids until our mother’s called us for dinner!
Ellen Marshall says
Oh my goodness! this is wonderful! My grands have watched a spin off from Mr Rodgers called Daniel Tigers (something…). Remember Daniel from Mr Rodgers-? it has the green light from Mrs Rodgers and is quite sweet. It has become commercial, of course, but still has some good messages.
I have a book of Mr Rodgers quotes which I love.
Thanks so much for the reminder- things were much simpler then ( or we would like to think they were).
Kari says
I loved Mr. Rogers! My brother and I would sit on the floor in front of our old TV to watch it, as well as the Mickey Mouse club. We wore our Kool Aid shirts and Mickey Mouse ears. It was the best!
Looking back, the best part was just the simple-ness and calmness of our childhood compared to today. No technology, no hustle bustle. I wish we could go back.

Amy leigh says
I will be honest, it was hard for me to come up with anything. My good childhood memories are stretched pretty thin. I did love the time I got to spend at ocean shores with my grandfather. My grandmother was there too, but she did not like me. We did not spend out time doing anything special there. We hung around a campfire, I walked alone to the beach, occasionally I got to play with other kids also staying in the same park. Sometimes we got to go to yard sales. I did not get to buy much but I do get caught in nostalgia when I think of yard sales and ocean shores. It was simple, but a high light for me.
Jan says
When I was growing up, we’d go sledding on a big hill in the center of town. Afterwards my friends and I would go to my house where my mom had hot cocoa waiting for us.

Favorite thing about childhood – mom taking care of me when I was sick. I hope my kiddos feel just as loved and cared for!
Judy says
How I loved Mr. Rogers, his calm voice telling “me” that he liked me “just the way you are”. I found that so comforting. Many yrs later I was up at night with a fussy newborn, I turned on the TV. Mr. Rogers was on Johnny Carson, what a nice surprise that was hearing his voice again. Mr. Carson asked him if there was anything that he did that was “naughty”. He replied “not really, but we have an indoor pool and every morning my wife and I go for a swim…naked”. What a hoot! The audience roared, I thought that was pretty cute.
I also enjoyed The Friendly Giant. Memories, where did the time go?
Anne G. in Va says
It has made me smile to see that others *loved* the crayon factory as I did! I live in a rural area where there are no factories so the idea of commercial production of anything and all those machines clanging away to make something always fascinated me.
I also loved speedy deliveries from Mr. McFeely!
I despise so many of the child-sized soap operas that are on tv now for children to watch. My girls like Disney programs but they are just soap operas cast with children.
Emily E. says
Oh Mr. Rogers! That was one of the few shows my parents permitted me to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. His relaxing manner, politeness but still he felt like a close trusted friend. His show was most definitely part of my happy childhood. And I was also one of “those” kids that enjoyed getting ready for a new school year with my new school supplies and taking naps on the bus on my way home. Thanks for reminding me of those warm fuzzies Mavis!
Jeanie says

Caroline says
Christmas time is one of my favorite memories when I was growing up. My mom would give each of us girls a few dollars and we would go to Pick-N-Save together to buy gifts for each other. It was so much fun- all of us being in the store at the same time sneaking around the isles trying to buy gifts for each other without the others seeing what they were. Check out time was a trick but somehow we pulled it off. Fun stuff that!
Thank you for the opportunity to win this book. Mr Rogers always fascinated me as a kid.
Bonnie says

Living way north of Seattle in Washington State (near Lynden), we only got Canadian tv channels so I never got to watch Mr. Rogers. We watched Mr. Dressup, who was pretty much the Canadian counterpart. Now that I have grandkids, I’m appreciating the legacy of Mr. Rogers for the first time!

Patricia Winterscheidt says
Playing ball in the street and yelling CAR! when one was approaching!
Peggy says
I befriended every farm and wild animal I met. A wonderful perk of growing up on a farm.
(I still do). My favorite is when i was about twelve and I was riding my bike and spotted a momma skunk and her four babies down by the creek, so of course I stopped and yelled hello. I was surprised and in awe when she looked up at me and waddled with her babies in tow up through the field, under the fence and she sniffed and then walked across my feet and her babies followed, oh the were so cute, and then, they just walked back under the fence and back down to tge creek, and it was one of the most amazing moments ever! Thanks for the chance to win, and if you ever find yourself visiting Pittsburgh, there’s a bronze statue of him on the North Shore, and a nice display at tge Carnegie Science Center.

Sharon says
As a parent during the 90’s, Mr. Rogers was frequently on the top of the playlist in our house, as a welcome respite from annoying purple dinosaurs and aggressive terrapins. He was the epitome of parenting to aim for, and non-judgmental when you fell short. Miss you, Mr. Rogers!
TS says

Kirsten says
I LOVE Mr. Rogers! I grew up watching him, and he was just wonderful. That being said, one of my favorite memories from my childhood is when my younger sister and I used to wear this great big jacket that was my fathers. We would stand side by side and each put one arm in a sleeve, and then either my mother or father would Hutton up the coat so it would just hang on us. Such a silly, small thing, but it makes me smile thinking about it.
Diane says
Every year for the Holidays, my Mom would bake for days. I’d help sometimes and we would make all sorts of Holiday cookies. There would be piles of tins and Tupperware on the dining room table. She should then make the most gorgeous plates of cookies. You almost hated to open them up, they looked so good. Mom would pass them out to neighbors, friends, co-workers, the Pastor at church, the Fire and Police departments, I don’t even know if I know who all got a plate. There were cookies set aside in case anyone showed up at the door caroling, or any unexpected guests.
They were fun to make, fun to eat, fun to give and see the reactions. One of my favorite memories.
Angela Miller says

Mister Rogers Neighborhood first aired when I was around 10 years old. My brother, who is 5 yrs younger than me, just loved to watch the show. I also enjoyed it with my children, who watched it during the 1980s. It was a program that never “talked down” to children, and made them feel important.
As a child myself, one of my favorite activities was to go to our local Toledo Zoo and go down into their “Wonder Valley” area for children, where we could roam in the goat enclosure to pet the goats, hold rabbits on our laps, watch the baby elephant, or whatever other baby was there at the time, and pet the huge tortoise. it was an innocent time which is not found in many places any more.

Mrs. Baird’s soft honey white bread with a thin layer of Hellman’s mayo on both pieces of bread and a generous layer of Frito lay bean dip in between the mayo. One of my dear friends grew up as a neighbor of Mr. Rogers. I remember him talking about him fondly, fiercely loyal, saying that Mr. Rogers was genuine and unbelievably kind, and just like he was on television in real life!
Though I remember watching Mr. Rogers, my favorite thing to do once upon a time was to play with a paper doll pop up book, that had four “rooms.” I think it may have been Sleeping Beauty… there was a forest, a throne room, I don’t quite remember the rest, just how the book stood up and transformed into a world. I loved it so much I have been trying to find an image of it online. It fascinated me and was one of the things that turned me to art, origami, and creating things. In colder months I would come downstairs in the morning, sometimes my mom would have fresh homemade bread, and she’d give me a slice of warm bread and I would go to the fireplace and sit in front of the fire and play with my paper dolls and eat fresh bread… snow or cold rain outside, but I was warm, loved, and happy.

Thanks for the chance to win! So many crazy memories of childhood but probably one of my favorites was our ‘playhouse’. It was a boat that my parents found – for free – while they were out and about. We had lots of fun (and a few injuries) playing on that thing and sleeping out in the cabin.
