The last few days Lucy the puggle dog has been hanging out in the strawberry patch for extended periods of time.
By the look of the four giant holes she has made I’m pretty convinced she thinks there are some chewy sticks buried beneath the soil.
The tomatoes and nasturtiums on the back patio are doing well.
And so are all those blue hydrangea plants I bought from the Home Depot {clearance rack} last summer for 75% off.
Baby hubbard squash.
Inspecting the thyme.
The teepee has been replanted with pole beans.
Cukes.
And Zukes.
The whole shabang.
I have a feeling we’ll be having roasted beets as a side dish tonight. 😉
How is your garden growing these days? Will you be planting a fall garden? Have you started your seeds yet?

Hi Mavis! Your garden is beautiful and amazing! Your beets are stunning! I haven’t had much luck with beets this summer and last, not sure why? I am going to try a fall garden this year. I am planting broccoli, cauliflower, peas and kale. I might even plant some extra potato seed that I have for a late harvest. Wish me luck! Kelly in Wasilla:)

Mavis, your garden is beautiful! I realize this may be a very ignorant question but I’m relatively new to gardening. Why do so many people plant Nasturtium’s in the garden? Are they edible OR repel bugs OR nutritional value to the soil??? This inquiring mind is dying of curiosity. Thank you!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes they are edible, repel bugs and look beautiful in the garden. 🙂 Plus, they are crazy easy to grow.
Claudia says
Not only are they edible they are amazingly delicious with a little bite of heat and sweetness at the same time.truley yummy and easy to grow, add them to your salads, decorate your cakes and desserts with them, have as a side next to your scrambled eggs with basil .

Trying to decide what is best for a fall garden (i’m in WA state) and I just got a small greenhouse. Suggestions please!

We are hoping to have a fall garden. That is IF the garden area dries out enough so we can get it tilled up. We do have 6 tomato plants. Got them for free because they looked so bad. They are growing and have green tomatoes on them.
I’ve made 2 small batches (30 oz) each of grape jelly. I made it with low sugar because I don’t like real sweet jellys and jams. Waiting for the figs to ripen, then will make preserves and dehydrate some figs. Not sure what to do with them. I don’t care for fig preserves. Any other ideas on what to do with the. Will be greatly appreciated.

The 2016 Ball book of canning has a fig, rosemary, and red wine jam recipe that I am going to try once the figs are ripe. I got the book from the library.

My garden is doing exceptional again this year! Got an early start with our warmer May.
I have harvested LOTS of kale and lettuce.
Picked all the rutabagas yesterday and froze some mashed and some in chunks for soups/stews this fall. This is the first time I have had luck with them- I love rutabagas!
I noticed some green beans on the plants. Should be picking in a few days. Corn stalks are at least 6 feet tall.
I have 30 tomato plants and lots of flowers and some small tomatoes.
First year that I have cucumbers. Again, lots of flowers and some small cukes.
Massive amounts of nasturtium! I have made pesto and we eat the flowers in salads.
Basil, sage, thyme, chives, oregano and even dill! (yay for dill!)
Peppers in the hoophouse- jalapeno, yellow and red.
Even the rhubarb plant I thought was gone has sprung to life 🙂
I planted sunflowers for the birds and borage for the bees.
I will plant something where I pulled the rutabagas. Not sure what 🙂
Granddaughter planted her own space. She chose onions, carrots, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and eggplant. Everything but the cauliflower is growing. She got a later start.
Susan says
Can you believe I forgot to mention zucchini?? LOTS of zucchini right now! We have been eating it almost daily. I give some to the neighbor and also to my daughter. So far I haven’t let any get to be the size of bats 🙂

I love the Nasturiums. I call them Nasties (just because I don’t pronounce Nasturiums like other people do. I like adding them to salads they’re also great in tacos and burritos. They add a little pep. I’ve only used the leaves. I want to collect the seeds this fall, they can be pickled. They’re called poor mans capers. I’ve bitten into them and they are quite peppery.
I’ve been thinking of sending you pics of my garden, Just so people can see what can be grown in a 25′ by 25′ community garden plot. I’ve been doing great this year. Holding back on the pics as we’ve had some hot spells and I realized the weeds were actually giving the peppers, melons and other veges much needed shade so they wouldn’t burn. So, I’ve got quite a few weeds. Maybe I’ll get the courage up to do it even though there are some weeds. They are helping out a bit after all.
My tomatoes haven’t been doing as well as expected, but I’m still making lots of sauce on a daily, so I can’t complain. Have beans coming out of my ears as I set out to plant blue lake pole beans. I’ve ended up with blue lake bush beans and pole beans that don’t look anything like bluelake…my squash are going gangbusters. I have I think 6 or 7 varieties of summer squash and 2 winter ones. And then my zinnias. I love zinnias and they’re doing great. when you look at my garden spot you see lots of zinnas and it makes everything else ok.
I’m going to have to start thinking about broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower starts soon. My fava beans won’t be till October or so. I love doing onions and garlic also. I planted some late this year so now I have fresh garlic here and there, it’s fun to find and eat! I did a little experiment by throwing last years dried peppers all through the garden. I thought they might grow, they also might deter ants. Well, they’re growing and some of them have flowers, so it’s looking like I just might get a few from them.I’m considering trying potatoes this fall. just to see what happens. I’m growing sweet potatoes this summer. It’s all so much fun!

I am also growing nasturtiums this year and noticed that they attract aphids. My nasturtiums are covered by them! I also have a very big dill plant which is covered by lady bugs. My flowering oregano has about 30 bees buzzing around it every day. Lots of inspect attracting plants in my garden this year!

I’m so glad you included the picture of your hydrangeas. I bought very similar hydrangeas from Lowe’s clearance rack about 6 weeks ago. They are struggling a bit with this dry weather but there is new growth. So I’m hopefully they will look good next year.
Mavis Butterfield says
Have hope. Mine were a little beat up when I bought them last summer too. 🙂
