Two weeks ago I received a phone call:
Mavis? It’s me, the world’s cheapest person.
Oh hey… what’s going on?
Well, I was just calling to make sure you are signed up for the half marathon we agreed to do back in January. You’ve been working out, right?
Ummm…oh sure…you bet…almost everyday (big lie). I was just getting ready to call to make sure YOU WERE SIGNED UP (super big lie).
So I hung up the phone, signed up and this Sunday I will be “doing” a half marathon.
First things first. I have NO INTENTION of running the thing. I plan on doing what I did for the Seattle marathon: fast walking (but not in a hip swinging weirdo way) and jogging about 1 song every mile or so. I did this for the Seattle marathon and it worked for me, better than expected actually.
The one thing that bothered me about training for the Seattle marathon was that I basically walked/jogged for 3 whole months in preparation for the big day. And even though the marathon was 26.2 miles the furthest I ever walked was 18 miles (3 times I think). ANYWAY, my point is/was that 3 months “training” was waaaaay too long for me. I was ready to get the marathon over with by the 2nd month. The 3rd month was kinda torture but I kept at it because I was afraid to slack off (obviously a good idea).
My split time for the marathon was 2hrs., 41 minutes. So, I suppose my goal for this Sunday’s 1/2 marathon is 2 hrs., 4o minutes. Last year my friend did this particular 1/2 marathon and finished in 2hrs, 47 minutes. So I’m hoping with her extra training and my forgetfulness, we can both meet our goals.
And FYI: The reason I’m looking forward to this race with my friend “the worlds cheapest person” is because, quite frankly, she’s not afraid to ditch me. Bottom line: If I can’t keep up she is not going to wait for me. She’ll just see me at the finish line. And that is a good quality to have in a friend. Unless of course she were to ditch me in the middle of someplace like. The Grand Canyon or a rattlesnake pit. Then I’d be ticked.
But a race? C’mon. It’s everyman for himself.
