Holy canoloies what a difference a few weeks makes. Our first garden box was only installed only three weeks ago and look at it already!!
We don’t have any baby tomatoes yet but we do have a bunch of flowers so that is encouraging. I’m hoping for a big harvest this year with our 22 tomato plants.
Potato patch #1 is coming a long nicely. I need to add a bit more compost around the bottom of the plants. We’ve also got a few onions and rosemary plants mixed in there too.
Pole beans growing in an old Coke crate.
Lemon the Lemon tree, cilantro, cabbage and sage are growing on the side patio. It will be interesting to see if we get any lemons this year. There are a bunch of lemon babies but don’t lemons usually ripen in January? Hmmm.
The vegetables in the side yard are looking pretty good as well.
Cabbage… we are going to be harvesting a lot of it here pretty soon. Eeek! I need to find some recipes.
Because this is our first year for strawberries at this house, we probably won’t start harvesting them until around the middle of July. If the plants were already established, we’ve be picking bowlfuls of berries by now. That’s okay though, I can wait.
And last but not least, blueberries. I’m surprised at how many berries are on the 9 berry bushes we planted this spring. Who knows, I may even have enough for a pie. 🙂
How are things coming along in YOUR garden so far this year?
Are you harvesting anything yet?

Your garden looks wonderful. There’s something very primal about wandering around a productive garden; checking for flowers, or fruit or, horror, bugs! Maybe it’s the ‘hunter/gatherer’ coming out? It’s always a lesson in abundance though. And, your garden looks like it will be EXTREMELY abundant.
Sadly, my garden is still a bit of a non-event due to me being seriously over scheduled. No more excuses… Time for action. Who needs sleep anyway?!
Will sauerkraut be on your list of cabbage recipes?
Mavis says
Sleep is overrated! Gardening is a much better way to spend your time. Ha! Also, I’ve never had much success with sauerkraut. Do you have a good recipe?
Hannah says
wow, your garden is so inspiring! I have more green veggies than I know what to do with right now: lettuce, arugula, kale, endive, cabbage. I think I seriously overestimated how much I can get through!
Mavis says
Start lettuce bombing friends and neighbors! Ha!
Diane says
Mavis, I’ve got lots of baby lemons on my Meyer, too (in Portland), plus more blossoms coming on. The lemons USUALLY ripen in January or so, but I had a few that were ready to pick by late fall last year. No worries – Lemon’s doing exactly what she’s supposed to do!
Mavis says
Thanks for the info! Fingers crossed over here!

We have been harvesting lettuce and radishes so far. Your garden boxes are looking great!
Mavis says
Seriously, nothing beats fresh lettuce from the garden! Yum!

How do you prevent the birds from getting the blueberries? I just planted 3 new bushes and I am afraid they will be picked clean.
Mavis says
I’ve never really taken any preventative measures and I haven’t had a big issue. I have friends that hang a CD near them or some shiny foil tape on their bushes and the light reflections keep the birds away. Maybe proactively try that?

Mavis your garden looks amazing!!!!
I was really happy to see Lemon the Meyer Lemon!! Hey my friend…what do you feed it? Mine has nice fat ripe lemons right now. I harvested about 20 and juiced and made ice cubes of them. Then we bag them. So whenever we need lemon juice, we just pull out a lemon cube. Here is my question. Mine is quite pale. It has been since early last year. Epsom salts helped a bit. What kind of food do you give to get yours that dark green???
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Erin!
I have not done anything to Lemon this year yet. She’s looking great right now but I may give her some sort of fertilizer this fall if she needs it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed I get some lemons this year.

Oh my!! Everything looks so nice! Do you put any kind of weed control cloth under your garden boxes to keep the grass from growing up? BTW….. I love your boxes!
Susan says
Mavis,
I just love your blog and your pictures are always so wonderful. What kind of camera do you use?
