Backyard Garden Plot Pictures – Week 24 of 52
It was a busy week in the garden. I was able to work on a really cool art project {I’ll show it to you tomorrow} pick a boatload of peas, plant my zucchini’s for the THIRD time {slugs are evil} and harvest baskets of strawberries. Life is good!
Here is a view from the garden gate. The beans are looking good and I think we’ll be harvesting cabbage in about two weeks.
The weight of the peas was just too much for one of the wooden teepees and it has been trying to fall over for days now. I’m not sure what’s holding it up {maybe the peas?}.
Lemon the lemon tree is doing especially well as are the potatoes planted along side the greenhouse. I’m tempted to pull up a few new potatoes and then replant a few of them for late fall spuds. I’ve never done that before, have you? Will it work?
Talking about potatoes, check out the potato towers. These are rockin’. We even have potatoes coming out of the compost bin behind them.
A view from the back deck.
Along with the sugar snap peas we having growing along the fence and up the tepees, we also planted green arrow peas in their own little patch next to the chicken coop. These are shelling peas and I plan on freezing them to use later in the year.
The raccoon graveyard. Ha! No, it’s the pumpkin patch. We planted pumpkins in the same spot last year and they did great. Once this get’s going, it’s really fun to watch and this is exactly the reason why I love taking weekly photos of the same areas of the garden. To watch them grow.
Last year this whole area was covered with thick green leaves and different shades of orange squash. It was beautiful.
Ye ole’ raspberry patch. Most of the blossoms are gone and all but a few of the bees have moved on. I guess this means raspberries are next.
Here is a view of the raspberry garden from the kitchen window.
And last but not least, the herb container garden. 3 of the 4 pots are overflowing! I guess that means it’s time to get out there and harvest.
Gardening is cool no matter how you do it.
Stay green,
Mavis

Hey Mavis, love your weekly garden photos! We had problems last year with zucchini and squash bugs. Unknown to me when I planted my garden this year I put a mint plant next to the zucchini and have no issues so far. Thanks to reading about companion planting I found out those bugs hate mint!

Yay!

Yes, you can get a second crop of taters cause you can NEVER have to many. Did you plant sun chokes? Has anyone tasted them? I can’t find them to taste/try at the local grocery store.

Love your blog! Friendly tip…don’t plant the same thing in the same spot year after year. Each plant takes different nutrients from the soil and will deplete it, making problems for the following year. Also, any disease on the plants left in the soil will come back with a vengeance next year. Planting in different places, this is called ‘crop rotation.’ Trust me – do this and you won’t have problems!
