Backyard Garden Plot Pictures – Week 34 of 52
Well I finally figured out what kind of squash plant is growing in the half oak barrel next to the fence, Delicata Honeyboat. Have you ever tried it before? So far I have 3 squash growing and let me tell you Bob, I am keeping my fingers crossed.
If you squint real hard you’ll be able to spot lettuce growing in the pallet gardens to the right. My guess is that by the end of September it should be ready to harvest.
The ornamental strawberry corn is a little over 2 feet tall now. I spotted a few little ears of baby corn growing so I’m pretty excited. I know I won’t get a bumper crop or anything but if I can get enough to use for Thanksgiving decorations I’ll be happy.
The biggest challenge right now with the bean tepees, is watering them. The squash vines are taking over and it’s getting hard to find a place to stand and water them. YES, I know I need to jimmy some sort of sprinkler system up there, but right now it’s a bit out of the question.
You know, honey do lists, back to school, cooking cleaning, walking the dog. Someday I’ll find the time.
It’s magical isn’t it? I am seriously loving my greenhouse right now.
Take a look at the HUGE Chinese cabbage there on the right. Wowie zowie if the slugs don’t get it, it will be the largest one I’ve ever grown.
Boo… I still need to weed those potato towers. 🙁 On the plus side, they’re still alive. 😉
A view from the back deck.
It’s looking like a sea of green down at the pumpkin patch but I’m not sure how many we’ll get this year {last year it seemed like there were more} but I’ll be happy with pretty much anything I can get.
And in case you are wondering, the HH did not mow over any pumpkins this week. 😉
Just so you know, I’m waiting for someone to call the garden police on me. I know the raspberry canes are dying, but man does the pathway look like crap or what? I seriously need to make a checklist and get some garden chores done. Pronto.
Luckily the rhubarb is still alive. Yep, I think it might be time for a strawberry rhubarb pie here pretty soon.
Who wants to make one for me?
Pretty please?

Hi Sweetie, I was just admiring your garden paths – until I read your caption. They look great to me. I love your garden pictures. Thank you.

Don’t be so hard on yourself on what needs to be done – you DID have dental surgery last week. Besides, with the break maybe you’ll come back with more energy than ever!
Now me, I’m just trying to figure out how to get our puppy to quit crawling IN our half barrel and digging up the lettuce. So far, I’ve planted it twice and she’s dug it up. If I go for a third and she digs that up, there WILL be consequences. Not sure if they will be for her or the husband 🙂
Cindi Myers says
Sprinkle red pepper in the barrel. This is how I broke my puppy of digging up my plants. After he got a little older, I didn’t have to do it anymore.

Ha!

Seriously do you do all your weeding.? I only ask because it looks so great and I just have garden envy. I better go out and start weeding
Mavis Butterfield says
You have to remember I laid down landscape fabric before I put in my garden beds so it does cut down on the weeding drastically.
Lisa says
Ever make rhubarb pie without the strawberries? Everyone I know, all the restaurant menus, all the recipes I see, are for strawberry/rhubarb pie.
It makes a great pie all by itself! My grandmother would give us loads of rhubarb whenever we visited, and my mother would make pies with it. No strawberries came near them!
They are my brother’s favorite pie, although he insists I can’t make it as good as our mother did.
Weeding? Those look like lovely ferns to me! Which makes me ask, how do you grow such great vegetables when it always looks like the plants are in shade? I have a friend in WA who can’t even grow tomatoes since it’s never sunny enough!
Mavis Butterfield says
The greenhouse area and the potato towers are in the shade, but somehow everything grows. I have no idea how. LOL 😉

Haha! What a surprise I had when I scrolled down the page and saw the pic of Ryan and…ME! I had forgotten about that pic from Mother Earth News Fair. That sure was a fun day.
Mavis Butterfield says
He’s such a Hottie. I love that picture of the two of you.
Cindi Myers says
Mavis,
I think you are doing great! And didn’t you just have major dental surgery? I don’t know how you keep up. Do you still have your neighbor come and help you in the garden?
Mavis Butterfield says
Hulda has been busy with boating and camping lately, but The Girl helps me water sometimes. 😉
