Well, not a whole lot has changed in the past 4 weeks, but I have a feeling from here on out, we will start to see some big changes in my backyard garden.
For starters, how long do you think it’s going to take me to move the enormous rock pile to the left of the picture?
When I first created our backyard garden I put in a large bed of rocks alongside the mini hill to the left of our raised garden beds. At the time I guess I thought it would help add definition to the backyard, but once the garden started to take shape, I found the rocks to be more of a nuisance more than anything else. Not only an I always tripping over them, but the rocks just look so out of place. Since I don’t need the rocks for drainage, I want to re-purpose them as soon as possible.
Now the question is, what will I do when the rocks are gone? More garden boxes? More bark?
Only time will tell.
Week 3 of 52 – Mavis’ Backyard Garden Plot
This week I am hoping to figure out what I’m going to do about those wooden boards along the chicken run, as well as burn a few stumps in the backyard. As soon as Costco gets some landscape fabric in stock. I plan on laying it down where the stumps are now and creating a new garden space. We’ll see how far I get.
What’s happening in your garden? Still have snow?
Are you getting excited about this years growing season yet?
~Mavis
This years garden is being sponsored by the awesome folks at Botanical Interests Seed Company. You can check out their website HERE, order their new 2013 Garden Seed Catalog HERE, or visit my boyfriend Ryan’s blog HERE.

It’s been cold and damp in So Cal until the last few days, so we’re just getting started here. Hubby cut back the Cape Honeysuckle that was encroaching on our Thompson seedless grapes yesterday and I got some seeds sown (under the new grow light you approve, Mavis!).
Today, we went to Home Depot and bought 6 oak half barrels to put on the hot tub platform so I can have more space to garden (in addition to my small raised garden bed). I also bought a couple more seed packets, another seed starting tray, a bunch of 3.5 inch peat pots, and some bare roots (18 asparagus, 30 strawberries, 1 more Thompson seedless grape).
I hope to get out there this week and start whipping it into shape if the business phone cooperates!
Thanks for all your inspiration!

Mavis…I love your yard. I can’t believe how much room you have!! I’ll be watching what you do this year. The rocks are a mystery. I do love how you’ve defined walkways with them.
Mavis says
1.25 acres, but only using about 1/10th of the space for gardening. 🙂

It’s definitely still winter here. Snow covers everything, and the daytime temperatures are still below freezing. I have been planning the garden. This year, I’m thinking I’ll focus more on things that don’t have to be started indoors – last year, I spent a lot of money on seedlings at the nursery. We can plant kale hopefully in early March; peas, potatoes & radishes at the end of March; and everything else around the middle of May. The garlic was planted in October & is just hanging out waiting for warmer temperatures so it can get growing again; it should be ready to harvest in July or August, and it’s the only thing that makes me survive winter – something about knowing that there is food growing even in the COLD dead of winter makes me hopeful that I’ll survive it, too. 🙂

Sigh – wish I had a boyfriend like Ryan …

Wow! I love your yard! My hubby and I live by the beach in Orange County, wonderful weather and gorgeous views but yards are non-existent. 😛 We love it out here but would like to relocate to another state that offers bigger yards for our future pets/kids and hobbies (me: gardening… him: handyman stuff and mischief).
Where in the world do you live where you can get these giant yards??
Mavis says
Washington State. 🙂

I have a ridiculous wannabe gardener question.
Can you tell me what you use landscape fabric for?
Mavis says
To prevent weeds. 🙂

Isn’t there a burn ban? No outdoor burning?
