Mavis’ Favorite Things Giveaway – Day 2

As a way of giving back and thanking you for showing up here on this crazy little blog of mine, whether it’s everyday or every week or just when you need to pop by for a recipe, I thought it would be fun to give away 6 unique gifts this holiday season that have brought us a bit of happiness over the past year.

Some of the giveaways will be locally made products we’ve discovered since moving to New England, some will be handmade, and few will be something I discovered long ago but still find myself using year after year. These 6 giveaways are my way of saying thank you. I love getting up everyday to write this blog! So thank you for being a part of this blog, and for being here to keep the conversation going.

Mavis’ Favorite Things Giveaway – Day 2 – Pie, Glorious Pie!

I think it’s been pretty well documented here on the blog how much I love pie. Especially fruit pies. And so when I came across Kate McDermott’s The Art of Pie a few years ago, I pretty much fell in love with the book after trying a few of her recipes. So it should be no surprise to anyone that one of my giveaways this holiday season involves something to do with pie. 

But not only do I love a good pie, I also love a good quality dishtowel and I’ve been using the Utopia brand of dishtowels for about 6 years now and so I’m including a pack of 12 of those in today’s giveaway as well. 

Also, you can’t really bake a pie without some sort of pie pan and if I’m not using one of my antique tin pie plates, then I’m using one of the many ceramic pie dishes I’ve collected over the years and well, this beautiful blue KOOV ceramic pie dish matched the dishtowels and the pie book and so I’m tossing that into the giveaway too. 🙂

A slice of fresh pie, it’s pretty much the best thing on earth if you ask me. 😉

All you have to do to enter this giveaway is leave a comment below and let me know what your favorite pie is and if it’s homemade, from a bakery or somewhere else.  We all want to know! 🙂

    I bake homemade apple pies with apples from our towns farm. They sell wonderful pies there that are excellent too! I also have to have vanilla ice cream on my pie!

      This is one thing that I know how to do really well. I bake an apple pie with a crumble topping that has been a family and friend favorite for 25 years. The apples must be golden delicious!

    My favorite pie. That’s a difficult one as I like love nearly all kinds of pies. But I guess my absolutes favorites are homemade pumpkin pie (with lots of whipped cream) and homemade lemon pie.

    The pie that comes to mind for me is my mom’s Banana Cream Pie. She made it using regular pie
    crust and Jell-O vanilla pudding. I had never heard of using vanilla wafers until moving south. I like it with vanilla wafers too, but much prefer pie crust.

    Favorite pie is blueberry with a sweet crumble on top……I can make it or buy it……doesn’t matter to me as long as I get to eat it……..extra stars if it has chocolate ice cream on the side!

    Reading through these comments, blueberry lemon sounds like it would be my favorite if I’d gotten a chance to eat it. With this kit maybe I could ATTEMPT baking one. That sounds delicious.

    My favorite pie is my Grandma Adeline”s recipe for Rhubarb Custard. It is the perfect thing and what I would want on my last day on earth. I much prefer pie over cake.

    I make a lot of pumpkin pies. That is my family’s preference. However, my favorite is a cherry pie from my mother-in-law. She makes one every couple of years. Usually Black Raspberry and Peach win out at her house.

    haven’t had it for a long time but oh do I love gooseberry pie!! The gooseberries are so hard to find here in the mid-Atlantic but when in New England we always either get gooseberry pie out or buy gooseberries to bring home or both.

    I like any kind of pie, but Chocolate Fudge Pie is my favorite. The recipe I use came from my Great Aunt Odessa, and I remember eating it at her home in Tennessee when I was small. It’s easy to make and is delicious served warm with a scoop of ice cream.

    My own bumbleberry…….there is usually a week or two when my strawberries , raspberries , blueberries and rhubarb overlap. Its often too early for my gravensteins to be ready so I usually have to buy an apple or 2 at the store to add in. Every year I try and make one or 2 when all is fresh!!!!! Western Washington is the best for berries and rhubarb!!!!

    My family LOVES the buttermilk pie I make. It sounds kind of gross but it is very similar to a sugar cream pie only not as heavy or cloyingly sweet. If I even tried to serve a holiday meal without it, I’d have a revolt on my hands!

    Apple pie for me. I make it the way my dad likes it. I change up the crust from time to time, but the filling is always a mix of apples, a dash of lemon juice, a sprinkling of flour, a tsp or so of cinnamon, and just enough brown sugar.

    Two years ago I decided to grow sugar pumpkins in my garden. Using fresh baked pumpkin instead of canned pumpkin made all the difference in my homemade pie. I would have to say homemade pumpkin pie is my new favorite!

    The pie pan is a match for my favorite casserole dish! How perfect. It would be fantastic for my apple apple. I make it with pie crust for the bottom but crumbles like an apple crisp on the top. The best of both worlds that way.

    My favorite pie to make is blackberry from our wild canes in the woods. Each time I make one, I remember how my children were shorter than the canes when we first started picking them and now they tower above them and, last, year, dug some up and replanted them closer to our house so we could pick them more often. Memories and food are very closely attached to me. Thanks for the giveaway!

      My favorite pie is my homemade apple pie. Light flaky crust, not soggy on the bottom. Usually when I order pie,when eating out (you know, before) the crust is too thick and/or soggy. Nope, not worth the price.

    I always buy the cheap glass pie plates because now that my children are hosting holidays I don’t feel bad when I leave the remainder of pie with them. I have never in my 53 years owned a fancy pie plate! So sad!

    I’ve never heard of those dish towels. I also buy cheap ones because my husband mops up spills on the floors with them and stains them!

    Sour cherry pie! We had a sour cherry tree on the farm I grew up on and my mom made pies for what we could harvest before the birds got them. I still make a sour cherry pie every year, but it is getting harder to find fresh sour cherries, especially now that I live in the southern part of the US.

    My favorite pie is my homemade apple pie. I cook the apples on the stove with cinnamon and butter and the whole house smells yummy. Then, when I go to put the apples in the crust I mix flour and sugar to help with all the liquid. After it bakes there is a nice crunch to the crust because of it!

    I love pie. The best pie I bake is an old recipe from David Letterman’s mom for Blueberry Pie. I think my favorite pie is boysenberry, but it’s difficult to find boysenberries. Marie Callender’s used to have it, but most of those restaurants have closed.

    There’s an amazing cherry pie at a bakery near my with castor sugar on top that is out of this world. And there’s nothing better than a peach hand pie. But as far as pies I make, I love Meta Givens’s pumpkin pie recipe, where you caramelize the pumpkin before adding the custard ingredients.

    My favorite pie is “James’ Cocoa Pecan Pie” from “Miriam B. Loo’s Family Favorites Cookbook” published in 1977. The pie is a cross between a decadent brownie and a lip-licking pecan pie, and is so yummy it has been passed down through generations. I love that both of my sons now make it for their Thanksgiving gatherings and hope that my grandchildren will continue the tasty tradition.

    Hi Mavis! What a great giveaway, thanks!! I personally like Oreo Cream pie, but I make a wonderful apple pie in a bag that has a sugar cookie type top crust! I like crust and juicy bits more than I the cooked fruit, so I like to make it as a slab pie…more crust that way, but it’s beautiful as a traditional round pie for the cooked fruit lovers! I use about ten mixed variety apples and use my fruit slicer to make the slices super thin and the peel stays on! Super easy, super delicious!!

    My favorite way to do pie is to go to our local bakery with my mom. Each of us orders a slice – 1 coconut cream and 1 chocolate cream. Then we split them (half a slice of each) and have an almond joy pie. It’s soooo good!

    When I make them myself, I enjoy making apple pies the best because it makes the whole house feel homey and old fashioned somehow.

    Lemon meringue or peach are my favorites. But apple and pumpkin will never be turned down. I wish I had more time to practice perfecting lemon meringue – it’s a tough one for me.     My favorite homemade pie is Rhubarb, Strawberry, & Blueberries. Up until a couple of of years ago I refused to even try rhubarb. My mother-in-law taught me to make a flakey crust made with just flour, oil and milk. Rolling the dough between a new plastic bag makes clean-up a breeze.

    I was never really a pie fan until this Thanksgiving. My kids each made a pie from scratch, including the crusts, and that made ALL the difference. We finally included shortening and boy was that crust flaky! My 14 year old daughter made a double-crust apple pie which was heavenly- so flaky and the filling was the perfect amount of sweetness. My 12 year old son made a pumpkin pie with a graham cracker crust which turned out almost caramelized on the bottom- so yummy. So I am a new pie convert and the kids are now both obsessed with homemade pie. My husband has always been a pie fan.
    Also I love me a good tea towel- I use so many every day and finding ones that actually dry properly can be tricky.

    The best pie in the world was, for me, my mother’s custard pie, made with vanilla infused set egg custard with a liberal dusting of fresh nutmeg grated on the top. It was always in a square metal tin, with deep rich custard, not too sweet, set so it had just a bit of wobble left in it. It had to be cool from the fridge, with the bottom slightly soggy where the vanillary custard had soaked into the pastry but still with a crisp sides. She died several years ago and try as I might I cannot replicate it so I have to be content to taste it in my memory.

    There’s a local woman here than does incredible tasting pies (IG: heatherspies) that look like art. Pre COVID she would have small pie classes of 4-6 in her home. We make the dough, let it chill while having a light lunch she makes (savory tart made with her delicious pie dough crust) and then we make our baby pies to take home and bake. I’ve been a few times, its so fun! Like playing with grown up play doh.

    Pie just makes one happy…perhaps I should add make a weekly pie to my 2021 goal list. (But then my 2022 goal list would probably include losing the 25 extra pounds I’d gained from checking off the pie goal!)

    Tough question! Here in west part of Canada, my favourite is any of the cream pies from the High 5 Diner . The slices are huge, the filling is perfect . But when I go back to the east coast, it’s the fresh blueberry pie from the Birches diner in New Brunswick. The wild blueberries are locally priced and the pie comes piled high with whipped cream. One year that was dinner, more than once when we were visiting. I make terrible pie crust so don’t make pies.. that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

    This giveaway is the perfect Christmas gift for my mom. Our favorite pie is pear (even better than apple, in my humble opinion). My grandfather planted 2 pear trees on our home place over 50 years ago. The fruit is gnarled & imperfect looking, but has a mellow, cidered flavor when ripe. One of the trees came down in a storm a couple of years ago, but a new sapling is coming up from the trunk! We look forward to remembering & creating new memories (and pie) with this tree.

There was always one at every family gathering growing up, and it was the first pie to be eaten.

Our family has had pie contests that became quite competitive- we had categories, rules, voting procedures, etc. It got pretty competitive and we had some wonderful entries! Except pumpkin….I grew up in Australia and even though I’m lived in Seattle for 20 years, I’ve still never developed a taste for it.

    My favorite is pumpkin, although I never actually use pumpkin. Usually prefer butternut squash, but now use a hybrid called Rumbo. So sweet naturally that I can use a bit less sugar. And no matter how many crust recipes I try, always go back to my MIL’s crust recipe. Always flaky and good.

    My #1 go to is my Aunt Aleene’s pecan pie, using pecans from a grove down the road from her house in AZ. ( I mail order for them because they really do make a diff compared to store bought nuts!) My 2nd fave is embarrassing but it’s actually a store bought, Perkins Sugar Free Wildberry. I don’t know why, it’s a subpar crust and no sugar- but there’s just something about those tart berries!

    Growing up it was well known my mom could not cook BUT……she could bake, and boy oh boy could she make a good pie. My favorite she made growing up and still to this day is strawberry rhubarb. The sourness of the rhubarb matched with sweet little strawberries, both ingredients from the yard. I always use her crust recipe and she handed down her handwritten pie recipes on little 3×5 cards. When rhubarb comes in to season I get giddy knowing I’ll be making this pie soon!

My favorite pie apple is northern spy, but you just can’t get that apple in Georgia though! My 10 year old asks for this pie for his “birthday cake” every year.

    My favourite pie is a Saskatoon Berry Pie made by my nephew’s wife. They own a Saskatoon Berry growing operation (farm) and she is a stellar baker!     Lyman Orchards (in Connecticut) makes my current favorite sweet pie – strawberry rhubarb. Their blueberry and apple are pretty great too.

    Savory – my preference – generally unpopular – is for no gravy. That said, beef and ale pie is amazing!

There’s a family owned turkey farm in the town I grew up in called Assacks Turkey Farm that make the most incredible turkey pies. There was a month long waiting list during November just to get one. I drove down in July to take care of my 96 year old mother and on my return trip to MN i brought back a bushel and 1 peck of the most delicious, sweet peaches. The next day I made peach pies and froze sliced peaches. There is nothing like summer during our MN winters.

    My grandfather was a blueberry farmer in northeastern Canada, Lac-St-Jean. They were the low growing wild blueberries you burned off every couple of years. Most of my summers growing up as a kid in the 60’s and 70’s were spent in the blueberry fields. So, of course, my favorite pie is a good french canadian blueberry pie!

    When I lived in Johnstown PA I was in the Newcomer’s Club, and one of the other members had her grandmother’s recipe for CHESS PIE, a pie with walnuts and raisins, along with a center kind of like pecan pie. My kids request this every major holiday. I gave my girlfriend some because she said it had been years since she ‘d had one. She tasted it and said that’s not like my mother’s chess pie and I like yours better! She sent me that recipe, which had cornmeal and vinegar in it! Not my chess pie! We usually serve mine with Cool Whip or whipped cream.

    Would not have said this last year, but my favorite pie is pumpkin. I joined a CSA this year due to the pandemic and they gave us so many different wonderful pumpkins that I roasted and turned into pumpkin pies. Literally have made 5 pumpkin pies this fall and no regrets. I had no idea how much better roasted pumpkin can be than canned pumpkin.

    Oh my! I love me some pie! My favorite fruit pie is PEACH, made up like a fresh strawberry pie with no top crust!! But then again, maybe it is fresh strawberry!! Homemade with my Mother’s “oil crust”, which she had to learn to make many years ago after my Daddy had his first heart attack and she had to change her “farmers wife type of cooking and baking”! No more lard in her pie dough! She was still the best pie maker and baker I have ever met!! She passed away in September 2019 at age 98! My Daddy’s nephrologist said that the change my Mother made in her cooking and baking when Daddy suffered kidney failure and dialysis as a result of that early heart damage, kep him alive for at least 10 more years than was expected!!

    I made a homemade peach pie for the first time this summer and it was HEAVENLY!! I used fresh New Jersey peaches and actually didn’t make enough crust to cover the top of the pie, but the “open-faced” version was still incredible and the filling-to-crust ratio was surprisingly great. 🙂

    My favorite pie is my mock butternut squash pie. I use zucchino rampicante/tromboncino squash that i grow in my garden. I leave some on the vine and they harden like a winter squash. When planted on cattle panel trellises, I’ve had them grow 7 ft long and they keep all winter!

    Do we have to limit it to just one? Definitely homemade for me. I really enjoy the simplicity of a good buttermilk pie. But you can’t go wrong with an apple pie. When I was growing up my Mother always made two pies at a time – a lemon pie and a “rotten lemon pie” (chocolate) – I liked the lemon the best but the chocolate was always the favorite of everyone else. After all the kids were grown she would just make multiple “rotten lemon pies” since they disappeared so fast and it is my Daddy’s favorite – and you can’t really beat a chocolate pie that is still warm from the oven. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

    My favorite is cherry pie. I have such good memories of my sweet aunt always bringing me a home made cherry pie just for me because she knew how much I liked it and nobody else really did, which is why the pie was basically mine, all mine!

    Can’t pick just one because there are three pies that I would struggle to choose from. All homemade. The first is a cranberry-raspberry pie that is somewhat an original creation by my mom- it’s been a Thanksgiving staple in our family for decades. Second is a simple toll house pie (chocolate chip cookie in pie form- even more delicious than cookies). And finally, cinnamon pie. This one might just edge out the others a little bit for first place.

    My very favorite is a black bottom banana cream pie I make from scratch except for the crust 🙂 Thin layer of ganache and then bananas topped with vanilla custard and fresh whipped cream. Once a year for a friend’s birthday. She likes the leftovers for breakfast 🙂

    My fav homemade pie is Rhubarb & Strawberry. I so miss my garden of rhubarb in the midwest. Delicious! My fav store pie is key lime. I live in the south now. Need me some pie asap!:)

    Growing up we lived on what had been a walnut orchard. So mom made walnut pies (pecan pie recipe but made with walnuts). How I loved those pies.

    My favourite pie was homemade turkey pie made right after the festive big meal, to get rid of those leftovers – they never had it so good. It was made by my mother but she’s no longer around so it is but a memory.

    Both of my grandmothers were excellent pie bakers. My paternal grandmother held the title of “Best Pie Baker” in her Iowa county. So I still make my own pies. Cherry is my absolute favorite!

    I really enjoyed my great-grandmother’s Concord grape pies. I have her recipe and can’t quite get it to work. Mine are good but not the same as what I remember.

    Always homemade. I am partial to homemade pumpkin pie made from homegrown pumpkin puree, using the recipe from Mark Bittman in How To Cook Everything.
    During other times of the year, I like blueberry cream cheese pie.

    Lemon Meringue pie is the best! It was exciting when our youngest son decided he wanted to learn to do some baking and chose to make a Lemon Meringue as his first project!

    Wow what’s not to love about pie! My mom made the best tart cherry pie from the old red Betty Crocker recipe but added a twist using a sweet dough crust. Sadly I am unable to get the sweet dough crust right it splits and is either too soft or not malleable. If you have any suggestions please pass them on.

    We have a big country farm market called Bishops Orchards not far from where I live in CT. Being a diabetic and thinking I was going to have to forego all desserts this past Thanksgiving, my sister set out to search for a sugar-free apple pie, and she found one at Bishops. Honestly it was the most delicious apple pie I’ve ever tasted. If I hadn’t know it was sugar-free, I never would have been able to tell! It’s my new favorite pie. Or at least it will be until we try the sugar-free peach pie for Christmas!

    Dutch Apple Pie is my favorite, usually we get a frozen one to bake in the oven. I’ve made pastry for a long time but have never actually made a pie. I really want to sometime, I just feel a bit intimidated on making the filling.

    Growing up in northeast Kansas, gooseberry pie was huge! Our neighbor made them by the dozens and sold them off her back porch. haha. Best pie ever, but sadly I don’t live in gooseberry country anymore and haven’t had one in years. I’ve had lots of pie since then but nothing measures up to gooseberry.

    Homemade graham cracker cream pie is my absolute favorite! Several of my friends make this pie, but I have yet to perfect the recipe. Homemade dream pie using dream whip and pudding is a really close second…it’s so quick and easy!
