Have you planted your peas yet? I planted my first round of peas in early February in gutters and then placed them in the greenhouse. Yes, it was a wee bit early to be planting peas and we did get a hard frost the day after I planted them, but luckily, they are starting to pop up through the soil. π
Round two of my sugar snap peas were planted last week in one of my garden boxes… and round three? Well I’ll be planting those this weekend. If you have never grown peas before, give it a try this year because they are hands down a million times better than anything you’ll ever try from the frozen food section. Fresh peas = Love.
Holy cow, we are practically swimming in mesclun lettuce these days.
We have three containers full of lettuce and are harvesting every other day right now for side salads.Β
Think how much money brides could save if they walked down the aisle with bouquets of gourmet lettuce greens instead of roses. π True, walking down the aisle with a head of iceberg lettuce would be a little weird, but if they chose the right variety of lettuce, it might just work.Β
Arugula Rocket LettuceΒ for instance has a beautiful leafy pattern to it, but if the bridal party were to get a little hungry and decided to nibble on their bouquets, they’d be in store of a huge surprise.
Have you tried it before? Wowza! It.Is.Spicy. Almost so spicy on it’s own it makes you gag. π
Happy planting everyone, I’m off to start some more seeds,
~Mavis

I keep trying to get peas planted but it’s too wet, just keeps raining. I know peas are the easiest things to grow but I never have luck with them, I’m not sure why. I’m also starting my lettuce inside and moving them out as soon as I can. Your lettuce looks wonderful!

I’ve used arugula and spinach mustard for pesto. Holy moly was it ever good! Must like bold flavor to enjoy it and did I ever, with Ohio City tomato basil pasta. Tis a match made in heaven, at least for me!

Mavis — love your website — thanx so much for sharing your gardening adventures! A question for you re: the large galvanized water troughs you are growing lettuce in, in your greenhouse — where to find best price on a trough? what size are you using? did you have them delivered? did you drill holes for drainage? Any other tips/tricks re: these troughs? This inquiring mind wants/needs to know! Many thanx!

I purchased my water tanks {troughs} at Wilco Farm and Garden store but I’m sure and farm store would carry them. The ones I have are 2×4 feet and yes, I plaed milk jugs at the bottom of them before filling with garden soil. No holes. π

Arrugula is my favorite! It’s a great addition to sandwiches, and makes a killer steak salad.

I love your posts, they keep me grinning! I’ve just put in a raspberry bed, rosemary plants, and have about 250 seedlings under the grow lights in my laundry room. Soon (this weekend I hope) I will plant peas, lettuce, chard and other tasty bits that can handle the cold in my 2 low tunnels & 2 cold frames. π I LOVE your greenhouse, by the way, keep the great posts coming!

I bet you could totally find a niche market for bouquets of lettuce. I’d like mine with some radish roses, too. Could be a trend for the savvy organic connoisseur.
Mavis Butterfield says
I think it totally could! π

Mavis, you are too funny! I am totally inspired by your gourmet lettuce bouquets in a serious way! I’m so considering it for my beach wedding in September….and hey, lettuce is cheaper than flowers, right? I don’t think my bridesmaids would mind being able to make a salad with their bouquets after the wedding. π Thanks for the awesome post and inspiration! Love your blog!
