I was out in the greenhouse picking tomatoes for some homemade sauce last night when I noticed a few of my tomato plants are on their way out. 🙁 The leaves are starting to curl and turn brown as if to say “I’m done, please let me die.”
The tomato plants in the stock tanks are still hanging in there, but the tomatoes I had growing in pots, well those needed to go.
So I guess you know what that means… It’s time to get the cool weather crops planted! Which is pretty stinkin’ awesome if you ask me because I’ve been missing my dinner salads. My goal is to get my greenhouse gutters planted with some leafy greens, maybe some baby bok choy too.
Ahh, to everything there is a season. Right?
How’s it going at your place? Are your tomato plants still hanging in there, or are they done for the season?

Do the dying plants go into the compost pile?
Mavis Butterfield says
They should be burned, not composted. 🙂
Barbara Harvey says
Can you give a little more info on why they should be burned? Just curious.
Mavis Butterfield says
By the end of the season my tomato plants always end up with funky leaves, mold or some sort of disease so instead of tossing them on the compost heap I typically burn them so if there was any sort of disease it doesn’t spread to next seasons crop. I hope that helps answer your question.
Barbara Harvey says
Yes it does. Thanks for the info, makes perfect sense to me. 🙂

My tomatoes are going gangbuster right now! I have a bucketful sitting on the counter. Need to make salsa. Still lots more to come.
Green and wax beans, too. Canned 18 pints of Dilly Beans and have been eating fresh beans daily! (The neighbors have their fill, too!)
Corn is ready! Really delicious! Zucchini and yellow squash are slowing down. Didn’t get many pattypans.
The deer mowed down the nasturtiums last night. They had a feast out there!!!
Pumpkins are orange !! I noticed they seem to be early for everyone. There is a patch down the street and theirs are ready, too.
DH planted a new row of lettuce yesterday.
I’m happy with this year’s garden.

Here in north eastern Minnesota my tomatoes are just starting to ripen…I brought the first handful in last week. Spring was really late again this year, so everything is ripening late.
I hope our first frost holds off for a bit, but the extended forecast says low temps possibly in the 30’s next week. Yikes!
