Rain is in the forecast again for today so last night I went out and harvested a few fruits and vegetables so I could take the day off from gardening and work on getting ready for our trip to Memphis.
If you’ve never had real, homegrown strawberries before, you need to put them on your wish list for next year. The last few years I’ve ordered the tri-star variety from Raintree Nursery and absolutely love them.
We have about 2 rows of potatoes that are ready to be dug up so last night I pulled up two potato plants and this is what I found below the surface. Someone get the butter, quick!
More beets!
The heirloom tomatoes are just starting to trickle in. We’ve been picking them every two or three days and Lucy the puggle dog is out there at least twice a day stealing the little cherry tomatoes as well.
Last nights harvest:
1 pint raspberries
1 quart strawberries
2 quarts green beans {Roma and Kentucky bush}
2 quarts tomatoes
2+ pounds potatoes
3+ pound heirloom beets
Not to shabby if you ask me. 🙂

My garden is slow coming in.Have green beans,squash,zuchinni,boy choy,green tomatoes,a few ripe cherry tomatoes and large ones,green peppers..

I have been harvesting lots and lots of green and yellow beans. Eating fresh, freezing and canning Dilly Beans. Picked 2 zucchini for dinner last night – and a couple pattypans the night before.
Lettuce is still coming on strong- and a few tomatoes trickling in. I will be harvesting corn in the next couple weeks.

Looks good Mavis.. Some great looking veggies and fruit. I have been trying out a bit of container gardening with no luck.. the plants grow but yielding nothing..oddly its noting on all three veggies I tried…weird.. I think my thumb is protesting that it is NOT green

I only have a few containers on my patio so only harvesting tomatoes right now. I had peas (used your trellis cage idea from last year, worked AWESOME btw!!) and am waiting for my poll beans to come on. I was late getting my beans in this year. I’ll have green peppers soon as well. You truly are an inspiration!

Tuesday: 5 lemon cucumbers, 5 sweet peppers, 3 snow peas, 5 cucumbers, 5 zucchini, 1 yellow squash, 4 jalapenos, 1 wax bean, 5 okra, 1 accidental pick of a pumpkin
Yesterday: 7 yellow squash, 6 zucchini, 3 lemon cucumbers, 1 acorn squash (another casualty of weeding/clearing squash bug infested plants), 1 cantaloupe, 15 cucumbers, 11 banana peppers, 4 snow peas, 15 jalapenos
So…mostly squash, cucumbers and jalapenos. Not one tomato 🙁

I planted my garden in So Cal in February and have harvested all of the tomatoes and cherry tomatoes from the first planting. The second planting is getting close, and the third planting has flowers now. The first planting of cucumbers has been yanked, the second planting is producing like crazy now, and the third has flowers. I’m still getting some green beans from the first planting, getting lots now from the second, and the third is flowering. The beets didn’t do well — small. The first planting of zucchini produced a ton and have been yanked, the second is producing now, and the third is flowering. Getting green and yellow bell peppers now and watching for some red that are just starting to turn. Jalapenos have been coming for a while, too. Carrots continue as well. Cantaloupe are getting close and eggplant are just showing fruit!

About 4 lemon cucumbers a day (just enough to eat!)
Eggplants – but I give them to a neighbor. I love the beautiful plants, and their flowers and blooms, but don’t like to eat it!

I like them, if I don’t let them get too big. I was expecting a popping yellow color, but that was too big. I now pick them when they just have all the green turned to a shade of light yellow, and that is perfect. Seems less dense/more watery than regular cucumbers.

Lemon cucumbers are the only kind I grow! I pick them when they get round, more than depending on the color. They are usually no more than 2″, and sometimes smaller.
I don’t think they are watery or less dense at all. They are best cooled. They don’t seem to keep well, but if they get a bit soft, peel them, slice them up and put them in ice water for a few minutes and they perk right up.
I have 6 plants in a raised bed, and 2 in a Topsy Turvy (first time trying!). The Topsy Turvy ones are not doing as well. They don’t seem to like the weight of the cucumbers hanging off them. The others are trellised.

Do you eat the tops of the beets along with the roots? We like to give the tops a rough chop and sautee them in a little butter. Then we peel and slice the beets and add them to the pan. When everything is tender we sprinkle on some vinegar and dig in! I love your blog and keep up with you every day. We have two backyard raised beds, but it has been SO WET here in southwest Georgia that our plants just gave up the ghost! Its time to replant for fall, so I’m hoping for a bit drier weather and a good harvest.

I give the beet tops to the chickens, they love the fresh greens. 🙂

All I have harvested is a few cucumbers…but I bet if you ask the chipmunks what they have harvested from my garden, they would have a really long list for you!
