In between rain showers yesterday I worked in the garden pulling up dying tomato plants and re-planting the strawberries from the greenhouse.
Lucy Puggle was elbow deep in her own project of course.
I pulled the strawberry filled gutters out of the greenhouse last week and finally got around to re-planting them yesterday in the wood pallet garden.
For some strange reason, strawberry plants grow really in wood pallets.
So far it’s shaping up to be a pretty wet fall around here. Originally I was thinking about planting the pallets with lettuce seeds, but with all the rain we’ve been having, I think planting lettuce seeds would be like planting candy for the slugs. So why bother.
Now, if I could just get the rest of my bean pods to turn yellow so I could pull them up and let them dry out in the garage I’d be happy.
Here’s what the pallet garden looks like right now. 5 pallets with strawberries, 1 with beans.

I cannot seem to get any strawberries to grow. the plants look healthy but no berries…maybe one or two tiny ones.

I’m having the same issue with my beans…and they seem to keep flowering, too, so I guess they are going to keep going for a little bit. I also have some late-breaking mini bell peppers happening. Not sure what that’s about, but it’s making it hard for me to figure out when I can pull things and replant with winter wheat.

Will you leave the strawberries in the pallets all winter?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. They plants die back and come back in the spring.

I have the same question as felicia – do you leave the strawberries out? I planted some this year but I wasn’t sure what to do with them once it starts getting cold. Do they need to be covered for winter? I live in KY.

Hi – Just found your website and “WOW” – “AMAZING” ! ! !
My question is about the ground around your pallet garden. Could you please explain how you have such an area that is not covered in grass and weeds – it does not seem to matter what we try we end up with both, grass and weeds taking over even in our raised beds, etc . . .
Did you remove all of the grass and topsoil in your garden area or did you just mulch over the grass?
Did / do you use something to kill or keep the grass and weeds down in the mulched areas?
Also, what kind of soil are you using in your pallet gardens? We currently are using “Mel’s Mix” from Square Foot Gardening.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your website, photos and knowledge with the rest of us out here!

Hi Deb, we have landscape fabric below the garden beds and pallets beneath the bark. The garden beds and pallets are filled with a mix of potting soil and garden soil.
