I went out to the garden this afternoon to find some fruit for a fruit salad tonight, and was surprised to find so much out there. Here it is almost October, and there’s still plenty of good stuff growing in the backyard. Pretty stinkin’ awesome if you ask me.
A few years ago we planted 4 different varieties of blueberries {3 each of the following varieties: Bluegold, Patriot, Bluecrop, and Sunshine} from Rain Tree Nursery.
In years past, the chickens have got to them before we have, but this year the hens have a new home and we got the blueberries instead. Yee-Haw!
And I’m seriously beginning to wonder how much longer these Tri-Star strawberries are going to last. Does anyone know how late in the year they will produce? Last night in got down to 49 degrees. Yikes!
Are you still picking fruit in your neck of the woods, or is the growing season officially over?

I went out and picked a bowl full of raspberries. I thought I was the only one who had raspberries that like to ripen in September! While ever one else has picked already I’ve been waiting patiently for mine to come in. Finally!!!

The blueberries here in Portland are done, but I’m still getting handfuls of strawberries (Quinault and Seascape). A friend’s daughter gave me a mountain-sized bag of Italian Plums a few days ago from a tree in her yard, from which I made jam, a great plum galette, and another batch of jam filled out with some store-bought nectarines. Now I have to go find some pears for your Pear-Vanilla Jam recipe!

Mavis,
I have everbearing strawberries also. We live in North Central Illinois and mine go into October. I get the best strawberries in September and early October. I have Heritage Raspberries and am still picking my fall crop. It’s great to have fruit in the fall!

Mavis, can you please tell me what materials you used to make the 8’x4′ raised garden beds, what type of wood did you use?
Also I live in Miami and I would like to start growing my own fruit and vegetables, do you think the heat here will have an effect on growing these items?
Mavis says
I believe we used cedar posts from The Home Depot. We also placed landscaped fabric down in our backyard {underneath the mulch} before we put the garden in for weed control. I’m not sure what you can grow in Florida in the fall/winter/ How hot does it get down there? I wonder if you guys can grow tomatoes and cucumbers down there this time of year?
