Yesterday around 9 am a white delivery truck appeared in my driveway. Wahooo! My 8×14 glass greenhouse finally arrived! I have wanted a greenhouse for years and when the Handsome Husband brought home a brochure a 2 weeks ago we finally decided to take the plunge and order one. The Handsome Husband wanted to put the greenhouse together himself. Ha Ha Ha. I told him I needed the greenhouse installed right away AND properly so I paid the additional fee to have the experts install it.
I think the HH was relived more than offended. The greenhouse guys arrived at 9am with part of the structure already built and left around 2 pm. Since they have built over 1,500 of them together I think it was a wise decision to let the experts handle the installation rather than a rookie.
I told the guys about my plans to grow 2,000lbs of garden veggies in the backyard this summer. They thought I was crazy. Then they went on to tell me I could probably grow 2,000 lbs of produce over a 12 month period in the greenhouse. I think THEY are crazy.
So I went inside and baked cookies.

Yay Mavis!! That is too exciting!! I can’t wait to see what you can accomplish with this dream come true. I gotta say…that is one awesome Valentine… 🙂 Instead of flowers, my hubby got me an orange tree!! I love it!
Mavis says
An orange tree? Hot diggety!
Heather says
Yahoo! How cool are you! I love that it’s glass and what a lovely addition to your yard. I’d say, that’s a lovely Valetine for sure! I can’t wait to see what you do with that magical house. 🙂

Oh my word!!! Congratulations! I am so excited for you and am looking forward to all your posts about it!!!

I knew a guy who once put black barrels of water in his greenhouse to help keep it warm. The barrels would soak up heat in the day and the water would release it at night. I’d say before you plant anything get a thermometer out there to see the temp. Wahoo!! So excited for you. Are you going to grow in pots or straight in the ground or both?
Mavis says
I like the idea of the black barrels. I’ll have to look into that thanks!

I’ve heard of people painting rocks black which does the same thing. They heat up during the day and radiate the heat back at night. I think that it also would work the other way in the summer, help to cool things down. (at least that is how the thick stone walls of my aunt’s house work, they keep things warm in winter and cool in summer) Congratulations on your greenhouse. (I’ve just found your blog, so everything is new to me) I love your blog, by the way!

So excited for you and like the others can’t wait to see how you put this to good use. Congratulations smart move having the installation done by the experts . Robin
Mavis says
Hahaha. Yes, having the pros install it was wise. 😉

I am not sure how cold it gets there, but I have been growing lettuce in my greenhouse all winter. My lowest low temps have been 20 degrees at night. I have an unheated greenhouse, and the lettuce is growing faster than we can eat it.
I know you will love having a greenhouse. I am on my third one only because I keep needing more room. This time my dear husband built a giant one and declared that this was as big as it was going to get.
Mavis says
Planting lettuce is on my to do list today. 3 grenhouses? Wowza!
Mike says
A perfect addition to your food growing operation…congrats!
Mavis says
Thanks Mr. H. I’m sure I’ll be asking you questions soon. 🙂

My mom and her ex-husband decided to take on putting up a green house for my grandparents, and I’m pretty sure it’s part of the reason they’re divorced now. So good call!

I’ve been looking at greenhouses for next year and I love how versatile yours is. Its glass, double doors, with the hooks for hanging. Would you mind sharing what kind you bought? Love your site
Mavis says
Hi Cindy, I purchased a Magnum greenhouse. It is 8′ x 14′, all glass and I love it.
Nancy says
Did your greenhouse count towards your total cost of $100 per month?
Tanya Peila says
We bought a house in 2009 with a fiberglass greenhouse in the backyard. I have never used it! After finding your site I’m ready! Lol but I need to know what you have in your “starts” and what you are transplanting.
Emily Cross says
Love this greenhouse! Where did you buy it? What brand is it?
Thanks!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Emily,
Are you still making bags? I would love to get another red first aid bag {or two} from you if you are. 🙂 I bought the greenhouse from the Glass Gardner in Tacoma but I think he’s out of business now. The greenhouse is a Magnum glass greenhouse in British Racing Green though if that helps. You should be able to find it online.
Emily Cross says
Thank you for the info!! (Not sure why it took so long for me to see your response.)
I would love to make you another first-aid bag! Unfortunately, it might be a year or so down the road before I can follow through on that request because we are in the process of building a new house and my sewing machine is packed away in storage. I can’t believe that you remembered that I made that first-aid bag, it seems like a lifetime ago — I am so flattered (you totally made my day!) Thank you! (You can follow our home building process on Instagram @northharborbagco)
Cheers!
