This morning I went to the feed store. My original plan was to walk in, buy a 50lb bag of Organic Pride Feed and go home. But in order to get to the feed display I had to walk by the seed rack first.
Crap. I seriously need to invest in a pair of blinders. What is it about the seed rack? Why do I feel the need to stop and look. Do I really think I am going to find a packet of seeds I don’t already have?
Well apparently so. I had actually been on the hunt for a packet or two of Patty Pan squash. But what I didn’t know I needed {until I found it of course} was Watermelon Radish, Peanut Pumpkin and Blackeyed Peas. I have grown watermelon radishes in the past but never peanut pumpkins or black eyed peas. I figure if I don’t like the black eyed peas I can always give them to the Hillbillys. I know for a fact they love them.
Another splurge, was a Flock Block for Black Fatty and crew. Do you have chickens? Have you ever bought one? Let me tell you, the Flock Block was not cheap. $11.99 to be exact. It sure does smell good though. The Flock Block is filled with chicken yummies like cracked corn, whole wheat, barley, oyster shell, sunflower seeds and are you ready for this… Cane Molasses.
Now the only question is, how long will it last?

Mavis,
The flock block will last a while, just don’t leave it out in the rain, it will melt! I speak from experience!!

Thanks Jen. I was worried the girls might try and eat it all in one day. 🙂

Oh wow….I need a Flock Block for my girls…they’re kinda bored lately. Thanks to Jen for mentioning that it will melt…I’ll be sure and put it under shelter.
Oh…and I’m pretty sure you can get some blinders AT the feed store…;)

I agree Figgy. You need a Flock Block. All the cool
catsbirds have one.The Prudent Homemaker says

HAHA–I can SO relate. And yet I find something, almost every time. Yep–it’s dangerous!

That peanut pumpkin looks interesting. I’ve grown black eyed peas. They produced well. We snap them in half or thirds and cook with your choice of pork (bacon, pork hock, ham, etc). I’ll be interested in how the radish and pumpkin produce for you, looks like fun. Oh and I agree I actually can hear seed packets calling my name when I try to avoid that section of any store I enter.

I was thinking I would dry the black eyed peas. Geez Robin, Now I’ll have to go get another packet so I can grow some to eat fresh as well. Way to go lady… way to go! lol

Reading back on your chicken posts (since your blog is what inspired me to get chicks this year!) – and wondering how long the flock block lasted you guys before I go out and get one!

Although we had to bring it inside twice due to rain, the hens gobbled it up in about 10 days. 🙂
