Technically, there was nothing wrong with our powder room when we bought the house.
Yes, the toilet sat incredibly low and you practically bumped into the vanity as you walked in the room. The chunky 1980’s white ceramic toilet paper and towel holders worked just fine and the worst light fixture on the planet, well that worked too. But, since we were replacing the wood floors throughout the house {which included the powder room} we decided to go ahead and have the room remodeled more to our liking while the workers were already there. And truthfully, it was a relatively easy and inexpensive project to tackle.
We started by ripping up the floors and then removing the low toilet. Since we felt the new vanity the previous owners installed was just to wide for the space, we went ahead and had the plummer move the pipes over about 2 feet towards the toilet area. This gave the room a more open feel to it. As luck would have it, Mario, the tile guy was looking for a new vanity and a toilet {his wife is not as tall as we are} so we did a little bartering with him. The vanity, and two toilets {we also gave him The Girl’s old toilet} in exchange for him laying the tile in her bathroom for us {we bought the tile}. It was a great deal for us {and him to I think}.
I repainted over the elephant grey walls with a neutral tan color and had Chino throw up some crown molding and white trim on the floor.
It’s amazing what a higher toilet, pedestal sink, and darker floors can do for a room, don’t you think?
The biggest challenge for me was getting all the trim painted and trying to find a picture to hang on the wall. I didn’t want to have to buy anything else so I ended up using an old picture of the Eiffel Tower we had in our bathroom at our old house. The wood frame was a little to light for my liking so I put 3 coats of stain {leftover from the fireplace mantel} on it and hoped it would look okay.
Plain and simple. Just the way I like it.
Not a huge change, but I think it updated the room quite a bit. Now all that’s left to do is find a mirror for over the sink and we’re done!
What do you think?

I went several years without a mirror in our powder room and then found exactly what I was looking for at IKEA. Good luck!

It looks great! What color is that on the walls?

Lovely transformation! I love pedestal sinks in small bathrooms and hate low toilets!

That’s really funny that your redo is almost exactly the opposite of ours.
We removed a pedestal sink and replaced it with a cabinet sink that looks a lot like the one you took out (black on the bottom).
However we also removed a black porcelain toilet and replaced it with a white one.
Pedestal sinks are fine, but it didn’t work too great for us because we only have one bathroom. One bathroom, one sink, no place to put things down when you brush/ floss/ etc. (Luckily I don’t wear makeup). No place to store TP, etc.

Ahhh but there is a place to store 3 extra rolls of t.p. in a pedestal sink…. In the back, where the pipes meet the pedestal. ๐ That’s where we hide ours.

I love it, but I am biased we have the same toilet and sink in our upstairs half bath along with dark cherry floors too. I got a great mirror with a molding ledge from pottery barn for over the sink and it goes perfectly, not sure if they still make it or not. Well done!

I love this too!! I love the lines of the matching pedestal sink and toilet–but now that you removed the sink with cabinet where do you store your cleaning supplies? You must have to bring them in with you every time you clean the bathroom. Cleanser, sponge, toilet cleaner, windex, paper towels (for the mirror you don’t have yet)-etc…. It’s hard to know what to do to make life easier…lol!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
I store all my cleaning supplies in the laundry room. ๐ I’ve actually never thought to store them in the bathroom. Ha!

Love the bathroom redo. Picture looks great with new frame color ties everything together.
I like that it came from your previous house too. Once you find a treasure it’s worth keeping.

Looks good! My rather-recently updated bathroom is nearly identical to your “old” bathroom! Now I feel behind the times. :/ Gray walls, same style toilet and washbasin/cabinet, too!

What is your paint color?
